Beef jerky is a very convenient way of preserving meat for long periods of time with no refrigeration.
Trappers used it, when they went into the woods for months at a time. I believe the Native Americans used a similar process called "Pemmican", which may have been where westerners got the idea.
Beef jerky back in the day was very hard and chewy. Modern beef jerky is more tender. It's also a great snack for road trips. Not very messy at all.

Crackers are not cookies. Cookies are sweet and can be chewy or crunchy. Crackers are somewhat plain and always crunchy (at least until put in soup). Crackers are often used as a base for other foods like, cheese, apples, spreads or dips. Beef jerky is a real snack and not limited to cowboys. Hummus is a more recent snack in my area, about last 20 years or so. Not super common at gatherings. Guacamole is more common than hummus. Happy snacking.

The idea of calling someone "nuts" to mean crazy was first seen in 1908, in a newspaper comic strip called Mutt and Jeff. To be “off one's nut” meant to be separated from your head, and thus your senses. That eventually was shortened to the current use, in which someone can simply be “nuts.”

Peanut butter is also basically stable at room temperature and tends to not be perishable like other things like mayonnaise, so makes for good sandwiches that can be left at room temperature for long periods, whereas deli sandwiches need to be refrigerated or they'll go bad, get overrun with bacteria, and give you food poisoning pretty easily. Peanut butter, not-so-much (unless you like explicitly sneeze in it or something? [/sarc]).

I'm honestly not sure what kind of crackers you have in Portugal, but they're nothing like a cookie here in the US. Cookies are generally made with flour, butter, sugar, eggs and just a tiny pinch of salt. They're often soft and chewy on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside. There are some that are thin and crispy, but they still contain a good bit of sugar.
Crackers are made with flour, water, some kind of fat/oil and usually yeast. They're flat and crunchy and some can be flaky, kind of like a good pie crust. While there are a few types that are slightly sweet, like graham crackers, they're mostly either neutral or more savory and salty. The most neutral type of crackers are what are referred to as "water crackers" and they're really quite flavorless, to allow toppings like fine cheeses, thinly sliced meats like prosciutto and smoked fish, to shine through. 😊

-Jerky is a staple. Road trips, camping, hunting, hiking, or just for snacking. Nothing better than beef jerky. Especially if it's homemade. I make it quite often. Everybody eats it. Haha...I bought some today when I was at the neighborhood butcher shop. They make their own, in dozens of flavors, and it's really good. Beef sticks too - they are like little thin lengths of spicy dry sausage.
-Yes - a quick spoonful of peanut butter will knock the hunger pangs down. It's high protein and high energy.
-Surprised you guys don't have hummus. It's a Mediterranean or Middle Eastern chickpea dip. Flavored with garlic, tahini, salt, red peppers. Great and healthy dip with raw veggies, chips, crackers. I buy it pretty often. It's healthy and filling.
-Again, shocked you don't have granola bars!! Pretty healthy if they aren't full of sugar. Whole grains - usually oatmeal, fruit, nuts in a sticky, sweetish (honey?) matrix. Easy road food, hiking, camping, hunting or snacks, See--this stuff doesn't require refrigeration, so easy to take along in the car or outside for the day.
-Crackers aren't sweet. They are more akin to crispy bread. For savory flavors, not sweet at all. Might be cheese, onion, pepper, or garlic flavored.
-Cheese. To do cheeseburgers, etc. you need a kind of cheese that melts good - that's why that fake-looking American cheese slice is so popular.
Yes - we don't always eat all the garbage that the tourists make videos about. We'd all be dead of strokes by the time we were 5 years old.

