Hey Eck, thanks for sharing this! I was having a very similar set of issues, poor framerates, multiple crashes, often both in battle, entering and exitting battle and on galactic conquest. Thought it was jacked up mod files or something to be honest. Had just reinstalled with no real change and then ran across your epiphany episode and it cleared up almost all the issues once I applied the change. Now I'm only seeing crashes after winning a battle on certain planets and I zoom in to the planet to see my forces, where it promptly crashes. Work around I've found, is to pull all my forces from the planetary surface in the general galactic campaign map, the whole planet-side stack and then zoom in, and drop one or two troopers as a garrison before moving on. Only seems to do it on a handful of planets though.
Not really an issue that can be patched. The problem is the issue is baked essentially into the DNA of the foundational / framework coding of the game itself. Only way to fix it would be to recode the entire game, at which point, you're essentially making Empire at War 2. Really, I don't remember it being an issue back in 2006 when the game came out. Ecks explanation makes sense. And I think it was because back then, playing the game Windowed wasn't a typical gameplay mode, where this is applicable. At least not for the vast majority of players. Another thing to consider, multiple displays were rare, which would encourage using a feature such as a hardware mouse. If you have one monitor, there was really no point playing it windowed. Fast-forward 16+ years, well, now I and a lot of people rock multi-monitor displays, for instance I'm rocking Quad Monitors both at home and work. Playing Windowed is a luxury this day and age, but for a game from 2006, it like asking it to walk and chew bubblegum at the same time. And it's trips, bad depending on the setup.
It's not actually your CPU that cannot handle the stress but actually the latency within processes. With hardware mouse cursor the EAW will fetch the mouse from the dwm (desktop window manager) that basicly handles drawing anything Windows related. So now instead of EAW just "reading" the mouse location directly it needs to run to another process which then reads the mouse location and compares it to what it has going on (more than one monitor and at this point, you start to be F'ed), draws the mouse cursor by itself and then tells EAW where the mouse is and then EAW starts its own loop to draw its own mouse cursor and anything that has been halted until the mouse location has been figured out.
Wow, that is a game changer! I had to downgrade to a 960m Laptop and I thought I may become a struggle to continue EAW videos, but this, this is fantastic!
Okay, this is weird, this video helped me solve a mouse-related issue, but not in this game, in Supreme Commander Forged Alliance, I was playing with a few friends and was having massive stutter issues despite having a high-end PC, turns out, the mouse was seemingly causing said issue. It's an RTS released not long after EAW, so I just moved around the mouse around the screen in the main menu, and it caused said issues, and, after googling, found a fix within 5 minutes. So, thanks for that.
How did you get it to run in 1440p? That resolution doesn't show up for me under options, have tried adding launch option - fullscreen 2560 x 1440, no joy.
Its a bit weird that when Petroglyph Games updated Empire at War recently precisely because they wanted to support the modding community, they didn't make the game able to use more than one CPU-core
Because that would take a complete re-write of the whole game engine and game design from the bottom up, it's not nearly as easy as flipping a switch (unless it was designed that way from the get go). It would literally be easier to start a new EAW game from scratch than rebuild this version.
@@vanguardian1 Oh really, because there are many other games with a similar problem, where the devs have been able to update it to run on more CPU-cores. There is also a user created patch for Medieval 2 total war that does the same thing. Why is it so much more complicated on EaW?
@@Uberdude6666 The other guy response was on point, you can't make an engine engage into multiple cores when it was designed to handle just one, there is also a difference between multiple threads and cores, you can open multiple threads at once in one core, this is way easier because every core manages its own times, memory pools, cache and more. Meanwhile communicating between cores can be time consuming and demands an additional level of synchronization, when you need to combine the tasks results. Some cases are feasible, like the ones using a free engine like Unreal, but that engine was already packed with support for multiple cores, that is not the case here.
