Good show bhoys. A lot of great points and discussion.
Firstly, it's been a very good season so far. We have shown a very high level of consistency, especially domestically, but also had very good performances in the CL. The players and manager deserve a lot of credit for that.
However, I agree we have allowed a passiveness to creep into our play, which has to be eradicated.
For me, it started in the cup final and then hit its height at the bigotdome in a dire performance and result. It was evident again last night v Dundee in the players and the manager.
Too many players were not competing and not being aggressive enough with and without the ball. Trusty was going down and showing weakness in duels, our midfield weren't winning enough 1st and 2nd balls, especially in the 2nd half, and Idah didn't show anywhere near the hunger or conviction required.
I don't mind strikers missing chances, but on two occasions, 1 in each half, especially the chance Kyogo crossed to him in the first half, he went in half hearted .. as Paul said he should've fully committed to that ball and forced the ball through the keeper and into the net.. strikers need show that willingness to take knocks to get goals.
He was well off it. He also pulled out of a couple of headers v their cente half, which I noticed he did last Wednesday v Dundee United..very bad sign.. he needs to up his effort and aggression if he wants to be in the team and be good enough for us. Last season he proved he can be so hopefully he will again.
The manager's reactions and decisions have also been passive and inflexible. At Ibrokes and last night he could've changed the shape.. e.g. play 2 strikers in a 4-4-2 or 4-1-3-2..try something different to influence the game in our favour, but last night when we needed more aggression and tempo he took off McCowan for Hatate.. Hatate is an excellent footballer but doesn't do the basics and compete.. bringing on Palma was also baffling..he couldve put Kenny, who showed hunger and desire last Saturday, up top, kept Kyogo where he was and kuhn on left.
We need more quality, freshness and enthusiasm in our squad. For me Yang & Palma need hunted and I'd like a top quality winger who can play on both sides and I'd also sign Armstrong from Kilmarnock as back up to Kuhn.. He has proved, including v us, he can be effective in the SPFL and i think he could do a job for us, especially domestically. I also agree that we need a proper physical and powerful defensive midfielder who can break up play and protect he defence. Calmac isn't that player. Mcgregor is such an intelligent and gifted player that he can play anywhere in midfield, but in away games, especially v better opposition he is becoming less effective. I'd push him forward one.
Lets hope Tierney is also in this month and we start addressing the issues we have in the team and we kick on to have a very good and successful 2nd half of the season.
    Hail Hail

1:00:30 Taylor cutting inside is what created our opening goal so it's not as if he's just doing it for no benefit. That is also how he managed to set up Reo Hatate for the only goal at Pittodrie recently.
It really is getting a bit F-ing tedious that every time we drop points it always circles around to being Greg Taylor's fault in some form or other

Taylor played one of his best games in a while for the team. Brendan’s subs completely baffled me last last night. We had stumbled upon a new shape, take Idah off, put Kenny (European level pace) on and push their defence back (makes the press more difficult due to the gap). Engles for Bernando or McGregor and Kuhn for Yang and we kick on and go for the win.

John's point about the midfield bang on for me -compressed triangles trying to flick and trick their way out and the better quality of player in the press against us -the result is predictable -that is on.the manager for stubborness in the face of a failing tactic -and after Ibrox that' what was frankly offensive not just on a football level -an insult to the intelligence of fans paying a lot of money to support their team

Agree with John. I was at the game last night and thought it was a complete copy of the game at ibrox. We were bullied all over the park in that second half and we couldn’t match the energy of Dundee. Two games in such a short space of time like that is a real concern. If we are not on it for the upcoming CL games we could take another hiding.

Dundee have proved in the past week they can give Rangers and Celtic both physicality and mentality a game of football without having overpriced players. Ange did so well and then when he left brought back Rodger’s, and let’s be honest he’s not got any competition due to the state of affairs at Ibrox.

