@@akamii1 Just has to do with what direction the force is from. more common in football to be hit on the lateral side on your legs than the medial side; and thus the mcl must attempt to resist medial displacement from the laterally incoming force vector . You typically only get hit on the medial side of the knee in football if you're in the middle of a plant and someone hits you from the inside instead (and would thus stress the lcl). ACL's are common in football too because of how common it is for players to fall into the backs of other players knees (notably offensive linemen; and as such it causes an force vector pointing anteriorly that stresses that ligament)

Hey Doctor. I’m guilty of not letting my MCL heal right and I do have it stretched which leads to a lot of overcompensating of my ankle and hip. Is there any therapy I can get to heal it correctly now even though the injury happened 10 years ago?
I was simply running from 1st base to 2nd base when I stepped wrong and completely ruptured my mcl, it hurt a lot. I had surgery done and came back the next year. The next year I did the same thing but only torn not ruptured, took a long break and came back the next year just for me to do it again. Next surgery I have is a bolt implant when my leg growth plates are fully closed.
Allas go lucky with this, if Chubb doesn’t go down they allow 500 yards rushing. And 600 combined, yes they were that bad. On the real hope Chunny gets back to 100%
Can you do a video on hamstring injuries and how the COVID issue/shutdown has affected this? My NFL team has had a ton of hamstring issues. It has to be connected.
Hey Doc, there seems to be an abnormally high rate of injuries this year in the NFL.. I understand that COVID was the main factor, but do you think not having a preseason/conventional training camp also could have been factors as well?
I tore my MCL, ACL, Meniscus, and Hoffa Pad in one injury and the MCL tear was easily the most agonizing. Full disclosure I only had a very small ACL tear and had to have my meniscus and Hoffa Pad surgically repaired not my MCL or ACL
Jake Allen I was sprinting down the sideline of a turf field during a soccer game and my cleat got stuck inside of a drainage grate that surrounded the whole field. I fell with my cleat and left still stuck and then the defender fell on top of my leg
All the mcl does is provide medial stability to the knee. You can tear a knee ligament and still have more than enough functionality to walk it off (unlikey b/c it usually accompanies quite a bit of pain but not all cases). Ie: Joe flacco tore his MCL and ACL in 2015 (both grade 3), he stayed on the field not knowing he tore them (he showed slight discomfort). He then scored a TD jogged to the locker room b/c the knee was bothering him a bit and his season was over without him ever going down in physical pain.
Immobilization of an mcl is due to structural healing. Having the leg locked in extension allows proper healing of the mcl. He does explain it in the video.
Brandon Kinzer I heard him. I’ll look into it more. I’m guessing a week or two until the MCL is healed enough to start passive/active ranges of motion.
You seem to be ignoring the fact that the defensive lineman wasn't just falling. An offensive player was throwing him to the ground. The knee was hit by the weight of both the defensive lineman and the offensive lineman pushing him to the ground. Maybe that extra weight doesn't matter, but I would think that could make the situation worse.
Please don't take this the wrong way, but this season has given you waaaayyy too much content to work with. I'm happy to learn and love the information...but dang man injuries suck.
Serious question we have a bye week coming up I think it 4 to 5 weeks is it possible to return a week earlier from this injury? If so would you suggest he doesn't come back early?
No. It's not recommended they come back early. EVER. A hard enough hit to that same knee can have catastrophic damage and may cause career ending results.
Nice video, Doc 🙏🙏. Check the injury of Santiago Arias from Columbia national team. It happened yesterday. Me as a physio would like to thank you for your good content. kudos🙏
He’s very lucky he didn’t tear his MCL, medial meniscus, and acl. We are learning about the unhappy triad in medical school lol Edit: I didnt wait until the end of the video to post my comment lol
Congruency and ease in identifying the issue. To the average person it might sound complicated and unnecessary but to anyone in sports science it makes for very quick and easy assessment not only of the precise injury but the most likely reason for the injury itself (ie:MCL tear is cause by a lateral force vector that stresses the MCL via medial displacement of the joint capsule) Medial v lateral = a defined position similar to east v west; just for the body instead. Collateral = a ligament specific to a Hinge Joint (in this case the knee); but we also have collaterals at all other hinge joints such as the phalangeal joints in the fingers, or the elbow joint
imagine a sprain like a paper a very tiny tear is a grade 1 grade 2 a bigger tear can vary all up to tearing it complete as a grade 3 i agree with the doctor it a grade 2 because grade 3 always means surgery
mo-hunnit yeah the team doctors said he’s out for about 6 weeks so it’s definitely serious, but not the worse case possible. As a browns fan I’m happy not just for him but the team he can return this year. Also if you never seen his college injury you should look it up, it was one of the worst injury’s I ever seen.
Strain/tear is equivalent here for all intents and purposes. A strain is stretching and tearing of the fibers, to varying degrees
It seems like MCL tears are more common than LCL tears, do you know why that is?
