      The “Feel” of the G-force cannot be simulated and it is understandable that the body becomes an instrument that pilots RELY on for BFM but it is nearing excuse level here.Can’t real pilots adapt to the sim without G? The best DCS dogfighters in the world use their brains to employ tactics and can defeat the best AI which can monitor G, AOA, and turn rate etc.

    Great debrief! Disclaimer: I'm a DCS guy and dogfight online on the regular. Watching the first fight, I'm like, "unload and get your speed up!", but Gonky's explanation of not be able to feel the g's to know his jet's energy state makes perfect sense. So yea, it's easy to pull and cash in your energy without the feel if you're so used to it in the real jet. Mover, you are 100% right in that us DCS guys and gals gotta use the instruments because we don't have the feel. They are making vests now that'll squeeze you to simulate g-onset (of course nothing like the real thing). Maybe that might help from a "feel" perspective. Again, great debrief, and interesting insight.

    • @CWLemoine
      @CWLemoine  2 года назад +77

      I think there's a common misconception about speed vs energy management from DCS players. "Get your speed up" is not always the answer. Maneuver in relation to the bandit.

    • @ef2111
      @ef2111 2 года назад +10

      @@CWLemoine agreed. I could be at the same speed as the bandit, but if I maneuvered above him, I have a higher energy state because I can now trade altitude for airspeed. But sometimes you just gotta get your nose around and stay aggressive.

    • @CWLemoine
      @CWLemoine  2 года назад +48

      Well, that, and 300 knots in a Hornet is not the same as 300 knots in a T-38, for example. Maneuver potential varies. But my point was that if I'm on the deck rating at 230 knots and I'm losing, I'm not going to unload and lose more angles. I'll take what I have and fight my best fight to force it back to neutral. In the game, I unloaded and was still unable to get my knots back before Gonky's nose threatened me, thus I had to cash it all in.
      Ironically, this is exactly how every fight with two equal pilots in the same jet winds up when we're both full up.

    "Instrument BFM". This is a perfect description of what we experience in DCS. When I first started playing, I would take my eyes off the HUD for 10 seconds in the Eagle and be going over 600 kn. In the Hornet we have to fly JHMCS on or keep looking at the HUD to get that perfect cornering speed. In the Tomcat, I now rely on Jester callouts because there's no way to see the speed other than to check that gauge (no HMD, no HUD speed). I have always likened it to a real car vs playing a racing game. It's so easy in racing games to lose grip and not know why, where in real life you can feel the tires starting to go.

      It's not just the force feedback, also the suspension, g force, acceleration, and deceleration that all combine for seat-of-your-pants driving. Real driving is all feel and awareness. Excellent debrief! The lack of physical cues in DCS is a pretty huge handicap. I think it’s part of why I enjoy the F-14 so much, myself. Between Jester calling out speeds, its visceral (and often unruly) response to alpha, and frequently being able to catch a glimpse of the wing sweep, I feel very connected to the jet in a way that is absent from the more well-behaved FBW jets. Which is not to suggest I am necessarily any good at fighting in it, but at least the plane makes it very clear to me when I’m in the process of screwing up. 😂
    Of course in real BFM, the more well-behaved jet is preferable. A captain I flew right seat with, who used to fly Hornets, was rather perplexed at my gushing review of the Cat after I described some of its oddball handling characteristics! But in DCS I much prefer a well done simulation that possibly even exaggerates some of the other cues to compensate for the fact you can’t feel anything.
    (Also it’s the sexiest looking fighter ever built and that is non-negotiable)

The server I’m messing around on allows external view, trackIR, etc. I use VR, as did Gonky and Mover in this video. Fighting on that server there’s no question in my mind some players are boosting their SA with the F keys. Just one more aspect of the “unrealism” of DCS that would have to be factored out before any kind of comparison between gamers and real pilots can even start. Fighting someone who can turn their head like an owl (trackIR) in a sim is tricky. Turning your head like an owl in a 9g turn in real life is impossible, or will put you in a hospital. YMMV. This is in response to Tom C but I wanted to put it on the main thread. I find it ridiculous that any DCS gamer has the gonads or lack of mental capacity to try to advise Mover and Gonky about BFM. The guy with the link to the tutorial...YGTBFSM! DCS is a game. It is not even a reasonable facsimile of real life. It is a whole different deal strapped into the jet. I would bet lots of money that most non RL fighter pilot DCS gamers would puke before the fights on and would go to sleep on the first turn circle entry. I have given many incentive fights and almost all individuals get sick before the real tactical maneuvering even begins. Once the fights do start it is usually all they can do to stay awake. Not all succeed. They would have no chance at looking over their shoulder, working the radar and weapons systems and flying the jet. It is very difficult and actually hurts. BTW, being a civilian pilot does not always help. Jets are a completely different animal. I've had private pilots puke like they had never been in the air before. If a DCS gamer was to get in a jet, that is the environment he would be faced with. Significantly different than the environment in which they normally play the game. I seriously doubt that 99% of what they do in the game would work for them. Gonky and Mover do in RL what DCS gamers dream they could do. They are the real deal. The gamers are posers. @@CWLemoine For sure. The normal Tacview is fantastic training tool as you demonstrated here. The media feature just adds to it in unexpected ways. I just suggested it because I noticed as you were trying to recall which maneuver was which they all flow together. We've done debriefs right after some AIC training evolutions and people still mix up what they did on each of them. So for what its worth, under Analysis (3rd button), check Media and then upload the file. The tricky part is the sync, but with a video file it is much easier adjusting the time sliders. If you've done it once it is easy and you already have the recordings.

Wonder how much extra VR gives you and even like in combination with some sort of those actuated sim chairs could to add to to the emersion and if it could trick the body into feeling some type of G-force simulation. Yeah I knew it felt wrong, even knowing nothing technical about the F-16, for a Hornet to be out-rating an F-16 on the deck. Thing's a rocket with wings but honestly watching the fight it felt like you had your boards out out of burner rather than in burner, on a clean jet. If I had been in MP vs an F-16 in that scenario in the Hornet I'd try try try, but I'd just assume I was dead if he didn't miss after the two circle. Apparently, I'd be hella wrong ATM.
    Speaking to sim-isms, I don't have any experience at serious G loading but even just flying a lawnmower around you can feel the energy state of the aircraft so much better. In DCS (and any other sims of course) you can gorilla the stick back until you're barely flying at all and not even notice until the other guy is actually flying a circle around you. Even having never exceeded 125 knots, I feel like going from 350 to that in ten seconds is a pretty noticeable event to the 'ol direction detectors.

    I can totally understand you guys, not because i'm a pilot, but because i have felt the lack of tactile feedback which combined with the strange lack of spatial awareness that computer graphics lead to, makes it very hard to effectively maneuver the jet in a sim. It's the prime reason why encourage and look for "artificial" aides, like the the exaggerated cockpit and flutter sounds, or the visual screen shakes to indicate the current alpha and energy states of our planes. And why i like the Heatblur's approach of implementing such aides in the Vigger and the Tomcat. Unfortunately, many "purists" (or like you call them instrument BFM-ers, or the way i call them cockpit fliers) are strongly opposed to this, claiming that it breaks their "immersion".....whatever that is..... i guess they would rather fly 250ft merges with their nose in the cockpit :(

I think the isue is within the game engine's interpretation of those specs in relation to game physics... energy retention and ability to regain speed has been mentioned by every fighter pilot that has played the game (and there have been plenty). The damage models for both aircraft and guns are out of tune as well.
