Oscar may be the greatest musician ever. He also has great taste, swings so hard and plays with pure joy. God bless this man and his legacy.

For me the most impressive thing about Oscar was not his crazy technique, but his light touch, and rhythmic sensibility

No doubt. Art Tatum, Willie the Lion, Oscar Peterson, and then Monk. that is the Mt. Rushmore.

Oscar... the greatest set of hands to grace the keys. His trio was incredible. Saw him in the 80s and it was unbelievably exhausting.

He was thought how to play piano by his sister Daisy. She also was an incredible pianist, but didn’t enjoy performing in public. She also thought piano to another great jazzman from Montreal, Oliver Jones. Daisy’s adoptive son is one of my neighbour.

Last weekend the BBC celebrated 60 years of their BBC2 channel by playing what they considered to be the most iconic live music performances of that period. Right up there was Oscar playing with Ella Fitzgerald. Goose bump time! Great choice Dave, what a musician Oscar was!

I have a live recording of Peterson, I think a Paris outdoor concert, anyway....you can hear him humming and talking to himself under his breath as he plays. It is really cool! My favorite quote about Peterson by jazz writer, Samuel Chell, from a review of a box set: "After a Tatum performance, the listener is left asking the question: "How did he do that?"; after a levitating trip on the Peterson Express the more likely response is, simply: "Did he really do that?" (Art Tatum is from the same time period of swing jazz pianists.)

  • @TZ61

Yes. Mr. Peterson clearly knew his way around his instrument, lol. So good and it makes me think of some more of the greats whom I love; going back to Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller and moving up to Professor Longhair and James Booker, a couple crazy cats from down around the bayou, just to barely scratch the surface. And as Nick said, the guitar player put in mind of Django Reinhardt. Love these live performances, thanks.

I remember the UK television show 'Oscar Peterson Invites...' from 1977. During one episode he explained how to improvise more effectively, by building up to moments of tension and resolving them in a way that created the seeds of future conflict - similar to the kind of advice young writers of creative fiction are given. If I had to pick a pianist, living or dead, to play for my life, I can't think of anyone I'd put in front of him.

I went to school with a jazz musician, composer, lawyer named Phil Dwyer. Not my kind of music but he gets acclaim. Even got an Order of Canada. Sax is his main instrument but he started on piano. They never wanted me in the jazz band at school because I played the accordion! 😂

There is an unusual duo album by Oscar and Joe Pass where they play tunes from "Porgy and Bess". It is odd because Oscar plays a clavichord -- a smaller and quieter instrument than the piano with less of a dynamic range. Joe plays a classical guitar.

Outstanding - yes it was the Oscar show - pity because Barney Kessel is an absolute killer, I’ve had his guitar method book for over 40 years and still refer to it. You’ve heard him without knowing it on Elvis Presley and Beach Boys recordings. Nils - usually simplified as NHOP - is a total space-age monster bassist - completely out of the reach of 95% of bassists. RIP all three past masters.

HEY gUYS. Enjoyed ur reaction 😁😁👍👍 This dude def has some chops...wow. Have you guys heard much of pianist songwriter Elton john?? many great piano songs/hits but.........He also had a few tunes that maybe ur not aware of where the guitar was the main feature instrument wise. Eltons guitarist 🎸🎸used a ' Leslie speaker ' that is a combined amplifier & loudspeaker that projects the signal from an electric or electronic instrument & modifies the sound by rotating a baffle chamber ("drum") in front of the loudspeakers. It's a super cool sound he gets as heard in one of Eltons hits ' All the girls love Alice ' and ofc Eltons lyrics way bak in 73 singing about girls loving on girls. 😍😍❤❤ have a great day guys & happy i found ur channel😁😁👍👍

You should take a quick moment ( u dont have to react to it ) but i want you to hear that Leslie speaker sound that was used in the late 60s early 70s & i see they still sell them ( expensive lil sukers too) plus it's a total bad ass tune.