They come in a few different flavors, but the most popular are the normal ones that have just a little bit of salt with no overpowering additional flavors like Doritos have. Keep in mind that the vast majority of American history was spent in barely developed land with thousands upon thousands of kilometers of frontier land. So of course, the most popular snacks across the ages tended to have a lot in common, namely:
Preservable, easy to transport, energy dense, cheap.
So it's all made from staple foods you'd expect to pack while camping, or from livestock you brought with you to homestead. Stuff like staple vegetables(potato chips and popcorn), beef products(jerky and yogurt), staple grains and nuts(granola and mixed nuts), wheat products(cookies), etc.

I had jerky this afternoon. Every culture seems to have some form of dried meat, but many tribes produced in mass quantities. In historic times, my people survived on it throughout the winter, when hunting was poor. Most of the jerky sold in the States is a flavored version and is rarely plain dried meat.
For a Texas touch, Buc-ee's has lots of good jerky. Their sweet and spicy jerky is my favorite. But, the best jerky I've ever had was from a small place in NM that makes a fantastic green chile jerky. In Sonoran style Mexican food, jerky is cooked with liquid and spices to make at filling for tacos and burritos. If you're ever in Tucson, head to the El Charro Cafe for theire canre seca burro -- yummy.

Cookies contain lots of sugar in their dough, crackers usually have no sugar in the dough and the dough is layered. Most cookies are moist and chewy and most crackers are dry and crispy.
The word "Nut", was used back in the 1800's to refer to your head. They used to say that someone was "off their nut" to mean that they were insane or crazy. I have a standard recipe that I use as a marinade, but sometimes I experiment with things such as hot wing sauce, barbecue sauce, and one time I used wasabi but most of the time I stay basic and it’s a recipe that I do not share with strangers. It’s simple and it doesn’t include soy sauce, which is common with homemade beef jerky. I don’t use soy sauce or garlic powder. I use only three ingredients and it is extremely delicious and I’m not just saying that because I make it. Other people like it too.

beef jerky is HUGE here in the states. you can get it at a wide variety of moisture levels, thicknesses, cuts of meat, and flavors you can also get it made from just about any kind of meat. beef and pork are the common ones but if you go to a specialized shop you can get deer, bison, turkey, and all sorts of meats that are very odd like ostrich and alligator (the weird stuff is mostly a gimmick or for adventurous eater)

    Here is my recipe:
    Sweet Fire Jerky:
I use top round sirloin and have the butcher cut it for jerky.
    1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
    1/2 cup teriyaki sauce
    1/2 cup soy sauce
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    1 tablespoon garlic salt
    1 tablespoon onion powder
    1 teaspoon crushed red peppers
    1 teaspoon black pepper
    1 teaspoon lemon pepper
    1 teaspoon liquid smoke
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Add 1 to 2 pounds thinly sliced meat, small pieces. Let meat sit in marinade overnight. Dehydrate 4-8 hours, depending on size of strips, at 155 degrees.

@@barbaracabrera207 the butcher will know but yes thin is best. Cutting on the grain will create one texture and cutting against the grain will create another. I can’t remember which is which. My butcher just knows me and what I want. I make it all the time for my daddy and brother.

Tillamook jerky used to be really good until the company was sold. Costco has some jerky steak that is really awesome! Humus is sold with all kinds of additions. I currently have three flavors in my fridge. A great late night snack is a handful of dark chocolate chips melted in the microwave (about 1 minute on high), then mixed with a couple serving spoons full of peanut butter.

It been a few weeks since I've had any jerkey.
Jerkey, meat dried for preservation, is a time-honored method for preserving and carrying meats.
Not just beef but pork, chicken, bison, venison (deer), bear (!), alligator (actually very tasty), eastern diamondback rattlesnake (also very good and, No, Not endangered) and more.
In Norway Lutefisk is a type of dried (jerked) fish...a bit of an aquired taste as I understand it. If I make it to Norway that is on the "to do" list for sure!

Beef jerky is highly popular. It's a great snack food but also a really good source of protein. I haven't had any in a while but that's mainly because I don't really think about it when I'm buying snacks. Yes, I do eat a spoonful of peanut butter all the time. GoGurt is great for kids to take to school in their lunch boxes. Freeze it and by lunchtime, it has defrosted but is still cold. I will even buy them because I like the flavors better, lol.
Tostitos are a plain corn chips used for dipping for salsa, cheese, guacamole, etc.

