Imagine how I feel right now given that I sold my 6950XT for a 7900XTX back in January, seeing my old GPU outperform my new one is kinda indescribable, is a new kind of disappointment that I've never felt before with hardware LOL, so depressing.. but anyways I really appreciate you making these videos, the more videos shedding light on these issues the better since it will push AMD to make it a priority, so poor saps like me with 7900XTXs who are VR players are not forgotten (we're a tiny minority so having a RUclipsr on our side that cares helps a ton)

Hey Maraksot, nice video as always. As someone who switched from Nvidia to AMD last year and who's been using VR since the DK2, let me add to your discoveries.
On AMD 6000 series (and probably everything with the more modern AMF encoder) you can also fix HEVC / H.265 in wired link by adding the key 'numSlices' and setting it 1 under the same registry path as HEVC, meaning:
    - reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "HEVC" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f
    - reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset" /v "numSlices" /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f
That basically sets the encoder to encode the whole frame in one slice instead of the default 5 for AMD (as you can see in your footage of the ODT, e.g. at 4:00).
Though if you want the best possible image quality, simply stay at AVC / H.264 and go bonkers with the bitrate ("BitrateMbps" under the same registry path). If you use USB 3 and a good cable and the connection test in the Oculus Software says you have 2.7 Gbps transmission (or other), just go a bit below that.
I'm currently at AVC / H.264, 2000 Mbps and 5 Sices as a sweet spot, though you can play around.
Also, instead of using shell commands, simply run "regedit" and navigate to the path HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Oculus\RemoteHeadset. You can adjust all the values there in the explorer style GUI. Though be careful to remember the original values and do not play around elsewhere as that's the registry editor of Windows.
That's basically also where the ODT adjusts the values, so you can see that whatever you put into "BitrateMbps" will actually also be shown in the ODT and the perfomance HUD for Oculus Link.
If you decide to play around with the DWORD keys in the registry, just remember to always switch the base from hexadecimal to decimal. You'll see, it's no rocket since.
Have fun and thank you for testing VR in your hands-on but still methodical approach.

Hi, nice video, I have a 7900xtx and I have found the only way to get crisp clear images in air link is to do the following:
Sign up to the beta of the oculus desktop software / or use the registry entry to force h.264 (HEVC=0)
Then in oculus debug tool set the following:
Video Codec to H.264 (if using beta version)
    Encode resolution: 4000
    Encode Dynamic Bitrate: Enabled
    Dynamic Bitrate Max: 200
Dynamic Bitrate Offset: somewhere between 50 to 200 depending on your setup
    What this does:
the key here is that higher encode resolution. For whatever reason the oculus software is dramatically compressing the picture you see. That change + the two bitrate settings gives you a cabled like experience with the caveat that your router must have sufficient bandwidth for it.
H.265 also produces the edge warping thing you described, which is a shame. My theory is that the oculus software is assuming the worst case scenario because the 7000 series cards are still not officially supported. You can see this when you compare the enc resolution in your quest performance overlay actually from your video, the 7900xtx was 2000by something and the 6700xt was 2880 by something. However with the settings above I have a nearly perfect image that is actually, to my eyes clearer than Virtual Desktop.
Keep up the great work on your video's!

Great video with some good tips. Those .sqlite files are actually a database (probably for some settings). At some point in the process an incorrect/bugged/corrupted setting might get set to one of the entries in the database. Anyone familiar with sqlite may be able to compare the before and after files to isolate what changed in the database. Then rather than having to copy the files over and over again (and stopping the Oculus services), it should be possible to just have a quick shortcut that changes the entries in the database back to their "Fixed" values. Could even have a small program that always runs that does this periodically, fixing the mistake as soon as the Oculus software makes it. Annoying of course, but if the official fix isn't coming anytime soon (sounds like Oculus had a lot of let go recently so they might be a bit short on manpower) this might be an acceptable work around that isn't as laborious.

