I am in awe of how still they remained in the opening. I didn't see any movement whatsoever, I thought it was a picture! Remaining that still in such positions itself is must take a lot of control and dedication. Bravo!
I''m afraid it is actually a still.. You can see the dancer most to the left, whose right foot is already raised, and his cloak already is motion by it. Indeed, the inclined angles of several of the cloaks of the performers suggest the very same: if the footage were moving, their cloaks would be bound by the laws of physics to move also
I never like music videos with a still picture (or a slide gallery) during the whole video. So I was about to click away but then they started dancing. But as has been remarked: it's a still those first few seconds...
One could imagine the youthful Louis XIV dancing the more limited role of the golden figure, the center of the ballet, as he is the center of the country.
@@Smallpotato1965 And people in San Francisco have their own forms of entertainment too, right? I think this is a wonderful an sweet thought (entertainment as a relief), but I think ballet in this form was mostly for people in court. Everything was centered around the king, so I imagine the entertainment was mostly for him. Oh, the horror of making a misstep at court, dancing with the king! The stress was probably for the dancers, but then again, they weren't the ones living in poverty...
On the very last second of this video, we can see the conductor. He looks like very much Hervé Niquet, so the orchestra may well be Le Concert Spirituel.
From the website link posted by Les Malins Plaisirs: “Les Amants Magnifiques, comédie-ballet en cinq actes de Molière et Lully par Les Malins Plaisirs, Le Concert Spirituel et la compagnie de danse L’Éventail.” The orchestra is led by Hervé Niquet. Although this video beats the River Dance style stuff you usually see called French baroque ballet, it's too bad the videos of the dances in the 1653 "Ballet de la nuict" reconstruction are so bad. I wish they'd stuck to choreography like in the movie instead of hiring a choreographer who must have been educated in the pre-1989 East German school of staging.
Entrancing! The best Baroque performance I've seen.

TROP BEAU ! Merci Lully, merci Louis XIV !!!
C'était la France qui rayonnait !
Lovely . . . lovely, indeed . . . and the Apollo (if Apollo he be - he certainly looked Apollonic) was also lovely. Bravo!
The golden dancer (Apollo) was originally played by young king Louis XIV at French court.

PLAISIR TOTAL....MERCI...
Long time i hadn't seen a ballet with a choreography and costumes I found beautiful and charming.
Brilliantly Preformed
Merveilleuse danse baroque.

Beautiful, elegant, and powerful. It looked like Louis xiv, the Sun King, dancing surrounded by his court.

They already did a Bal des ardents in 1393, though in those days technical limitations required that the entire costume be set on fire. =D
