  • Skiving leather is the process of thinning down leather at specific points to make it easier to join and to make the finished product less bulky. In this video we show how to use various hand tools to skive leather.

Geordie , thanks for showing me the secret to skiiving is not only moving the blade forward or backward, but also sliding it sidways a little so it slices.

Thank you Sir for clearing up the mystery of hundreds of simple tools used in skiving leather. As a guy who is restoring a truck from my childhood as a retired certified auto tech, I have set my self up with tools, practice. Since ones box of tools is never full enough, I am sewing my leather bucket seats, door panels and let’s not forget the visor. As skiving is to leather, a ratchet is to an auto tech. A French seam will not look flat or wrapping the visors to the edge inside, seen all of the time. No one wants to do body work a leave a missed dent in the bonnets middle to remind you of your mistake of not catching it.
I truly love learning but doing as well. I built the fuel injected engine, the over-drive automatic transmission and completed the re-gearing of the final drive with new bearings & gear ratio I felt is best for my vintage 54 Chevy. Now, off the learn more as you have a new subscriber to watch videos on you channel. I find it strange that some technology remains the same, as others are going to rocket ships with more computers on board todays new automobile, while the oldest on a family farm, answered a wooden phone along with 4 neighbors. Sorry, i’ve a little long. Don’t have cable or social online usage. So not crazy as others appear! Carry on! Great demo and it like #3. Ed of the North

Thanks for explaining this, I'm only going to be using this to make some miniature tack for model horses in a diorama, the girl who I got the idea from is really good (Josefine at Daisy Stalls on RUclips) at all kinds of miniature harness. I have some scrap leather, just got your preferred knife and needed to know the technique. I hope it works as it can look really realistic as you can see if you have a look at one of her saddle making videos.

There was a lot of people at school who went skiving for days, skiving in Scotland means to be absent without permission, l kept on thinking of that when you kept on saying skiving

I was a good boy at school and I never skived! It is only as an adult, that I now skive regularly.

We in the midlands also know skiving as bunking off from work etc.

Thanks for sharing. I find skiving a challenge. Especially projects with hard to reach areas like wallet T-slots. I might be using the wrong skiving tool for the job.

I have one of those cheap shivers. It's junk.
I find stropping the blade beats sharpening. The more polish on the blade the better. It just slides as it cuts. Just like warm butter.

Does the skiving knifes work with all kinds of leather? The leather I need to skive is fleshy and stretchy and I don't seem to get rid of lots of excess flesh. What's the problem?

Why not butt the ends together and staple or stitch? Glue seems too weak a joiner alone

Geordie, I appreciate your videos, but some of us wear noise canceling Ear buds which are amplifiers in our ears. (BOSE) Your microphone picks up every detail including every time you Cough. It's very harsh on sensitive ears. I know this is an old video, but I wanted you to be "conscience" of the Coughing into the mic going forward. Thanks and carry on. Angel from The Bay