Hummus is very popular here in the US. It's used like a dip or a spread with pita bread, pita chips, vegetables, and crackers. It's delicious and healthy. It's easy to make. There are tons of videos on RUclips about how to make hummus. If you are trying to have a healthy diet then I suggest giving this a try.

I've had the opposite issue combining "cookie" and "cracker" into "biscuit" for UK English or "galleta" in Spanish. Cookies are "sweet biscuits" and crackers are "savory biscuits". They are two distinct types of items, and it seems that US English is possibly the only language (or maybe just the only language I'm familiar with) that has a different name for these two different items. Although, I believe Canadians probably use "cookie" and "cracker" rather than "biscuit". They do tend to share an aisle at the grocery store, however.
In the US, we have biscuits, but they are neither cookies nor crackers, they are a completely different baked good.

For just plain eating, I tend to prefer biltong over jerky, but Jerky works a lot better for packing for a hike if you're going to use it for cooking or similar.
Also the main thing with crackers is that they aren't intended to be sweet and more of something to either put stuff on or put them in (such as oyster crackers or goldfish...though goldfish and similar cheese crackers can do well on their own, especially for younger kids).
Cookies tend to be more in the sweets side of things and are more often made to be eaten on their own, though several have variants that aren't while they initially are on a basic, recipe level for more on their own.
Another comparison is that cookies are more like cakes while crackers are more like bread

I can't eat it because I can't touch garlic or onion, but I hear good things about it. Yes to granola bars! Oh, yes, to cookies and to nuts as well! Also use walnuts in oatmeal; very healthy. Crackers aren't cookies; they are quite different from cookies but also good. Fruit s always good. All knds of cheese are eatten. It does make a good snack, but it is so good in so many foods! All of the honorable mentions are great snacks. And yes, chocolate and popcorn are wonderful! I'm going tohave to eat some chocolate chip cookies or Ferrero Rocher Chocolate after watching this although a piece of cheese sounds good as well and perhaps healthier. Diane, using Joe's tablet.

    Yogurt: Common snack.
    Jerky: 5 seconds ago.
Hummas: Been awhile simply because I have to avoid cumin, which is a common ingredient, so I’m more likely to make it at home than purchase it. I believe it originated in the Middle-East, but it’s been whole heartedly adopted here as a savory healthy snack.
Granola bars: Again, been a while, I should pick some up.
Cookies: A lot of people keep them as a pantry staple. Will often have their own aisle at the stores.
Nuts: Oh, yeah. My favorites are raw pecans, and wasabi-almonds.
Crackers: Totally different thing than cookies, though sweet versions are sometimes used in constructing cookies. But in general our crackers fall on the bland to savory side, and are thin wafers paired with cheese, deli meats, dips and such.
    Fruit: Definitely.
Cheese: I’m a bit of a cheese addict myself.
Chips: Like cookies, they have their own aisle at the stores.

Every American has eaten s spoonful of peanut butter. My brother eats half a jar I'm one setting. With just a spoon and a glass of milk. I used to put Reese's pieces or m&ms in a jar of it and eat it.
Remove hummus or replace it with ranch and veggies. I like to eat cheese, crackers, turkey and/or ham, and black olives all together as well. Like a charcuterie I guess. And add cereal, salad, a deli meat sandwich, and grilled cheese.

Chickpea blended with little olive oil or sesame seed oil toasted are not, a lot of people use ground sesame seeds spread in it lemon juice or lime, garlic, salt pepper to taste I add little cumin, cyan pepper, paprika, fresh cilantro on top. cheese grated mixed in or just on top. Dip chips in it or veggies. But I rather use white beans like navy beans instead of chickpeas.