6:04 I have the Radeon RX 5700 XT (MSI-branded), and it looks like mine defaulted to using H265 by default, per the Oculus Debug Tool. I set the codec to "Default" and turned on the performance graph, and it set itself to H265 when Air Link was fired up. That said, I also noticed a bizarre behavior where the encoder bitrate would idle up around 100 Mbps with some minor, expected variance, but every 10-15 seconds it would suddenly plummet to 10 Mbps and then slowly climb back up from there. At the same time - not sure if this is a causative factor or a symptom - the framerate would dip ever so slightly from 72 down to about 50, and would immediately spike back up (while the encoder "rebuilds" its bandwidth). I don't know if the framerate dip is causing a panic in the encoder, or if the encoder is getting overwhelmed and then briefly tanking the framerate. This was happening while I was just idling in the Oculus Link dashboard, and Windows Task Manager never showed more than 5% utilization on the GPU; no spikes in the performance graph seen there. Anyone else seeing something like this, on any hardware configuration?
I'm using AMD's Adrenalin driver, v23.7.1 (published 2023-06-26), for a basis of comparison.

Also unlike AMD Adreanlin software, you can't change the replay buffer which I hear is criminal in 2023. So while AMD can't record VR well, at least they can record better and easier than ShadowPlay.

The downside is if you're using a Quest or Quest 2, Oculus/Meta now needs to update their software as I encountered some encoding issues which make the graphics look kinda crappy. Well, crappy when compared with how the graphics look with Nvidia GPU's. I know it's an Oculus/Meta software issue because when I use Virtual Desktop the graphics look amazing, so it's obviously not a problem with AMD's hardware but it's Oculus not properly utilizing the hardware.

There are even larger issues with Windows mixed reality headsets such as the HP Reverb G2 in regards to the 7000 series. The GPU outputs very inconsistent frame times with deltas of up to +-20ms, alternating between these two bounds 4 times every second. This makes The user experience completely unusable without limiting fps to way below what the card is capable of, and say you enter a intensive scene and the fps drops below your cap? well you are back to where you started, reprojection straight up doesnt work and newer driver versions introduce horrible stuttering which doesnt even show up on any frametime graphs, on-top of the previous frametime delta issue. This has been corroborated by fellow members of my community (DCS flight sim community) who all have the same experience. Its absolutely terrible, The last time I had used AMD was 13 years ago and i really wanted to give it a try, i thorght the whole "AMD has bad drivers" thing was a bunch of FUD as I have been using there cpus for a while now and was very impressed (especially with my X3D) but I was proven wrong. I got the 7900XTX on day one and foolishly held on to it in the vain hope that amd would fix the issue but 6 months on i was sorely mistaken, learned a very valuable lesson. Never buy a dream, If it doesnt work now and people are saying it will be fixed "in the future" (when ever that is) just get the product that works now. I still hope AMD fix the issue but as more time goes on my hope dwindles.

Have you tried manually setting the encode width in the Oculus Debug Tool? Sometimes with AMD GPU's the Oculus App defaults to a really low encode resolution which looks like garbage. If you manually set it to 3680 in the debug tool that should help. Just FYI, I've tried going higher than that to see what happens and it seems however Meta is going about their encoding, you can set it too high and rather than making the image sharper and clearer the bit rate drops and then your image ends up looking like garbage again. You kinda have to find that balance where you get your encode resolution high enough to make things look good but also keep the bit rate where things look good. So far an encode width of 3680 has worked good for me. Hope this helps.

From what I gathered would the 7900XT/XTX run fine with the encoder set to H.265? Or are there stutters and the like running with that too? From what I gathered from the video is that there is a lack of support from Oculus/AMD on the driver front to natively run VR via Oculus Link, correct?

In my experience I still get stuttering and stuff with Virtual Desktop. @Trolladin1 I've actually been retesting the 7900XTX with the Adrenalin 23.7.1 driver this past week and game performance is great now. Since I use a Quest 2 though I've noticed the video stream going to the headset is not very good. I've messed around with changing settings in the Oculus debug tool, i.e. the encoder (h.264 and h.265), the encode resolution and the encode bitrate but no matter what I do the visuals look the same, kinda crappy. To see if what I was experiencing is just an Oculus software issue I tried using Virtual Desktop using both the h.264 and h.265 encoder and Virtual Desktop knows what they're doing; the visuals look great.