  • @brownwarrior6867
    @brownwarrior6867 День назад +2

The issue with Callum McGregor has never been Callum McGregor but rather what the current Manager is expecting or wanting him to do.
Tactically we have become overly obsessed with the Inverted Fullback role and this has resulted in Calmac being reduced to nothing more than a 1-2 option for the back 4.
He’s gone from being the tempo setter and link between defence and attack to a more defensive, passive, sitting No6.
A No6 incidentally who doesn’t and never has had a hard tackling ,defensive aspect to his game.
He’s gone from a deep lying playmaker who’s main game has revolved around movement ,finding space and shifting it forward with intent ,to this static ,man marked one two option.
I believe the main reason for this is so Taylor primarily can get up the park causing teams to panic as the extra man becomes ball carrier.
That’s fine if yer facing a 3 man Midfield and McGregors pulling one of them out of position but against sides who not only overload the MF (see Rangers and Dortmund) but also stick a man marker on him he’s out the game tactically.
Personally I’d like to see a shift back to a double pivot or even a proper No6 in behind him clearing the danger.
He’s proven with his goals this Season that if the shackles are off McGregor still creates problems for opposing teams.
This became apparent last Season for the first 6 months McGregors effectiveness (along with Kyogos ) was hampered big time .
This isn’t a pop at Taylor btw because last night he was very effective in that role but rather its affecting things elsewhere and in my option what we are achieving is at a bigger cost to what we are losing in MF.
21:40 Go watch the highlights between Forrest and Liverpool from last night and watch Van Dijk on the Forrest goal.
More importantly watch Van Dijk and what he does with the striker Woods in behind him.

Question to John, do we continue playing with two wingers or change things and include a midfielder to stabilise that area? Dropping Kuhn or Maeda would of course create a different set of problems. Another issue may be a horrific amount of games in January are taking their toll.

    • @johnhughes3159
      @johnhughes3159 День назад +1

I would be inclined to go a variation of 3/5/2 in Europe & against the Huns. Width doesn’t necessarily have to come from wingers. For instance, Yang didn’t give us any balls from wide last night. We don’t seem able to impose our game in this system against teams that know our weaknesses. Therefore we have to compensate.

I don't think we are out of the woods just yet & will it be Kilmarnock or Young Boys, take your pick if you want a treble or knockout stages of the CL but can guarantee that we won't win both of those games. The league is done but won't suprise me if we don't drop 4/6 points before they do & will be talk of a "title race" again, mostly from the media and that lot before the game in march seals it for the worrying fans to go 10+ points clear again with like 8 games to go

!00% John the players are not doing themselves any favours in regards to being sharp, ruthless or clinical and are showing they can't be rested in some of the SPFL games. They are fizzling out in some games and agree they should be taken some of the SPFL games to get sharp, ruthless and clinical in the first half of games. It's worrying at times as we seem toothless in some games and yes it's a cold night up in Dundee. But were is the professionalism and the players mindset for getting ready for the Champions League competition. Our pro's should be using some SPFL games to show how clinical and ruthless they are and proving they are match ready to compete in the Champions League by firing on all cylinders.
Or are the players playing SPFL games with the Champions League games in mind but in a self-preservation way?
It seems players might be playing worried that they might get injured and miss out on the Champions League matches and are playing too cautiously. When they should actually be worried that they are not preforming within the SPFL jeopardising any potential game playing time in Champions League games due to not being sharp, ruthless, aggressive or clinical in the SPFL. If the players think they merit a start in the coming Champions League ties due to playing well recently in the SPFL. They need to think again?
And if they are concerned about getting knocks before the Champions League games? Well they should put a sharp, ruthless, aggressive and clinical first half performances killing teams off by half-time. Now the manager can comfortably rest the player by rewarding him, by resting him for the second half. Reducing and limiting fears of getting injured or any knocks before Champions League games. As the manager can now rest the player by replacing him with a sub for the second half. But the players need to earn that right by putting teams to the sword by halftime. That's called a well earned reward!
But naw they are playing with fear of injury and have not killed teams off by halftime meaning instead of playing 45 minutes they need to play the whole 90 minutes. Which means they are putting themselves at higher risk of injury. Yeah where is the logic in the thinking if players are playing with injury fears. Because that's the only explanation I can think of as to why we have dropped 7 points in recent games. Is it a fear of missing out on Champions League games if so well players need to visit the head shrink asap. HH

The only fixtures that any new signing can play in (if signed now) would be home to Kilmarnock or Home to Dundee.
So I don't really agree with your headline that we need the new signings in now.
We do need reinforcements but we don't (or at least we shouldn't!) need them in order to beat Kilmarnock & Dundee at CP.
So I think this is just a bit of a kneekerk, panic reaction to two points dropped last night. If new signings were eligible straight away for the two remaining CL fixtures then it'd be a different story but that isn't the situation we are faced with.
So what difference does it really make whichever date in January we make any new signings? The important thing is to get the right guys in and if that takes until 31st January then so be it.
I mean it's not as if things are tight in the league either so the only real pivotal game in January (that any new signings can affect) is this Saturday at home to Kilmarnock. So why all the tabloid style hyperbole in the show title?

