I work at a retail store in the US and I've noticed that Mexican workers (including myself) are treated with less respect than the Americans/Africans (store is diversed but mainly consists of: Mexicans, Americans and Africans) but at the end of the day we (Mexicans) are the ones getting that job done. Staying longer, working harder, and sometimes even skipping breaks to get the job done.
Like my mom once told me: forget about the other workers, you go and do your job and things will work out.
When we have a good day of work we go home smiling and proud of our work for the day.
Sometimes I'm very shocked at how unappreciated we are at points because we are very loyal workers. I've only been working there 2 1/2 years but otherothers have 10+ years working for this store

  • @VIKOLINADAN

The Mexican worker is a machine, and we're educated in trades at a very early age. A twelve year old takes electric shop, and has the core knowledge to install the electrical system of a house, knows how a radio works internally - basic knowledge. Some other shops teach kids machine shop, building design and drafting, beauty care, computer repair etc. All kids in Mexico go thru a 3 year education process in a specific trade. Next, at the high school level we have to decide what specific subject area to study, by age 16 kids are being educated in meteorology, engineering, biology, chemistry, law, according to their specific interest. Therefore, even though many people in Mexico only have the Junior High or High School education equivalency, they'd been trained to join the labor force at a young age. Unfortunately, many of those kids never go to a university to expand this knowledge, and are force to join the labor force. The down side is that salaries are extremely low in Mexico, sometimes makes more financial sense for a math teacher to migrate to the US as a farm worker and exponentially multiply his earnings.

    • @VIKOLINADAN
      @VIKOLINADAN 7 лет назад +3

Rick Smith Are you also upset there is no milkman jobs, what about telegraph operator, travel agents, wedding photographers, etc? In the past, many people used to make a good living doing the jobs I just mentioned and many others - they're replaced by innovation, technology and capitalism.
After WWII the US became an industrial manufacturing country - there was no competition from Europe, Latin America or Asia, that lasted a good sixty years, now the economy has shifted to customer service, finance, health care services and technology. We can blame Mexicans and Indians all we want, but that is not reality. Go to college, and take a few Economic Classes, you'll understand this topic much better.
Today, commercial truck drivers make a good living, some even make 100k a year, guess what? This type of job will go away in the near 50 years due to self driving cars, it is only a matter of time companies will find a commercial application for them.
I have a Master's degree in languages, logic dictates I should have the most amazing job - and I don't. Computer software have replaced teachers, a person can self taught any language - am I going to be upset? Of course not, I have to innovate and learn a new set of skills.
A few things have to change in our economic system. We have to reduce the working hours to possibly three days a week, that way more people can be employed. Also, people are living much longer 80 or 90 years, taking care of so many old people who are not contributing is depleting our economic resources, retirement should be delayed at minimum ten more years.
Lastly, the American people have to keep their living expectations in check. Back in the 50s a family had only one car, today each member of a family has one. People change cell phones at least once every two years, computers every three years, there are hundreds of physical jobs such as working in the agricultural fields, milking cows, butchers, lawn mowing, but nobody wants to do those jobs - we're too f..n spoil. Also, it depends where you live, if you live in SF making 3,000 dollars a month you're screwed, but the same amount of many goes a long way somewhere else.

no, Mexico is NOT wining the car manufacturing war, corporations are the ones who win. Corporations moving to Mexico result in depressed wages for the Mexican worker. The usual response is "we pay competitive wages" but the the truth is that this is not so, as they know that the same wage in their country is far higher.
The representative from Nuevo Leon is full of it, of course Mexico is a source of cheap labor, otherwise these companies would not be here!
Sadly due to corruption, there is no hope for the Mexican worker to improve in this situation.

It actually is not the same, just did a quick calculation and if in my country, someone was to earn at least $6000 per year, you could take your 2 kids to private schools with great education and afford to own a home. At $7200 you have a town home, a country home and two cars in the compound. So the cost of living in the U.S and Canada is high. If you paid people a U.S cops salary of about $30-35000 in any country in Africa, people would own multiple homes, at least 5 high end cars if you wanted, like Range Rovers and Landcruisers, Mercedes...Avocados are cheap here and come in at 20cents in dollars, I heard of the cost of an avocado in the U.S and Australia I almost fainted hehehehe.

