The picture shown is named " Louis XIV receiving Prince de Condé at château de Versailles". It as been painted by Jean-Léon Gérome in 1878, longtime after the ceremony. Gerome was belonging to the category of the official painters of the french Third Republic like Rochegrosse wich were called "Peintres Pompiers". They specialized themeselves in historical representations. Best regards
En fait cette peinture relate le pardon du roi à son cousin Condé qui l'avait trahi en combattant aux côtés des espagnols contre lui. La peinture exprime la puissance (du roi) la gloire (de la France) et le repentir (du prince).

@@Heimrik01 Condé a effectivement gagné la bataille de Rocroi contre les Espagnols en 1643, mais après l'échec de la Fronde en 1652, Fronde durant laquelle il s'est opposé à Mazarin et donc au roi, il est parti se réfugier auprès du roi d'Espagne encore en guerre contre la France. Le roi d'Espagne lui a obtenu le pardon de Louis XIV lors du traité des Pyrénées en 1659 qui a mis fin à la guerre qui durait depuis 1635.
Dans l'escalier des Ambassadeurs, détruit par Gabriel pour aménager les nouveaux appartements, hélas !

C'est la classe ces fanfares. Le roy Louis XIV avait du gout. Il savait choisir ses artistes. Il était lui-même artiste, ça aide. Et toujours en hommage à la France. Ce n"était pas le narcissique que l'on veut parfois nous faire croire, mais bien un serviteur de la gloire de la France. Il essayait lui-même d'être le plus brillant possible afin de faire honneur à la France qu'il voulait servir ...comme peu d'hommes ont su le faire. Voilà mon sentiment et ma conviction. (Et je me suis documenté! ) Je vous en fais aujourd hui la confidence. J'espère que certains d'entre vous apprécient=)

Lol j'aime beaucoup les gens qui fantasme des parties de l'histoire qui ont déjà été longtemps fanstasmée par nos ex historiens* (ceux avant qu'on cherche à faire véritablement de la recherche historique).
Bravo, belle analyse, il a reconstruit l'état après la Fronde et à tout consacré à son pays. Aucune comparaison avec les marionnettes républicaines manipulées par la banque mondiale

Di ben altro tenore era la vita popolare, ma nonostante ciò la cultura musicale europea ha continuato a sfornare i più grandi compositori di tutti i tempi...senza menzionarne alcuno per non fare un torto a nessuno.

I also walked down exactly these stairs at Versailles. Breathtaking when I see this painting.
It probably depicts the return of Robert, Sieur de La Salle, from North America. He will inform His Majesty that France now controls all of the land drained by the Mississippi River (what we now think of as the American middle west) Modest as ever, the Sun King will name the new land Louisiana.
Attention ce merveilleux escalier a été détruit par Louis XV pour loger ses filles. Vous confondez sans doute avec les deux "Cent marches" (Est et Ouest) qui encadrent l'Orangerie, à l'extérieur donc. On les voit dans le film L'allée du roi. Louis 2 de Bavière grand admirateur de Louis XIV , a fait bâtir l'escalier des ambassadeur ET la Galerie des glaces (!) en plus grand paraît il dans un de ses châteaux : Herrensee ?

André Danican Philidor, the composer of this march, was the world best chess player of his time. After him is named the "the Philidor Defence", an opening he advocated, the "Philidor's Legacy", a type of smothered mate, and the "Philidor's position", an endgame position.

André Danican Philidor (1647-1730) was a musician (oboe, crumhorn and timpani), chief Librarian of the Royal Music Library and composer. His younger brother Jacques Philidor also was a musician, they both composed this "Marche à Quatre Timbales", a march for two pairs of kettledrums (timpani), played as a duo. André is the father of François-André Danican Philidor (1726-1795), who also became a composer and is regarded as the best chess player of his age. It is easy to confuse father and son's achievements. Most of the Philidors were musicians before François-André.

Fun fact : Philidor was also one of the greatest chess player of its time.
Actually, I have the CD with the last piece and there are an error in the description of this video. The Philidor who composed this piece was not this one (who mainly composed opéras-comiques), but André Danican Philidor "l'ainé" (1652-1730) with his brother Jacques Danican Philidor "le cadet" (1657-1708).
Philidor l'ainé is the father of François-André Danican Philidor "le Grand" (1726-1795) who is the famous chess player you are speaking about.

Trotz kritischen Hinterfragens der gesellschaftlichen Verhältnisse der Zeit des Louis XIV höre ich in der Tat Lullys Werke mit großem Vergnügen. (Und gelegentlich übrigens auch Einiges von M. A. Charpentier.)
Der kritischen Fragen bedürfen meiner Meinung nach alle bisherigen gesellschaftlichen Ordnungen. Gleichwohl ist in den meisten von ihnen große & bewegende Kunst geschaffen worden. Und diese sollte für alle Zeiten bewahrt & gepflegt werden - es ist unser Aller kulturelles Erbe.
Danke für Ihren Hinweis auf die Pomeranos in Brasilien. Ich wusste das nicht, finde es aber recht interessant.
