Look there, down in the mud! It's a corpse! It's a face! It's an... octopus?
Deep under Stormveil, something ignominious and pathetic lays rotting, splaying roots of corruption into the foundations of the Golden Order.
But is Godwyn JUST dead? Or is there more to his presence, yet?

I love that this absolutely gigantic half-wolf man opens his mouth and he talks in a bizzarely soft Welsh-accented voice. I mean, I guess Welsh tracks given the name, but the delivery is very unexpected.

Seeing this again and the mention of death from life reminds me of the concept of a whale fall, where the corpses of dead whales reach the bottom of the sea and act as sources of food and are taken away by the creatures of the deep so they can continue to grow, even if the whale itself didn’t plan on its death, much like how Godwyn died and now seems to have become a source of power and life for those who live in death.

Whale falls are so interesting, because each one is essentially an entire ecosystem, flesh eaten by hagfish (which with their tendency to twist themselves into knots while feeding, and their elongated eel like body, could almost be compared to the ulcerated tree spirit visually) and sleeper sharks like the Greenland shark (which is honestly a real-life fantasy monster on its own, with poisonous flesh, eyes almost always eaten by parasites, and with Greenland sharks reaching sexual maturity at around 150 years old, and living upwards of 500 years) and even the bones slowly getting eaten by specially adapted bone eating worms (Also those serpentine tree spirits, maybe?), and the nutrients of its decay leeching into the silt around it, allowing the growth of bacterial colonies in a radius around it that support life of their own. But it’s all ultimately temporary; eventually (although it can easily take decades before this happens) there is no more of the whale left worth consuming. Godwyn seems to support a strange sort of ecosystem, and I’d argue that this is in part blended with more human element, something evocative of the mythic archetype of the dead ruler/divinity seen in the myths of Osiris from ancient Egyptian mythology and also Izanami from Shinto myth. Like Osiris, Godwyn was slain by treachery, his body, as seen in the trailer, was mutilated. But where he was once a prince of the living world, like Osiris, in death he kept his crown, becoming the Prince of Death, and continuing to exist, albeit altered physically and possibly mentally by his murder. But unlike Osiris, and similar to Izanami, his existence is an unclean one, with Godwyn and his ecosystem looking almost diseased, and surrounded by fetid, stagnant water, and appearing corpse-like (and both dead bodies and stagnant water are considered spiritually impure within Shinto beliefs). He seems to dwell underground: TBSkyen literally underwent a sort of Katabasis just to reach his resting place. What’s interesting is that within Elden ring, so far we’ve seen both the underground as a place of impurity, but also, in the case of the Regal Ancestor Spirit, as a place largely untouched by either the corruption of the surface and it’s Golden Order, or the supernatural blight of Godwyn.
Also, I can’t help but note how this blends with the oceanic/water themes of Godwyn; consider the Spirit Ashes, and how they are memories of dead things given life, and how the Tibia Mariner is drawing heavily from the myths of Charon. Water as a carrier of memory and forgetfulness/oblivion is something seen in classical mythology and especially in the Orphic mysteries: the shades of the dead drank from the river Lethe to forget themselves, and according to the Orphic tradition, by being initiated into their secrets, one could drink from Memnosyne (memory), and be reborn with the memory of your past lives intact.
Lastly, I just want to point out the connection of Godwyn to aquatic life, and the fact that there are giant crab and lobsters crawling around on land. Not sure if it’s related, but it’s worth considering.

As has been mentioned in the original stream comments somewhere I am sure, 'Blaidd' is Welsh for 'Wolf', and I was so happy and relieved when I first encountered the character and he pronounced his own name correctly. Far too often games will add Welsh or Welsh-esque names with the double-D or the double-L, and I wince every time they are pronounced as if they were singular (Final Fantasy XIV's "Llymlaen" being one example... *shudders*)
It does mean that his name is "Wolf the Half-Wolf" though, which gave me a laugh.

This episode had some very interesting insights and I'm very curious to see how your perspective will evolve/change/coalesce with further exploration/information acquired further into the game. I think Elden Ring, more than any other From Soft game, plays with perspective and context a lot -- I think this is actually one of the strongest leverage points of games as a medium, the interactive elements allowing for dramatically different experiences and therefore rather dynamic interpretations.
Rambling aside, thank you for the new entry in the series, it is genuinely one of the series where seeing it in my notifications makes me watch as soon as humanly possible. Much love. 🐟 🐙

I've always liked the interpretation that the lands between are "between" life and death, with the tarnished being banished from a place where death isn't an end point, then in the opening cutscene they seemingly awake from death to return to the lands between.
With that context, the idea that the ocean is related to Godwyn and the death of the soul meshes well with the fact that the tarnished had to cross the ocean to get to the lands between.

