Good show as always, bhoys. Enjoyed the chat.
As Celtic supporters, we of course all want our players to do well and succeed. However, no player or manager is above criticism.
In re Idah, he has done it for us and in big games, and I believe he will again. Like all strikers, he will miss chances and go through difficult spells, but effort, hard work, and conviction are the least you expect. It's been very disappointing that those qualities have been clearly lacking in his play in the last few games. In the last 2 games in particular, I've seen him not challenge the opposition centre halves for headers and not fully commit to crosses.. which is unacceptable whether you're a £9m signing or have come through the youth academy. If you're not playing well, hard work and effort get you through, and eventually, the goals will come. We've seen it with so many Celtic strikers over the years.
I expect he will be told to up his game big time, but I think Johnny Kenny also deserves a chance to show what he can do, which should also motivate Idah to raise his game.
I agree there is a weakness and softness in our play and must be addressed. The return of Tierney will, of course, give us more physicality and dynamism on the left side of our defence. Let's hope he comes in this month.
I also think we need a real robust, physical, and defensive midfielder ( No.6) who is adept at breaking up play, winning balls, and starting attacks.
I disagree with JP, I don't think Mcgregor is that player. Calmac is such an intelligent and gifted footballer that he can play anywhere in midfield, and especially in domestic home games when teams sit back, he dictates play.
However, in tough away games, and in europe, he isn't strong enough.. and we suffer. I'd play him further forward, where he can be more influential, create chances, and, as we know, is also a goal threat.
The wings are really needing strengthened. For me, Yang and Palma are nowhere near the level required and have to be moved on. Of course, they are part of that horrendous summer 2023 transfer window.. which also included Nawrocki, Lagerbielke, Holm, Tillio and Kwon. Over £17m spent on players who have not been contributing anything..totally unacceptable.
That level of recruitment ineptitude can not be repeated.
Hopefully, Brendan can address the issues in the wide areas this month. A top quality winger who can play both sides should be a priority, and I'd also sign Armstrong from Kilmarnock as back up to Kuhn. He has proved for a few seasons now, including against us, he can be very effective in the SPFL, and i think he could do a job for us, especially domestically.
Also, we can not sell our "wee magic man" Kyogo..
He is still our best striker and has shown in the last few games what an intelligent and great player he is, even from deeper or wider areas.. we have to work harder at finding him more, and I've no doubt he'll score more goals.
There has been lots of positivity, of course, and we've been very consistent for most of this season so far, but have shown some glaring weaknesses recently. I feel that some quality reinforments this month can kick us on and help us finish the campaign strongly, with a few more additions to the trophy room in Paradise.
    Hail Hail 🍀💚

Great discussion today as usual. I have to say I feel having one guest is always a better format for these videos. 38:15 JP the game you can’t think off is the 7-1 vs Dundee, Yang was brilliant that game, set up Daniel Kelly for his goal and would have been MOTM if it wasn’t for O’Riley getting 2 assists and a goal but Yang was the best player on the park that day. He had also been excellent in the game before it against Motherwell where he assisted Palma and he was doing good in the hearts game until he got sent off, then things went downhill from there.

As he is taking macowans place and game time .
    Macowan is more consistant
    And the midfield is not
Settled hence the midfield is chopping and changing

JP always makes good points. But before the game the other night for some reason, I ended up on an article from the night we played Livi at home under Gavin Strachan. We had went to Dubai and had most of the squad with Covid and isolating. Read the report from that…..Jesus!! 20 points behind the Huns, made me sick thinking about it haha
As an aside, Dundee were actually very good the other night. And not in a ‘aw the wee team done themselves pride. They had these big, capable footballers and well organised athletes. That’s what I was impressed by. They weren’t just big blooters. They gave no quarter
But the fact again and I will say this as I did after tannadice. Systems and tactics can be spoke about all day and night
We drew v DU cos Kyogo missed a sitter
We drew v Dundee because we missed utter guilt edged chances from Idah then Bernardo. That game should have been done in first half. So systems take us only so far and it’s a ‘if my auntie had bawz etc’
But how do we legislate for missing those sort of match winning chances? So yes we have failings but let’s not fuck about here, the game was ours to take and those chances like tannadice cost us and that’s the long and short of it. Score those the rest is irrelevant

8:00 Scoring penalties is not "padding your record". That's a daft thing to say.
Celtic (by far) spend way more time in the opposition penalty box than any other team in the league. It stands to reason that we will get a fair few penalties over the course of 38 league games. So having a guy who can convert them on a regular basis, is not something to dismiss lightly.
Engels has scored 7/7 from the spot (if we include the penalty shootout) which is very good going. Anything above an 80% conversion rate, long term, is very good.
Now, I do agree that just trotting out Engels "goals per minutes played" stats, without providing the context that he's the penalty taker, is also stupid.
But having a reliable penalty taker is a very good thing for any team to have. Anyone saying "Och he only scores penalties..." is missing the point.

