- 3 hours worth of work condensed into 6 minutes!
For those that don't know, this is the car that Richard Petty crashed during the 1991 Banquet Frozen Foods 300 at Sonoma. It was previously restored elsewhere and then purchased by a customer that brought it to us! There are several issues with the previous restoration. First being the paint scheme. Second being the spoiler and third, everything else!
We will restore this beauty to race day standards. Stay tuned as we bring you more content surrounding this build and others.

Nice to see that Petty's Garage is restoring this car to authenticity! The nose is the 1990 style, not 1991. The '88-'96 Grand Prix went through a few variations of nose in NASCAR, each one becoming more aerodynamic. I'd love to see replicas of the '96 25th Anniversary Car or John Andretti's winning car at Martinsville, if there's ever enough interest!
The paint scheme was slightly altered every year after that Grand Prix body style came out in '88, and that looks like the way the 43 car was painted in 1990. The wide red stripe going over the hood, roof and deck lid had the thinner white stripes separating it from the blue. If I remember right, the '91 paint scheme had dark blue stripes as well.
Oh, and it wouldn't have had the Busch decals on the fenders, either...
Petty never had any alcohol companies branding on his cars
You are 100% correct, this is a pre 1991 body as well.
I was wondering why they called it a '91 when the scheme is definately the '90 season. Looks like this car came from the winston cup museum and the owner of that was the one that built the show cars so it could be they changed some things when they got ahold of it.
Pontiac baby 👍
I think a show in the same vein as Pimp My Ride but focused on restoring vintage NASCAR cars would be awesome on cable
I was born in 86 so early 90s are my earliest memories of Nascar and I was a Petty fan! My dream would be to own a Petty raced car. I was at PIR in Arizona for his last race! I am such a fan that I purchased an autograph because I knew my chances of meeting him were not likely.
His last race was Atlanta. 1992 Hooters 500
PLEASE make a just the noise video of the car when it's done! No music nothing but the noise. Please !
Will do!
I was born april 11 1991, probably was a practice day for most of the nascar teams. Wondered who was on track while I was being born.
Nice job. And I like the 68 Chevelle in the background.
I remember walking through that shop in 1980 and meeting Richard. I was around 12, and Richard told my hands had nothing in them. He went over to some shelves and came back with all kinds of stuff handed them to me and said, "now your hands are full." Him and my father new each other. My father was also friends with Wade Thornburg, "Waddling Wade" very funny man.
I didn't think they ran production style block and heads back in 91. I figured everything would have been completely aftermarket and nothing from the production line would bolt up to those engine. The heads and exhaust ports looked just like any other small block chevy I've ever seen.
In 91 I was wrapping up the sprint car driving and building for other racers. and I was watching the 43
First memory of the 43 was a 64 that looked like the Plymouth in our driveway.
Awesome video, cant wait to see more!
I am sure if I was not off at a race track, I was watching the race this car competed in, which was was my first year of high school more than likely.
The damned music.
Something really weird is the B Pillar on this car doesn't match what it looked like when it was crashed in '91. It was a little bit more robust and the Pontiac logo was straight up and down. The NACA duct on the passenger side is completely different, as well. I wonder how much was changed and incorrectly restored on it.
Is this a joke?
What's the purpose of this, why not leave it alone?
So that it's still functional and driveable
The original car was destroyed in a wreck at Sonoma in 1991. The original restoration got several things incorrect, including the paint scheme and spoiler among other things. The owner also wants to be able to race it at track days throughout the year, so we are restoring it so that it is period correct and in race shape!
@@Pettys-garage oh. Thought it was a museum piece.
I can’t believe I just watched you tear this car down 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬 I believe my lifetime hero may have some issue with his clarity of the think cell. I’ve had petty blue blood since I was a lil crumb snatcher ! I collect everything petty ( massive ) die cast #43 and went to the old petty place when it was a race shop. This hurts to watch and I’m fricking pissed at the king right now
Thank you for watching and being a lifelong Petty fan!
We clarified this in the caption, but we'll clarify a few tidbits here. As a huge Petty fan, you probably recall the massive wreck the original car was in at Sonoma in 1991. The King said it was one of the hardest hits he'd ever had. At some point after the car got back from the track and what could be salvaged was taken off, it was partially restored as a show car and ended up in the Winston Cup Museum in Winston-Salem, NC. However, some of the parts used were not historically accurate. This was and still is a fairly common practice. If someone wants a show car and the car in question needs a nose because the original is pulverized, you go up into the attic, find the closest year nose you can for that make of car and roll on (in this case, a nose from 1989 was used).
The owner of this particular car wants it restored as accurately to the last day it raced in 1991. Thankfully, we have a staff of NASCAR veterans working in the same location a dynasty was built that can make that happen. You can't ask for much more than that. If this car wasn't restored as a show car the first time, it would have been sold for scrap or buried in the dirt.
Thank you again for your continued support of The King and the Petty family. Hopefully you can stop by Level Cross, NC soon and check out the Petty Museum! It's chock full of Petty history you'll be sure to enjoy.
Don't forget to subscribe to our channel and stay up to date with this build. We think you will appreciate the final, historically accurate product.
What's all the yellow paint where the rollbar padding has been scraped away? As wicked of a hit as that car looked like it took on TV (reporter said Richard's leg was broke) it's hard to believe anybody would try to fix it for the track again (but i'm no expert ,just a real RP fan).
Leftover glue
This is stunning, why is this car being restored? It is far more interesting to leave the car as found in 1991.
It was destroyed in a wreck in 1991 at Sonoma. One of the hardest hits The King ever had. It was restored once as a show car, but used parts not historically accurate. The owner of the car wants it restored as accurately to the day it raced.
Everybody always wants to know what's the formula for "Petty" blue? I want to know what the formula is to the dark blue Petty used on the chassis parts!
Ford Blue! When they switched to Ford the first time back in the day, the chassis bits were painted Ford Blue.
Looks like his 1990 car.
How often do they change the oil ??
Super cool to see if this was a street legal race car!!
Talk about having the best job in the world. !!! You get to work for a King !!!!!! ( I'd do it for free just as long as I can meet Mr petty )
Cool
Should leave as is but it’s over my head
The original was destroyed in a massive head on collision with the wall in 1991 at Sonoma. One of the hardest hits The King ever had. It was restored once as a show car, but used parts not historically accurate. The owner of the car wants it restored as accurately to the day it raced.
@petty's garage: music creds??
"Monkeys destroy history"
More accurate title
Then why watch??
Did you read description under video? It was restored previously, but incorrectly, so now they're making it as per original.
@@derekhobbs1102 thank you!
Richard Rawlings (Grease monkey garage) destroyed enough cars, but not this one. This race car was a Richard Petty car, 100% original for a race car is a false expectation.
Asheboro is my hometown, but I live in Grayson County VA now.
91 I was getting out of the Army for the second time.
I would love to meet him one more time, and tell him that story.
