  • This video is my 3 Legged Thing review - of the Winston 2.0 tripod.
    I bought this 3 Legged Thing tripod just before lockdown started and, not that I've had a chance to get out with it on a few photoshoots, I thought I would do a review video.
    I'm going to cover the specifications of Winston 2.0, the features and, of course, what I like about it and anything that I don't like.
    I hope you enjoy it

    Great that you're getting out and about again Ralph, and thanks for another interesting review.
    Your initial review of the 3LT Brian last year gave me the confidence to get one and I really like it. I actually took the plunge at the start of this year (before you said you'd got Winston 2.0) to add a Leo 2.0 (Winston's little brother from the Pro range). I've not had much chance to use it yet with our Welsh version of lockdown so it's good to hear that Winston is shaping up as well as I'd expect. I wanted something more compact and lighter than Winston for carrying on long walks, but still stable enough to use with long lenses. And I really like the idea of all three legs being detachable - I've added the Vanz spiked feet so I can transform it into a tabletop tripod for use in wildlife hides.
    Looking forward to more great videos from you!

    Nice review Ralph! Your review might be the one that convinced me to get it :) Especially the part where you mentioned a 150-600mm on this tripod working out. That is a lens I really want to have in the future so it's nice to know you tried that exact combination.

But with the free multi-tool (that also has that handy bottle opener) there's no real faffing. Glad you enjoyed the review Nick. I've never had any issues with the Winston from a stability point of view. Most tripod legs have a bit of flex to them but so long as the tripod is firmly set down then Winston is rock solid (and I've used it with a Nikon D810 and a 150-600 lens). Nice video. I consider this tripod, but can you tell me if the head is secured to the tripod with screws? I had Brian before but constantly had problems with the head unscrewing itself, so fastening screws is a neccessity.

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  3 года назад

      Glad you liked the video. No, there are no fixing screws on the head but there is a locking ring that clamps up to it.I actually find this useful as I can easily remove the centre column in the field if I want to get really low down but have it in normally if I need the extra height (something I sometimes need here due to the nature of the landscape). What is the diameter of the round part in the tri-mount plate?
    I am asking because I would like to use it with a gimbal head (Wimberley wh-200), which is compatible only with a 2 inch or larger flat mounting platform.

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  2 года назад +1

      I don't think that would be possible with the Winston, it really doesn't have any flat area on top as there is a threaded tube for the centre column collar. I think some of the 'Legends' range from 3LT might have what you need. If in doubt I would suggest contacting them, they are really helpful. Thank you for watching and commenting

    Ralph I am in the market for a new tripod and have looked at Winston and Leo. Is winston portable enough if you are walking with it? I have a budget tripod at the moment and when I put my Sigma 70-200mm (heavy lens) on the ball head it dips slightly which is annoying. So looking for something more sturdy

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  3 года назад +1

      Hi Mark. Winston is very portable. It weighs in at about over 2KG (a bit less if you don't have the centre column in). Although I have gone over to a lightweight camera system I'm still using Winston most of the time and I do some fairly long hikes. Hope that helps

    Thanks, Ralph. I'm trying to decide on a tripod for landscape work and I want to avoid buying Chinese. That's not for technical reasons - I just think we've become too dependent on them. Buying a British-designed and made tripod is appealing, and your experience of this one seems to be good.

    Thank for you for the very detailed review, Ralph, if you don't mind me calling you by your first name! 3 Legged Thing sells another tripod in the Winston's range called the Albert 2.0. I'm stumped as to whether I should get the Winston or the Albert. I want stability, but am also concerned about size. The Albert apparently folds up to a significantly shorter length compared to the Winston. Weight's not really my concern. The Albert could be taken through air travel carry-on, and strapped to a backpack, but fully extended it comes up 10 inches short compared to the Winston, when the center column is removed from consideration, and center columns, so I've read, when extended, add a significant amount of instability. Have you flown with or strapped to a backpack your Winston tripod? Have you had any problems in this regard if you have? Do you often use the center column in an extend configuration and if so do you notice any significant instability when you do?

    • @RalphGoldsmith
      @RalphGoldsmith  2 года назад +1

      I'm glad you found the review useful. I haven't travelled by air with Winston but I suspect it would be too large for most airlines to accept as part of the cabin / hand luggage. If I was going to travel with it I would put it into my hold luggage. If I was planning on travelling with only cabin bags then I would take a lightweight travel tripod instead, of course it wouldn't be quite as tall or stable but that's the compromise. You're right that extending the centre column will reduce stability but it does depend on the circumstances, long exposures with a heavy telephoto lens in windy conditions will be an issue but you can get away with a surprising amount otherwise if you're careful. Thank you for watching and commenting

    • @AuspiciousOncologist
      @AuspiciousOncologist 2 года назад

      @@RalphGoldsmith Thanks, Ralph! Took your advice into my purchase consideration overall, and eventually decided to buy the Albert 2.0. Not only can I travel with it, but carrying it with me in the car and on hikes will be easier as well. Folded it takes up very little space. I've used it a little and have found its versatility to be fantastic. Well constructed. Light. More stable than I had been anxious about. Granted I haven't yet used it outside in high winds. The tripod it's replacing was quite terrible and so this is a huge step up of course, but I think despite that I'm happy with it. Its constituent parts appear well machined, everything on it works relatively smoothly. If anybody reads this and are on the fence like I was maybe this will help them decide. I guess time will tell if the product holds up long term but I'm not very worried about it.

I really like this tripod because it is lightweight and versatility so I use it for most of my work recently. I checked that the camera was well secure as always and turn to work on my computer for a while then suddenly I heard a loud crash and saw my camera and lens on the ground, broken. The orange base was still on the camera so it somehow slipped out of its grip. I was using a D810 with a nikon 105mm f1.4 lens. Sent them in for repairs today, still wait for a quote on that.