Yep, I've been retesting the 7900XTX and will have a new video on it this week. AMD has done their part, game performance is solid now! But, since I use an Oculus Quest 2, we need Oculus/Meta to do their part. Games run fine FPS-wise (120Hz max settings in most games is no problem), both via Link Cable and AirLink but the visuals aren't as good as they can be. The encode resolution they're using leaves things looking a little bit blurry and there are occasionally compression artifacts that make textures look muddy. I tried manually changing the encoder (switched between h.264 and h.265) and changed the encode resolution in the Oculus Debug Tool but even though it said the encode resolution was at what I set it at, the visuals looked the same as they did using the default setting. I know it's something Oculus/Meta needs to fix in their software because when I use Virtual Desktop the graphics look amazing! They're sharp and crisp and there are no compression artifacts, so it's not AMD's hardware or software that's the problem; Oculus/Meta need to get their crap together now.

Still having problems eh? What problems are you having exactly and what headset are you using? I've been testing the 7900XTX again this past week with my Quest 2 and the new Adrenalin 23.7.1 driver and VR game performance is now very good. I no longer have the stuttering problems I had before and performance in several games is now better than it was with the 23.3.1 driver I used before. That being said I'm still having problems with AirLink looking like crap and it doing the squeezing thing on the right side of my peripheral vision. If I use a Link cable the right side squeezing is gone but visuals still look like doo doo on my Quest 2. I've tried using the ODT (Oculus Debug Tool) to change the encoder from h.264 to h.265 (it seems Meta added this function in, in a recent update) as well as increase the encode resolution and encode bitrate but everything still looks like poo. When I load up the Oculus app on my PC there is a message saying my PC doesn't meet the updated minimum specifications, but I'm pretty sure a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 32GB of 3600 CL16 DDR4 and a RX 7900XTX is well above the minimum spec so I came to the conclusion that it wasn't the 7900XTX or AMD's drivers causing the problem, it's Oculus/Meta's software that is causing the problems I'm having. To test this out I fired up Virtual Desktop and games ran great and the visuals looked amazing at 120Hz on Ultra Graphics Quality, so yah... if you're experiencing these same things, it's Meta that needs to update their software to actually work with Radeon 7000 GPU's.

@@Samukr. Overall is a great experience with some downsides. After v53 AMD users started having a really solid aIrlink HEVC experience with a 6750XT, as I'm having, but there will be some scenarios where you'll just be limited by how Airlink at less than 200 mbps works as Nvidia users would also be. For instance: distant buildings on HL2:VR, foliage heavy scenes on Skyrim VR and Blade and Sorcery. They will for sure look kinda blocky. The only solution would be a really strong network (through VD beta or Airlink) or a link cable, set at 400mbps+ x264. Nvidia cards probably deal better with that scenario (I couldn't test at AMD yet because my cable/usb port is kinda broken, but I will try testing it in the next days, then I can give my feedback). The good news is that if you're beginning at VR you will probably not perceive that kind of stuff. For nitpickers like me, they are REALLY clear, I would suggest just ignoring those artifacts. They appear like 5% of the time and are really common when it comes to HMDs that work through streaming. Also, almost every game that I'm playing in VR uses more than 8gb of VRAM, so 12gb of VRAM is really welcome nowadays for general gaming as well.

@@Samukr. it seems that sometimes it happens, i don''t need to do the whole re-log in and delete files thing, i just end the task in task manager and sometimes there is warping in the right eye sometimes there isn't, mostly there isn't but still way too often there is. h.265 does work with airlink though.

@@12change I really don't think so! Just update your quest 2 and your AMD driver to the latest version and you're supposed to be good to go

You're running a gaming rid but using a Quest... that's so weird. You're like a unicorn.
Just buy a real headset and test those.

VR with the 7900 XT on the Rift CV1 still sucks. Even with the latest 5/24 driver. VR is still listed as an issue.
Update: New drivers dropped on 06/01 for support for Diablo IV. Known issues: “Certain virtual reality games or applications may encounter suboptimal performance or occasional stuttering on Radeon™ RX 7000 series GPUs”. I don’t think VR is a priority for them.

Sounds like the solution to this is to buy virtual desktop. Kinda scummy but not the end of the world.

For the time being anyway. Although, Meta did just update the Oculus PC app so I'm going to have to see how things are working now with Radeon 7000.
