    I am 6’8”, 295lbs....my back was dying with small tripods. I purchased a Gitzo Series 5 Giant ). At full height... 109” ( about 2.75m) it is taller than me. The beast of tripods! Game changer for me. Enjoy the new toy!

    • @TheCoomer

      The Giant looks fantastic, thankfully I'm 6ft2 so I can get away with standard tripods but with a leveling base to give an extra 60cm. But was looking at the giant series

    Tommy certainly looked a beast. In terms of the ballhead, a small adaptor can be bought for geared tripod heads that would raise the base of your ballhead up slightly and allow for easy access

    • @BrendanvanSon

      Yup, I need to order one. Maybe 3LT already has one too that I don't know about.

    a solution to the ball head pan knob issue is to put a female square into it, and use a "whip" to operate it!- like focus pullers in cinema do, Linhof M679 also has it, for this reason, but when using their "rotor slide" back as it reduces access to the knobs. The large base is also good for Lf field cameras, as it provides support under the bed.

  • @JohnDrummondPhoto
    @JohnDrummondPhoto 3 года назад +1

    That orange thing is a bowl plate for tripod heads with bowl bases. That's mainly massive heads such as the gear heads that Thomas Heaton and Adam Gibbs use. They allow movement and tilting of the whole head, not just the top plate, to ensure the head is level no matter how the tripod itself might be angled. That's a lot of tripod!
    I use an FLM tripod (Canadian!) that extends up to 68" and flattens to 3.5". With the ball head installed, my camera's maximum height is well over my head and I'm 5' 11". So at 3.1 pounds, it's taller, lighter, and less expensive than the 3LT. Your tripod base is way too wide for the head you're using, that's why you're struggling with it. As you noted, that tripod is built for video or other massive heads.
    Get at least a regular ball head instead of the travel head you have now. 3LT doesn't make one but Really Right Stuff has great ones. Check the BH-40 or BH-55, which are great panning ball heads and more stable for long lenses like that 100-400.

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  3 года назад +1

      Yeah, which is why I'm saying that 3 Legged thing needs to sell a ball head for it. It's like they're missing a product, haha.
      I'm sure they'll have something soon. But, I will be looking into getting another ball head for this... if I ever get out in the field again.

    • @JohnDrummondPhoto
      @JohnDrummondPhoto 3 года назад

      @@BrendanvanSon if you didn't see the edit to my first comment, I recommend the RRS BH-40 or BH-55. I don't know if you're a 3LT ambassador or anything but I wouldn't wait for them if you're going to use that tripod regularly.

    My main tripod is a Gitzo G1325 which I've probably had for 20 years. It's still in great shape and I don't plan to replace it any time soon. I also have a Gitzo G1548 which I bought to use with a Wimberley gimbal and Canon 600mm lens. The gimbal and 600mm lens are long gone, but I kept the tripod. I also have a Benro Mach 3 tripod which I use for travel. I suspect the Benro will need to be replaced long before the Gitzos.

    I have a quick question for you. I have a Sony R2 and I got the Canon 100-400 II lens with an adapter for it. I find that focusing with low light is impossible but with good light it works ok. How is that lens with your Canon with the EF to R adapter? I really like this lens and the Sony version is just way too expensive. I've considered in the past the possibility for me to switch to Canon (I used a Canon 10D when it came out ages ago) as there is a lot of good EF glass at great prices out there. Cheers

    • @BrendanvanSon
      @BrendanvanSon  3 года назад +1

      I don't really have a comparison since I've never used it with a Sony. But, I don't really struggle with focus at all. That said, any time a lens is f/4-5.6 it's going to focus slower in low light. Can you rent or borrow a Canon RP or R to test it?

    Eh sixteen minutes of no captions ... no man, I don't do that. I'm playin' hardball now, I keep a tally of my channels that continue to not caption and I guess just unfollow and find someone else after a while. Because hey I'm learning nothing. THE PLANET DOESN'T BELONG TO THE AUDISTS! DOUBLE SHAME ON RUclips (not necessarily the artists). I gotta take a stand, and not be walked all over anymore. It is suggested that if creators don't want to add captions, SAY SO, and those that do put pressure on RUclips to make facilities available by default! Creator hint: DaVinci Resolve has captioning facilities built in.

      Hey buddy, I find it strange you're not getting CC. I have been double checking just for you when I publish that they come through. For me, on my end and via an incognito check, they are there.
      Not sure how to fix it on your end. I have emailed RUclips support to ask if there's a reason they wouldn't be showing up for certain viewers.

      @@BrendanvanSon They're showing NOW (7 PM) on both devices - laptop & smartphone. Thanks! Just RUclips oddness. I've been noticing these things across all the channels's I follow. Heaton's, Hilmer's, Helland's, Westby's, Matthieis ... and a whole raft of others. Some claim they have no control or input on captions on their channels that that it's entirely RUclips. Captions have been inconsistent these last three or four months and it's driving me up the wall. >.< Even McKinnon's is hit or miss.
