    I’ve only got into this hobby of painting miniatures recently and a few people have told me that I need to black line my Space Marines. As I don’t have a steady hand I have been finding it hard to do. Now that I’ve just seen your method using the contrast paint and medium, I can’t wait to try you way. It looks a lot easier. Thank you for explaining it in easy terms as well. For a beginner like me, it helps a lot.

    A good recommendation when doing edge highlighting - or any detail painting really: Keep a clean, damp brush on hand and if you make a mistake, you can usually wipe it away before it dries. Also if you lay a line on too thick you can use the "oops brush" as I call it to feather the line and restore the highlight.

    11:00 A ridiculous Tron-looking Space Marine lolol!
    Seen that many a time when friends have over highlighted their Blood Angels. Damned things look luminous
    PC, I have just subbed to your channel now after the last one I watched on painting Salamanders.
    Your videos and painting techniques are simple, effective, and skillful.
    No OTT shading, no OTT airbrushing, none of that other stuff I see in other videos and tutorials on how to blend excessively to the point the model looks like a Bob Ross painting.
    You're straight to the point, and use time-tested successful methods, and you do them perfectly and with dialogue that's easy to follow and understand... and that's why I'm loving the tutorials so far.
    Good job man.
    I'm probably gonna be watching your other videos for the rest of the weekend tbh :D

    They gloss shades are just so that the wash flows better, they are better for getting the wash into the areas where it should be. When its dry, just paint some lahmian medium or matt varnish over it. I don't like gloss models, but the gloss washes are great! =)

    Thank you! While there are several tutorials to paint Ultramarines, most of them used either a mixture of paints (too incosistent imo), looked great but not like Ultramarines (mostly the ones using Airbrushes), were not neat enough or way beyond any decent mix of high standard and practicability (a very good eavy metal tutorial). Your tutorial seems to finaly be what i was looking for: A very nice looking, high standard paintjob and yet someone wouldnt spend a months entire sparetime on a single line infantry miniature. So again thank you and with all the other videaos you realy earned yourself a sub 🙂

      @@ThePaintingCoach I wonder if you could make a Blood Raven paint tutorial this way some day. I think it is one of the most interesting chapters lorewise, but the color scemes seem to be a bit inconsistent. GWs Index Astartes for example conflicts with the games and artwork. I would have loved to bring my DoW2 force commander and his 4th company to the tabletop, but refering to the Index Astartes the would use green company markings (which is the most ugliest of all and not in line with the game) and so far i haven't really seen a fitting paintjob using the supposed Khorne Red as base color. All these inconsistencies have kept me away from my big project so far: Recreating the entire fourth company according to the lore as i think my force commander would have rebuild it as its captain after th third aurelian crusade (meaning most of them would be Primaris marines, having a Land Raider, a venerable Dreadnought, several ingame characters etc.)

    Do you ever sculpt with green stuff?
    Id like to see you do a Guardians of the Covenant tutorial. Painting up a few troops, but also showing the many different ways you can craft tunics, capes, hoods, taberds, etc to individualize a squad.
    Im wanting to start a Guardians army bad but never tried my hand at sculpting. Beginners anxiety stopping me more than anything. I connect with your teaching style tho. If you could walk me through a couple of decent sculpts i know it will probably be the needed push.

    I am completely new to Warhammer. Why are some painted with red helmets and such and some aren't? Do all "Sergeants" have red helmets?

    • @ThePaintingCoach
      @ThePaintingCoach  4 года назад

      Thanks for the comment Jacob! In general all Sergeants have red helmets with a skull icon on them (this is modelled on)
      Some may also have a white stripe down the middle - these are veteran sergeants.
      These are known as 'codex compliant' chapters - if you can get hold of the space marines codex as this explains it in more depth (although there will be a new one coming out after July)

      That’s great thank you! Looking forward to trying out your shading method as I’ve always found that the trickiest to get right. One other quick question: do you always tend to paint your models assembled? And if so, any tricks for getting into the difficult areas

    • @ThePaintingCoach
      @ThePaintingCoach  4 года назад

      No problem! If you can get hold of some Macragge Blue spray, that will probably help speed things up!
      I try to leave weapons off if they cover the chest, and leave bare heads off as I tend to prime them a different colour. I build as muxh as the model as I can, until I feel it will be difficult to reach some parts - I hope that helps!

    I’m going to try to paint my first Space Marine figure, and I was wondering where most of the paints you used were from. I know that some of them are from the Citadel Essentials set, but I can’t find where you got the other paints from. Also, like the other comments, this is one of the best painting tutorials for the Ultramarines I’ve seen if not the best.

    • @ThePaintingCoach
      @ThePaintingCoach  4 года назад +1

      Hi Matthew - thank you for your support and the kind words! All the paints I use are citadel, apart from the chrome, which is from the Vallejo model air range - I hope that helps!

    • @battlebrothernerael5953
      @battlebrothernerael5953 4 года назад +1

      The Painting Coach - Thank you! In hindsight, I probably could have looked up the names of the paints that weren’t in the essentials set, but that’s on me. That leads me to my next two questions: Is there a way to buy the paints in bulk, or do you have to buy each paint individually outside of the essentials set? Is there a set of paint brushes that you recommend (asking since you may have changed your mind since making this video)?

    • @ThePaintingCoach
      @ThePaintingCoach  4 года назад +1

      That's no problem! I'm not aware of a way to buy in bulk - sometimes GW does collections - where they pull all the paint for an ultramarine into a pack and around christmas time they do the mega paintset which has every colour in it! You may also be able to find something on amazon
      As for brushes, I use Winsor & Newton series 7 - size 00, 0 and 1. They are great brushes and I highly recommend them - when looking there are 2 versions - avoid the version called 'miniature' they aren't bad at all but hold a lot less paint and so are less efficient