24:37 - Note the shape of the lantern-holder at the back of the boat; it's identical to the Martyr Effigies we find scattered throughout the world. Among its various other meanings and implications, we use these effigies to summon/be summoned in co-op and PvP. Maybe he uses it to a similar end?
edit (this is why it's best to comment _after_ watching the video):
1:01:46 - We also see a brackish liquid flow from dead Godwyn's eyes in the cinematic trailer (and a similar liquid seems to seep out from beneath the corpse under Stormveil Castle). Perhaps Elden Ring draws a connection between the saltwater of tears and the saltwater of the oceans, and thus a connection between Godwyn (who notably has an eye motif) and the ocean. All of this is speculation, of course.

🦑 this series was my intro to this channel so i’ve been super excited for a new episode as i basically binged all the earlier ones! i’ve been watching the bloodborne series while i wait though and that’s been fantastic as well, i’ve never even played any souls games but i’m really interested in them so i love your work!!

On the topic of the Tibia Mariners, the image immediately came to me of Charon, a ferryman taking the souls of the dead to their final destinations on a long boat, often depicted rowing it.

Another cool little visual thing related to Godwyn is all the little crabs in the game actually have his face on their backs, which kind of relates him more to oceanic stuff as well.

🐋Hey Skyen, just so you are aware, that orange knight down there is actually a boss in some locations. They are known as Crucible Knights. They (in my opinion at least) are some of the cooler enemies both in design and in lore. I highly recommend trying to track and hunt them all down, as their armor and weapons are pretty fun for a strength/faith build.

I look forward to more episodes of this series, and you can be absolutely sure I'll write my own interpretation of Elden Ring - it's a deeply, deeply personal game to me, and it's been crucial to some of the most important recent moments of my life.

A small detail near the corpse of Godwyn that you "missed" in your playthrough: In your footage there were two bloodstains near the face. One of them was a player bloodstain, and the other was actually an NPC bloodstain. The Death Root is (unsurprisingly) also what you see when you character gets inflicted by Deathblight (the stuff e.g. Basilisks spew) and one NPC in particular got a little too close to Godwyn's face and actually contracted Deathblight there. For sake of maybe discovering that yourself on a second playthrough, I will not name the NPC, but they make it fairly explicit that this is what happened to them (even if you miss the bloodstain itself).
Interestingly enough, the face also...bleeds. When you attack the normal terrain you get a sparking effect, and with Godwyn's face it actually has blood particle effects attached like when you hit an enemy. Also I think the sound of your footsteps while walking on him is different from the normal terrain.
Something I haven't heard explored from among all the other creators I follow for Soulsborne stuff is the Christian angle for Godwyn's role in the story. Maybe because the imagery is just one step too far removed with the whole "night of the knives" thing, but definitely a compelling angle to consider and maybe for Fromsoftware to explore. (Sidenote: This is exactly the kind of analysis that you often say is more of a unique contribution on your part to the space!)
Overall Godwyn is a really interesting part of the game that I fully expect to be explored more in the DLC. And by that I mean we probably aren't going to get a single question regarding him answered. Although I do suspect they MIGHT drop at least a singular hint towards an in universe planned resurrection of Godwyn. There's hints that they might be giving us hints. (I swear we're not going insane again.) 🐙🐙
PS: Something I forgot about until you mentioned the location of his corpse - he IS the first (named) descendant of Godfrey the Golden, who Godrick explicitly invokes. Considering Godrick is the last (relevant) descendant of the Golden Lineage, that might explain why exactly Godwyn's corpse is under Stormveil. Although Godrick did grab Stormveil a good chunk into the Shattering, so that definitely isn't the whole story.

If I had to pick one for you to do, it would obviously be the former, but I’m glad that, even if the episodes take some time, they’re still coming!
You’re also probably the first person I can think of who’s actually talked about the sea in relation to the culture of the Lands Between. It wasn’t until you brought it up that I realized that that we can see the ocean from so many places but there’s next to no mention of fishing or sailing.🐋🐋🐋

God I love these videos so much. I'm a little late to the party on this one, but between the funny gameplay, the fascinating insight into the designs of the game, and the gravitas added to sentences of import, I really enjoyed this one. You continuously give me new insights on a game I've spent hundreds of hours playing, whether it be noticing how important a detail I thought inconsequential could be, or even just explaining how the developers were able to invoke a feeling from me that I'm not able to put into words. I love seeing your videos pop up in my feed, even if this one slipped through the cracks for a bit, because I know I won't just be entertained but also informed, and given another reason to appreciate a game that I've loved for quite some time. Thank you for taking the time to make these, and for putting so much effort into each and every one!