Anyone can manufacture a car due to improvements in technology. The Canadians have been too complacent to begin with. Anyone can assemble a car nowadays. Give a worker a month or two, he or she will learn to assemble a car within that period. The technology is standardised and simple to mimic. Also, Canada does not have any domestic brand.Even if we have one, the company will ditch Canada for Mexico in a heart beat because of overpriced and overrated unions. Robots manufacture cars. If you want to see that, I will send you a video of Hyundai/Kia factory in Ulsan, South Korea. Why are we bitching? At one point, we stole our stolen jobs from our American counterparts. No, it's based on out of control union contracts, over regulation, and over taxation, all democrat ideologies. If the US could break free of that BS, we could be more competitive. In fact, automation will make the cheap foreign labor obsolete in the future, the US needs to focus on the education of STEM students to keep our first world status. The US school system mandates propping up all the under achievers with the lion's share of the school funding pie, with no results, while we put little money into our bright and competent students. Government needs to get out of the way for capitalism to work as it should. Our nation depends on it.

    * Planned Obsolesence to increase sales -the industry uses certain (tested !) parts that will make the device fail reliiable ! after warranty time and will prohibit the repair of the product. They walk a fine line, but the increasing monopolies (large manufacturers merging) makes the scam easier. There are no medium sized competitors left who would compete the low quality high sales strategy of the big players with slightly higher prices but GOOD QUALITY in the medium segment. (The few that go against the trend, occupy the high end or "boutique" segment and have usually rather high prices for all the bells and whistles and to compensate for relatively small sales volumes). The solid middle got lost.
As a rule of thumb: the cheaper the product, the more Throw-Away product design. (So the standards for cars are higher, also because of security requirements. Washing machines tend to fail after 5 - 6 years and are often too cheap to warrant a repair. Small devices like hair dryers, mixers, coffee makers, CD players - forget it.
There is of course ALSO cutting corners to save costs resulting in shoddy quality. But PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE means:
Intentionally using parts that WILL reliably fail. Just not too early. And often it would cost hardly more to use a better part (a fraction of a USD !), or design it in a way that the device CAN be repaired at low costs. But they intentionally design / plan it otherwise so that customers are forced to buy new. Which is the only way to sell more and more. ***
They can't be too obvious about it, but for persons with technical expertise it has become quite obvious. France passed a law regarding it. It is highly problematic. Not only miss out consumers of the small advantages of losing jobs to countries with lower wages, it is a huge drain on the environment, energy use, pollution - that would even be true if the goods were manufactured under high standards. There is always some pressure put on the natural resources. We should aim to not have too many physical goods - and they should be of good quality and durable).
*** On the short term perspective, Big Biz could sell more devices (in the more durable quality like they used to be) if workers in the devoloping countries would not be exploited - those workes would like to increase their standard of living - they just can't - they are not paid enough.
And considering the future of the planet, our use of dwindling resources and energy, Global Warming ! - corporations will have to be FORCED to scaling down their output in PHYSICAL GOODS. Enough products to satisfy our needs, those in good quality and produced under high standards. A reduced work time - the 40 hour week (with a LIVING WAGE !) was introduced in the 1940 and 1950s - we have massively! improved productivity with automation, PCs, ....so WHY WOULD WE STILL WORK at least 40 hours to make a living ? And we would need to give each other meaningful work, income, and contracts by using each other's services. So instead of consuming goods, we would consume more experiences (dining out, going to styling workshops to work with the existing wardrobe, paying seamstresses, attending classes, going on holidays).
We cannot leave out future in the hands of entities whose sole purpose is to make as much profit as they possible can (and that is even written into law - the shareholders can legally hold a CEO accountable). Well the word for the ruling principle is GREED. And they naturally have an extremely narrow perspective.
So naturally they cannot watch out for the well-being of all - and must be reigned in.

