Matthew Fox is so intense he always seems like he's on the brink of a panic attack. So much nervous energy. Great actor
Josh Holloway brought a sense of humor to Sawyer that was really necessary to make him a sympathetic character. If Matthew Fox had played Sawyer, I think we would have loved to hate Sawyer, and the entire show would have taken a different direction. But Matthew was a GREAT Jack.

Well, I think that's closer to how they originally wanted to portray Sawyer until Holloway got the part, and the character adapted to the actor.
Exactly what I just thought... but on the other hand, the intensity is perfectly right for playing a doctor.
c'mon people, the only reason people are even saying he would be a terrible Sawyer is because they saw him as Jack on the show. if he had gotten Sawyer the responses on this video would be totally different. nobody would say he looked like a Jack or was born to play Jack or anything like that because nobody would have ever seen him as Jack. looking back on this video after the show is over gives you a totally different point of view than you would've had if you had seen this during the casting process.
I am with you, I think the only reason that people is not getting him as Sawyer is because Holloway did a very good job portraying the character too (I have only seen a chapter so far, I am not yet used to both characters) :D

Matthew Fox was modeling in Milan in 1989 when I met him on a casting call. He was just graduated from an Ivy league school, Columbia I think. And he didn't want to pursue his study of economics so came to Milan to try modeling in addition to doing some local Footlocker TV commercials. I was also sharing an agency with Dean Winters. He was a model for "Why Not" models while Fox was with "Fashion" modeling agency. Rebecca Gayheart was also there the same year pursuing some print jobs and since she was shorter she did not do runway modeling but both Fox and Winters did some runway modeling. Fox stuck me as very private and focused and ambitious and smart. Winters was more a free spirit type just taking it one day at a time as we hung out in Why Not fashion agency. Good times!

I remember that scene. It was powerful. I loved that line about fear, that's all I give it too! I am glad he ended up as Jack and Sawyer was who he was..it was cast beautifully!

He's okay, but Josh Holloway has that naturally. Jack has his own sass, which is Matthew's thing. I'm glad he got Jack's part.
He should have played everyone on that show, like Eddie Murphy.
It's so great the way their holes fit exactly with their "way". The team who choose their characters is as great as the people who perform it.

I know everyone says that he can't be sawyer but I disagree. I think he could definitely have became Sawyer if he was picked as him. He is an amazing actor. Who knows what would have happened if he was picked for sawyer.

Holloway's Sawyer was more... quiet? Like he would be getting beat up and just deal with it with a sweet smile. He was calm and waited for his opportunity. Matthew's Sawyer seems like he'd scalp you if you got in his way. lol
He was perfect for Jack. Just perfect. I loved him and Kate. It's what kept me watching the series.

I love how his audition tape for Jack is the part with the counting to five. It came into play later on with Kate telling Jack the same story :)
its just so obvious that he is better at Jack because Matthew Fox has the habit of overacting. Being someone like Sawyer, he can't overact in the way that he does. Sawyer is supposed to have the "i dont care" attitude, and he just can't successfully do that
+sarah sterling Actually, if you see Matthew Fox in Bone Tomahawk, he has more of that "i don't care" attitude. He is getting plenty of critical acclaim and positive audience response for his performance too.

He's awesome. This right here just shows how talented Matthew Fox is, hopefully he'll be seen on the big screen in the new film 'Billy Smoke'. Go Matthew!
No one seems to be noting he pulled off a very long sawyer monologue with professional ease. I was more impressed with that than the SpinalSac speech--
which IMO he played a little too humorously for such a serious and intense event.
WOWOW! LOL i remember going into auditions but GEEZE none of my monologues were as long as his!! LOL i would have KILLED for a juicy monologue as this! LOL he's GREAT!

Am I the only one here who would actually have liked to see a sawyer like this? I mean, everyone says he would have made a terrible Sawyer but that is because they are portraying the character in completely different ways. I can't see a different way to portray Jack, but I can definitely see this as a way to portray Sawyer

Matthew Fox would have suited the Sawyer character as originally written. When they saw Josh Holloway they re-wrote the role for him then had Fox read for Jack's lines. Jack was originally supposed to show in only the pilot episode but they expanded his role.
It's amazing to see how they change things to suit the actors they get. The show became better as a result.
matt fox is a fantstic actor... he can pull off any role... i just can't picture him being any other character but jack..
I totally agree with you. I never really saw anything of his until Lost. I mean I saw Party Of Five when I was a kid, but I really couldn't credit it because I coulnd't remember it. So I watched some of his films, and he's just talented. He can pull himself from his characters, give them life, and they're unique.

When Matthew Fox drops into Jack mode about part-way through I almost break up a little bit. It's like I'm seeing something, someone, so long ago that was destined to become this huge star.. A huge star known for playing one of the greatest TV heroes of all time... and then I'm reminded of how far Jack has come the past 6 years and how it's all going to end in a few days. I kind of tear up a little. There's been a lot of Jack hate across the fan boards but I'm a big Jack fan.
that's what everybody should see after seeing lost. I like that!!!
