    These tests prove once again how important VRR is for handheld gaming.
    Keeping a 48 fps compared to 60 helps tons for battery life.

    • @filt3rless

      100% VRR is huge. And the LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) which allows it to go to 30FPS is another big bonus at these power levels 🙂

    Love my Ally.. I had a deck for a year and that was decent enough but the power of the ally is fantastic. Personally the “windows” experience is fine I’ve never had any issues treating the Ally like a gaming Pc/Laptop.. thanks for the video!

      The Ally is a much better "PC" type machine with unlimited freedom. I also have the OLED Steam Deck, which I love, but it has it's limitations. I think the Ally is a fantastic machine, especially after running all these benchmarks. I can see where in docked mode, it's still awesome (the steam deck isn't at all haha). Great video! That jump to 30w with diminishing returns😅 Speaking of which if i can make a suggestion could you make a video with fan curves for 12,17/18 unplugged and 25/30 plugged for best noise/temp balance? I tend to overshoot one way or the other😂

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks! And yeah there isn't much gain for going to really high watts. For fan curves I like to use G-Helper since it runs the default profile fan curves from Armoury Crate. So 18W in Performance mode still sounds like if you were using 15W in Armoury Crate.
      Any custom fan curve, in G-Helper and AC I found too loud. So I prefer to not set custom fan curves.

    Another great video, thank you! Once AMD releases the FMF drivers for Ally, it would be very interesting to test it with different wattages and see its real benefits (also considering latency). What do you think? Keep it up with the great work m8!

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 месяцев назад +3

      Thanks! I think the AFMF is probably going to have too much latency on the 7840U chips. I could be wrong, but I don't think there is enough overhead in the chip for it to be usable. And the Ally has VRR and LFC (Low Framerate Compensation) so it can go to 30FPS and still look smooth.

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 месяцев назад +6

      There is very little difference between 25 and 30 watts. Ive found 30W to be almost pointless to run. 25W is what I use for high power. Then 17W for mid and 12W for battery saving.

    • @ezg8448
      @ezg8448 6 месяцев назад +2

      In almost all cases, the performance difference between 30 and 25 watts is only 5% at best.
      Might as well lower it for more battery life or a quieter fan.

    Amazing video, but what fan curve are you using?

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 месяцев назад

      I'm using a program called G-Helper which mimics the Armoury Crate profile. So the 18W is still running off the Armoury Crate performance fan curve (so it's virtually silent).

    Can you save custom power profiles for each game? because there doesn't seem to be a one size fits all for games. You really need to tune each game with how much juice you give it. From what I've seen it seems to be..
    12w : Emulation
    15w: Older, less demanding games at high/ultra settings
    18-25w: Older but still demanding games & newer less demanding games at low,medium,high settings
    30w: New Triple A games which may or may not be playable at low settings only.

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 месяцев назад +1

      In Armoury Crate you can set a per game watt setting. The only thing I don't like about AC is I like to change the wattage on the fly. And AC will immediately override the settings if you've set any and minimize/re-open the window. So I prefer to use a program called G-Helper which allows me to switch pretty quickly, as well as set custom watts.

    • @filt3rless
      @filt3rless  6 месяцев назад

      The 15W and 30W are manually set to keep the watts from boosting to 43+. In the default "Performance" mode, Asus will boost the watts from 15W to 20W for 2 minutes every time you start a game. And the "Turbo" mode will boost up to 43W for 2 minutes. This just causes unnecessary heat and battery drain.

    • @fresco_dinero5155
      @fresco_dinero5155 6 месяцев назад +4

      Waste of power is exaggeration. Some games it can be 10-15 fps going from 18-30w. Others it can be 30fps. And 30W is good for stabilizing the frame time. So even if you get 5 fps more, it will also have more consistent frame pacing.
      On the tests, the 30w line is always the most strait and therefore the smoothness will be a good lil bonus