It’s just a very very poor depiction of what actually happened. Yang isn’t a defender, he’s a forward and he defended like a typical forward, he got outdone, bottle doesn’t come into it.

Still seen nothing much from him (beyond flashes of real potential), that suggest he’s been anywhere near the ‘outstanding’ label that many have placed on him lately. Truly baffling! I guess said hyperbole mostly comes from those that are desperate to deflect away from the distinct possibility of yet another Rodgers-signed dud! (There have been TEN thus far, not including Trusty).
He’s had about 6 good games in 28 appearances, which is hardly impressive.
Those talking up his 3 UCL assists in 6 games, merely demonstrates just how abysmal our European record(s) are. Aside from Leipzig - Can we really put claim to an assist in a 7-1 humiliation? and another against the second worst team in the competition? It’s clutching at straws!
But, we ultimately knew what we were getting going by his poor Ausburg stats across most fronts: Number of passes, Passing Accuracy, Chances Created, Interceptions & tackles, Distance covered. 9 Assists and 4 Goals in two seasons is very poor, regardless of the age-old ‘he’s developing’ excuse. There’s a very fine reason why we signed him and no other club on our level or higher did.
All that said, he is being asked to fulfill a (box-to-box) role which is to a large extent, nullifying the bhoy’s real strengths as a creative playmaker. This is a large part of the on-going midfield imbalance, created by Rodgers, who evidently doesn't have a clue how to solve it - hence the constant illogical rotations.

@DuncanMills-r2f Firstly, Duncan, I don't think anyone has ever even remotely compared him to Matty, never mind bloody Lubo! Where did you get that from?
In what world is Engels similar to Rodri?? They are worlds apart! Rodri is a single-pivot 6, Engels is a 'natural' advanced playmaker geared towards the creative/playmaker side of the axis, and not the box-to-box/workhorse/physical side. In this respect, Rodgers is playing him out of position which is further adding to his poor performances. The bhoy could'nae tackle a fish supper ffs! I've even heard others say he's a natural 6 - Wit?!? We don't have one single natural 6/pivot/holding midfielder in the squad, not one! Iwata was the only one we had and the clueless 5 foot one sold him for mere peanuts to B'ham!
Engels evidently doesn’t understand what is being asked of him, let alone the ability (inexperience rather than his ‘actual’ technical ability/game intelligence) to carry it out effectively. He can’t hold the shape on the right-hand side or deep central positions because he intuitively wants roam in to his natural position. He has no physicality, can’t regain possession higher up the pitch in pressing phases, and can’t backtrack to defend deeper when the team are struggling for numbers at the back. His positional discipline very poor, but it’s ultimately all on Rodgers.

But how much of a worry, when surrounded by silverware?
Dips in our form are not an anomaly but instead on a peak and trough cycle.
Why do people pick apart on Engels? Because we live in a self publishing world feeding on content and response to that content. That’s why.
Self-publishing demands that you consistently publish. And there isn’t enough material to cover so you end up publishing sh*te.
Part of Engels problem is fan thoughtlessness. They just see that he hasn’t replaced oreilly and that’s all they need to kick off.
He will never be oreilly and he will never produce his numbers.
In some ways, but not all ways, discourse was much better and much more grown-up & thoughtful when we didn’t have 100 means to immediately publish every garbage thought we have. Alas, we’re here now. In this trash.
And I do see the irony in my comment here. Except, I’ve considered it.

No one is picking the Bhoy apart ffs, the discernment that suggests he’s offered the bare minimum thus far, comes with the territory of being the most expensive signing in our history - as it does for Adam Idah too, who is the second most expensive signing.
Show me another set of supporters who wouldn’t formulate an opinion (good or bad) on their club’s record signing after 28 appearances? There isn’t one in existence, so Celtic supporters are absolutely not doing anything out of the ordinary. The opinion many of us have of him currently is absolutely not definitive, but he has to be doing a lot more playing for the richest club in the land by a country mile, amongst a squad value of £130+ million, in one of the worst and least competitive leagues in world football.
