Brian from 3 Legged Thing - One Year Tripod Review

  • It's been 12 months since I bought Brian from 3 Legged Thing as a lightweight landscape photography tripod and so I decided to do a one year tripod review.
    What's it been like using Brian from 3 Legged thing in the field, with my heavy camera gear? How has it stood up to the abuse that landscape photography tripods inevitably get? Has it ever let me down?
    Would I recommend it?
    Watch the video to find out

    I think I'll be picking this up due to your review. Thanks! I've been on the fence about it for some time now. I like your thoughts on "one size fits all" and how it's not a very realistic mentality to have. To relate it to motorcycles, "dual sport" is not particular great at either sport....not excellent off road, not excellent on the highway, but, for most daily jaunts and commutes, they're really quite enjoyable.

    • @RalphGoldsmith

      I'm glad you found it useful and the tripod is a good lightweight tripod that is vert capable. Your analogy works really well. I don't use Brian that often as I have made weight savings elsewhere for most trips but, when I really want to cut the weight back, Brian goes with me. Thank you for watching and commenting

    Hi Ralph, I have been lookk g at tripods to take to Cicily with me, but have been really pulling my hair out.
    I didn't know whether to go for three legged thing or K & F concept F Concept, but now I know I am going to go for a Brian.
    I have a Panasonic Lumix fz330 bridge camera and a nikon D80 with a 75-300ml lens.
    But will probably on
    Ly use my mobile or the Panasonic on it.

      I'm glad you found it useful Andrew. At the risk of confusing things for you again I did a review recently of a new travel tripod from K&F Concept. Here's a link to it. ruclips.net/video/Glf4nH9fdfY/видео.html
      In summary... 3LT Brian is taller (by quite a bit with the double centre column), can be used without a centre column for getting very low down and has a level on the tripod itself (useful if you shoot panoramas). Also 3LT has excellent customer care. The new K&F tripod is slightly smaller, has thicker legs for a bit more stability and also has a very nice ball head included. It is also a bit cheaper than the Brian.
      I'm sure you will be happy with either choice.
      Thank you for watching and commenting and enjoy your trip

    Interesting video Ralph, like the red colour in tripods. There is a new light travel tripod out now by Manfrotto with a lot of red . Rachael Lerch uses one in a latest vlog. I think its just under £150. I use a Manfrotto 190XPROB. I Like clip locks. I like the look of yours but rather get Manfrotto Eliment the one Rachael Lerch just got. Keep well.

      Glad you found it interesting John. I was always a fan of flip lock rather than twist but now I'm a convert. The twist locks on Brian and Winston are excellent and it was the flip locks on my old Manfrotto tripod (055 CS Pro 3) that let me down and meant I had to buy a new tripod a year ago. Hi, interesting to know how a particular tripod held during the course of a year of 'landscape photography abuse'. Also glad to learn the importance 3LT gives to customer service. Judging by your new purchase I can tell you are very happy with 3LT tripods.
    I would like to ask you how the Airhed Neo and the AirHed Pro compare in terms of the handling experience, pleasure of use, if they are smooth? I appreciate the Pro version will be heavier and take a higher payload.
    The point of the question is understanding that heads are not the weakest links when you talked about stability of the tripod on your previous video. Specially when you pushed the limit of the stability of the tripod on that long exposure with the 200mm, it's the thin legs that are probably the weakest link not the head, wouldn't you say?
    Nevertheless it will be interesting to see a future review of this new tripod and get your thoughts and experience.
    Thanks for sharing.

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  4 года назад +1

      I'm glad you found the review interesting and you are, of course, correct. the limiting factor on the stability is much more related to the legs, in particular the thin bottom legs, than it is to the ball head. The Neo head actually performed pretty well and I never had any issues with the head 'drooping' under weight but it did feel like it needed an extra twist to keep it properly tight. I never used this tripod with my 150-600 lens but I think that would potentially cause some issues with the head as well as the legs. Bother the Neo and Pro heads are very smooth to use and, although they both lack any friction control I never found that to be an issue. The Winston is a much bigger and more stable tripod and I will be doing a review on it in a few weeks but I really want to get out with it on a few more photoshoots before I do. Thank you for watching and commenting

      @@RalphGoldsmith Thanks Ralph I was just wondering if the Brian's head has a safety lock to stop the camera from falling in case it isn't fully tightened? Also, did you also get a L bracket?

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  2 года назад +1

      @@MichaelGreenwoodMG Hi Michael. Do you mean a spring loaded catch like the manfrotto heads? If so there is nothing like this on the 3LT. The head is basic arca swiss compatible grip (a bit like a vice) but I've never felt any need for the safety catch. I had one on an old Manfrotto and I actually found it more of a nuisance than anything else, plus something extra to go wrong (and it did). I always use an L bracket. The 3 legged thing ones are good but it does depend on your camera as some cameras need something specially designed to avoid blocking access to things like the battery door. 3 Legged thIng are really helpful if you need to check anything with them as well. Hope that helps

    Outstanding review. New subscriber here. I am considering Brian for photos while hiking. My heaviest setup would be a Nikon Z6 with the 70-200 f2.8 VR. I'm wondering does the Neo ball head slip with that kind of weight when it is not pointed level? My current ball head slips a bit after tightening with that setup.

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  4 года назад +1

      I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I used Brian with a 70-200 f/2.8 and a Nikon D810 and I never noticed any slip on the head (using the tripod collar on the lens) once tightened and in place. Thank you for watching and commenting, and for subscribing

      @@RalphGoldsmith Thank you for the reply. I'm thinking I will go with the Billy. I don't need the extra height the Brian offers. The Billy looks to be a perfect height. It is longer than the Brian while folded. But, it only has 4 leg sections. Thank you again. I look forward to your future videos. Stay healthy, good sir.

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  4 года назад +1

      @@logiman A good choice if you don't need the extra height the four leg sections will help with stability and it's a fraction lighter than Brian I think

    • @logiman
      @logiman 4 года назад +1

      @@RalphGoldsmith My thoughts exactly. It is indeed a fraction lighter with a bit more stability... theoretically. It's also $20 USD less expensive. But, that really isn't a consideration to be true. It's just a bonus. Although the Billy is a bit longer folded, it will still fit in my travel suitcase. Thank you again for the excellent reviews. They sold me on the 3LT Punk products. Just ordered Billy.

    I am planning to get the Brian v2 for my trip to Namibia soon. As you might know Namibia is famous with it's strong desert winds. How do you think this tripod would cope with high winds?

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  Год назад

      Brian is very stable for a travel tripod but it IS a travel tripod. In strong winds it will be better to keep the tripod a bit lower and maybe hang a bag from it for extra stability. Thank you for watching and commenting

  • @richardgagne7931

    It sound like the biggest factor for vibrations is the winds.

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  2 года назад

      Yes, In general, the lighter the tripod the more wind becomes a problem although you can counter that a bit by hanging a bag from the tripod. Thank you for watching and commenting
