I can understand soldering looks intimidating and difficult, but once you try it out it's really not. I thought the same thing before I tried, and it's can be frustrating depending what you're doing, but I'm still learning myself but something like this is actually very simple. You can get a simple soldering tool for about $25-$30 depending where you go, you just need some solder, and copper solder wick to get started. Just watch some video on how to, find a simple project and go from there.

One important thing to note is that you absolutely have to remove the foam from both the front and back of the LCD screen or else everything won't quite fit. I missed the front foam, just didn't realize I needed to, and none of these video guides ever expressly say you have to remove it, some don't even show it removed.

Wonderfully impressive. I wish I could’ve seen this back in 2005. On the bus ride down to Disney World I had to ask the kid in front on me to borrow his SP since I didn’t have a light. He was going to sleep and I played for 2 hours hahah.

I was just thinking about getting a new screen for one of my older gameboy advanced today (and figuring out to install it). Didn't even type into my phone a search for screens or anything...just thought about it in my head and then THIS pops up in my recommended. :0
Finally got around to doing mine, trimming the bezel and soldering the wire was a pain, only to learn I had the wrong adapter (washed out picture) so had to order a 40 pin type-B. Hopefully will look good when all is said and done.
Great video! Make sure to remove the screen protector from the new screen as well, you didn't show it in this video! And in some cases you need to adjust the POT on the GBA to make sure it has the correct levels of gamma and brightness!

No not really, its actually pretty easy because its not that hard to get the tip on the joint and hold it there and then you just have to wait a second until the solder gets liquid and then you put the wire in the solder and just let it go. That Easy :D (sorry for my bad English im German :D)
I'm not sure if someone had a batch of new screens produced but most screens I have seen on Ebay say used so they do come from innocent SP that donated their pieces.
SP AGS-101 has the best screen but the original GBA is the most comfortable to hold. A modded AGB with 101 screen is often considered the best way to play GBA games.
Ya i get that, but like it's 50 bucks for the backlight plus the work or 50 ish bucks to buy an SP. But this does look nice combine it with a rechargeable battery pack and you're in business, which is like another 50 bucks haha.

just got around to doing this mod. Think i may have left too much plactic behind the screen because when i hold gba a certain way the lcd has marks like it's being pressed, also now my power button is weaklike i tap it and console turns off or resets. Motre work needed u guess
Ok, I am easily impressed that anybody can mod a gba and I would want to carefully attempt trying it out w/ my old gameboy, but my question is would you easily lose power with the backlit screen? Because this gba model only uses reg. batteries, I think they’ll run out of juice very fast. Unless someone actually did a tutorial on modding a gba with the SP model charging pak, I’d say this could be one con against pros of getting the backlit screen.
The original GBA runs on for about 20 hours with two regular batteries, a lot for that era. The backlight screen doesn't change that much. its a hell of a game, i have played on emulators.. nothing beats the simplicity of gba games, just a man and a simple machine that doesnt have annoying internet connection.

What you do is you sneak it into your bedroom use a flashlight while hiding under a blanket.

Usually the foam is sticked to the old screen, so when you remove the screen also remove the foam. That's whay no one, even me, say to remove it.

I had someone else mod mine.You need to have eagle eyes and a steady hand to solder the wires.

In stead of of all that work, just get a gameboy advanced sp or a ds/ds lite, which are already backlit.
Only AGS-101 model is backlight, rest are frontlight.
In my opinion the GBA SP was too small. I loved the feel of the original