+Jorge Arellano Data shows, Mexico is the twelfth economic power in the world, Italy is the 13th and the UK is the 11th. Again, based on the hard data, Mexico is expected to surpass the UK in the immediate future. In the Global economy, Europe is in an economic recession, China's economy is doing horribly. The US exports will reduce dramatically if those to markets keep shrinking, so it is expected Mexico could become the 10th or 9th largest economy by the year 2020. Additionally, Mexico and the US have the largest trade in the world, the US sales more products to Mexico than all Europe and Asia combined. Friend, Mexico is a major economic player in the world, here is the but. We need to start owning our own shit, I'm talking about intellectual property, we know how to make computers, but we don't own the rights. We make amazing trucks, but we don't own the rights, we need to create our own facebook and sell it to the world. "Estamos en vías de desarrollo" es una excusa ochentera, México ya no está' en vías de desarrollo, somos una economía emergente que es muy diferente. Por último tenemos que tener mejor infraestructura en provincia, como carreteras, electricidad e internet - que no son cosas muy difíciles de obtener. "No nacimos donde no hay que comer, no hay que preguntarnos como le vamos hacer, si nos pintan como unos guevones, no lo somos y viva México cabrones." Salaries are going up in Mexico, so that gap with Canada and the US is getting smaller as time goes on, but still Mexico buys everything from food to hi-tech from the US and Canada, you don't get that with China, China's wages are also going up but they still block companies like Google and Facebook and Bombardier from entering their market. Not to mention that profits still go to American and Canadian shareholders and that this same companies need low wages for their products to remain price competitive with chinese companies.

I am curious how the unions were reacting to cost cutting and efficiency projects in the years up to the closing of their plants.
I worked at a unionized plant in eastern Ontario every attempt at increasing productivity was shot down and fought tooth and nail by the union. Companies like private citizens are always looking for value for money, and they were not getting it in Canada, UK, or US, so they went looking and now they have a low paid work force that is motivated and embraces efficiency projects. We did it to our selves. good for Mexico.

Most people who aren't business owners, accountants, and a few others . . . don't understand what it takes to provide a job or operate a business. It's certainly obvious that too many lawmakers don't really understand it when they pile regulation upon regulation and push for higher and higher minimum wages . . . with regard for market conditions.

It's because companies like GM and Chrysler went through bankruptcies the only way they can sustain themselves is by relocating to a country with a lower operation costs to pay off their debts... these companies borrowed a lot of money from the banks and governments to stay afloat... the reality is that the workforce has to be able to transition to other jobs

It's all about corporate greed. The cost of living is less in Mexico so they can afford to work for less, but the companies still sell the product for the same inflated prices.

I am a citizen of both Mexico and Canada and have lived in all of Northamerica, including the US. I can see the conflict of the situation but it is not the workers fault in either country, it's the socioeconomic system that creates the contradiction. Canada's answer to this labor competition will be to develop robots to produce 24 hours a day to lower costs, but the problem is the capitalist system gives the profit to the robots owners while the former workers are cut out of the picture. IT'S IN HOW THE PROFITS ARE DIVIDED WHERE THE SOLUTION WILL BE FOUND. Off work laborers have no purchasing power, therefore no consumption. Who will the robot factories will be selling to? That is the question and why the economic system has to change.
Statistics show China's huge manufacturing base grew from low wages, and yet today China is the largest investor in automation and robotics because they see where the future is going. Canada has to think deep in moving on from the old economic system and do what China is doing.

This is why protective tariffs are so important to a country’s economy. Globalist will argue that it makes a industry more competitive and lowers prices to consumers. Rarely this is true with no lowering of price and with most of the additional revenues going to corporate investors. Meanwhile with the loss of jobs people and local communities are destroyed.

The average mexican worker earns 7.8 dollars for a day's work and they work faster, sometimes smarter, how do you beat that ?

    • @davem4564
      @davem4564 7 лет назад +3

With globalization, there are always cheaper labor forces. When companies get tired of paying Mexicans $7.80 a day, they will go to Honduras and pay some workers $4 a day. Then they'll move to China or Malaysia or Nicaragua and pay the workers $2 a day. It's a race to the bottom.

Michael Heider Why this hate against unions in the US? In Sweden almost all workers across all sectors of the economy is members of a union and our factories are making records meanwhile paying our workers a very good pay. Volvo Trucks for exemple which I used to work for is one of the largest truck manufacturers, here in gothenburg a factory worker is one of the most sought after jobs.
Same in germany a automaker powerhouse, unions are very strong there as well.
