  • Over the course of the 20th century, Black farmers lost nearly 90% of their farmland and the number of Black farmers dropped from one in seven U.S. farmers to one in 72 today.
    One factor contributing to Black land loss is land held as heirs’ property, or property passed down through generations without a will, with major consequences for Black farmers’ ability to invest in and maintain their land.