Was really annoyed with Adam Idah last night with that chance he passed up. Anyone can miss a chance (as we saw with Bernardo) from time to time, so that's not what irked me, it's the fact that he just wasn't really busting a gut to be on the end of what was a brilliant sweeping move and would've been a wonderful team goal. Idah just didn't seem all that interested in scoring there.
I want players bursting a gut when they're on the pitch which brings me to No2 - Austin Trusty! Again I can handle misplaced passes because that's part of the game and everyone gives the ball away now and again.... But see all this rolling around as if you've been shot just because someone bumped in to you and all that, It gives me the Boak!
That's why I've been defending Yang so much recently because he at least tries! Give me a squad full of Yang's ahead of big Jessies like Trusty any day of the week.
There have been plenty of Celtic players over the years who just weren't good enough but who are remembered fondly and there are, sadly, a fair few others who were absolute imposters who went missing any time things got even slightly difficult.
As I said, It's not the mistakes that annoy me, it's the complete lack of effort or "character" (or whatever you want to call it) that annoys me

We all know Yang isn’t a first pick and still has a fair bit of development and as you say try’s his heart out and has also been a bit unlucky with chances, we seen at the weekend that him and Valle on that side together were brilliant and the only thing that was missing from Yang’s game was an assist (Kenny stole from him) or a goal (Kyogo nipped in just in front of him and James Brown stole from him) but some stats don’t come up on spreadsheets. Rodgers seems an unswerving disciple of what I call the total athleticization of football and by that I don't mean fitness but what you can.see is that when there is a drop off in pace we can't compensate -how skillful are we in reality -Kuhn is but it very pace based -Hatate is but it so negated by inconsistency -Bernardo has flashes -Maeda capable of real maverick moments -wonder stuff but I always feel.Rodgers tolerates more than encourages it because he loves his work rate..Yes a diffferent era but Martin O'Neill's Celtic had a lot of skill -Larsson, Petrov, Petta, Mal9ney, Moravcik, Agathe had wizardry i dont think we have presently -Matt O'Riley and Jota had flare..I just think when this rigid, athletic centric football breaks down we run into real problems and our defenders in O'Neills era were defenders first -that time was way more pragmatic.and adaptable than Rodgers' Celtic -I think athleticism is too often.seen as skill -Luis Palma is a skillful footballer but has no future at Celtic for which he is solely blamed but i can imagine he's well aware Rodgers doesn't appreciate his qualities and that must effect confidence...I think of all the form issues Calmac's is the most pivotal.because he's being swamped and hustled as a tactic and it createa fractures in the midfield and a defence drilled to play football but when there's no space to do it we het dragged about and outmuscled. We have quality enough to compensate for most part domestically but i can see another Dortmund coming in Europe -we speak about progress made in europe but we ŵere all agreed we'd a very kind draw. Rodgers for me is a system addict

The league is 100% done & dusted.
If rangers win all of their remaining league games (which wont happen) they can finish on 92pts.
      Celtic are currently on 60pts
So assuming we lose both of the remaining derbies, we would require 32pts (at most) from 14 games vs all of the other teams.
      10 Wins, 2 Draws 2 Losses
Just One draw in either of the derby games would drop that to 29pts required from 14 non-derby games - 9 wins 2 draws 3 Losses
And of course ALL OF THIS pre-supposes that rangers win every other game they play. It is not happening. The league is finished beyond any reasonable doubt

Brendan doesnt have players good enough for his passing poccession game, Wang can't beat a man and put a cross over he just passes backwards

League not won, not with that team. Dundee reserves ! Powder Puff team Rangers tactics again successful, very worrying.

We can afford to loose four games and draw another and stil win the league. However, if Aberdeen do their usual drop the pants at Ibrox today, that obviously changes.

@ I’m old enough to have seen teams lose from bigger points advantage, especially since Brendan’s one way A plan seems to have been sussed.

Two missed chances by Bernardo and Idah plus a crazy own goal cost us two points. It wont happen often this term.

Never seen a celtic side that doesn't want to cross the ball, even most of their corners are short, their football is now boring and predictable

Most corners are put into the 6 yard box by Engels and Barnardo

I genuinely do not know what game some people are watching at times.
      McCowan scored from a cross
Yang's goal came from a cross
Idah missed a sitter from a cross
Bernardo hit the bar from a cross
Most of our corners were crossed in to the box

We've just lost our competitive edge, you see this in every league when a team is so far ahead or actually won the title, there is always drop off, it's a normal human reaction after all the hard work and effort, they don't mean it, in any sport you have to be pushed all the way in order to produce your best form and we've had no real competition for a while now, and we're just not as sharp as we should be.
