I hope you enjoy the video and hopefully learnt something new. Just remember, there are many ways to skive leather and the ones show in the video are how I choose to do them.
Hi Jo, will watch the video shortly and am sure I will learn a lot! Just wanted to take time to say thank you for all the knowledge you have shared over this year (and previous years!). Hope you had a great festive period and hope that 2023 will be a great, successful year for you!
@@JHLeather Hi Jo, just been browsing your website and in the image on your shop front there are two gorgeous pieces in a wine/burgundy colour... You don't happen to remember what leather it is you used? I really 'need' to buy some.
Taping down the leather when it doesn't have much depth to hold onto may be the most helpful thing in this video. I have never seen that done in a "how to skive" video.
Nice 0ne Luv' I'm relatively new to the craft, and video's like this are helping me learn every day. Keep 'em coming, this ol' boy in Canada needs you.
You make this look so easy and effortless Jo - obviously due to the hour after hour of practice😁 That taping down trick seems so obvious now you've shown us it, sort of makes me feel a bit silly for not having thought of it before 😲 Hope you all had a great xmass and 2023 brings you all loads of happiness!
When I use straight edge skiving knife I start with bevel up (normal use) when I get to depth I need I flip knife to bevel down, this makes it easier to maintain same thickness to the edge. This can also be done with single bevel round knifes, for angled edge knifes you would need right and left handed knife.
Thank you so much, this was very helpful for me as I progress in this craft that I have been at for a year now and I practice something every day. Tool maintenance is practiced as well. Do you know more women's leather craft channels?
Wonderful as always Jo!! It’s been a while since I’ve checked out your videos, glad to be back….. Perhaps consider wrapping your parring knife with leather, better grip AND it looks so COOL! 😊 G
Just a personal experience mention, I have tested numerous kinds of skiving blade edge shapes and for me the “right curve” or “quarter/round” very thin skiving blade is far more efficient at “slicing the leather due to the curve. Also, if the blade is made from a true “high carbon” steel like O1, D2, or most “Japanese high carbon” steel, they cut and sharpen much better than any other. Most marketing suggests a stainless steel or tool steel is better. They are not. Those steels are much more difficult to get a proper edge on.
So i was looking at those leather tool kits that you get online, and thinking about skiving knives. Something caught my eye, it was a tool with replaceable blades which said "DESIGN IN GERMANY" on it, which for one is just funny; for other it looked familiar, it's something you get in every store over here, it's a scraper for foot calluses, costs about 1.30€ and 10 replacement blades cost less than 1€. Obviously the real foot scraper has "MADE IN GERMANY" on it instead :D I tried the foot scraper, and the outcome left me a little unconvinced, so i'm wondering whether i need to modify the tool somehow, or whether that's just my lack of skill and technique. I don't have any leatherworking experience, i'm just gearing up for my first project. I want to re-dress a pair of old headphones, headband and pads both, in real leather of some wild nice colour and nice and soft, because why not. Might do some watch bands and such as well while i'm at it or at first.
I am new to leather craft and find your videos very informative. May I ask where you buy your hardware from, I am a cabinet maker and sometimes find it hard to find good quality hardware for my work.
Depends on the type of skive you need to do, really. I find my mini paring knife is great and my go to for longer skiving 👍 also make sure you knife is super sharp and strop it regularly if you are doing a lot of skiving 👍
The tape is so obvious a help that I feel like a complete idiot for not thinking of it. Stitch groover for the french shave was also a good idea. Thanks for the tip, cheers!
Hope you had a great festive season Jo, great tip with the tape! sometimes I surprise myself and a skive works well other times its a disaster. A good rummage through the scrap bag and practice practice. Super sharp blades I find work the best.
This is a super helpful video. Thanks very much for posting this. I'm just kicking off my leatherwork and videos like this are invaluable to me. My skiving knife is now super sharp too!
Ms JO, have you made a video on which size edge beveling tool that is good to use on different thicknesses/weight of leather, Some like 3 to 8 ounce #0 edger works with 3 to 8 ounce leather. And also I wanted to wish you a belated Happy New Yeard your family. Thank you for great videos.

It makes a big difference, especially with the thinner leathers
It's one of those 'doh' moments... So simple when you see it but loads of us won't have. Definitely a tip I am taking forward.

@@JHLeather Thanks🤗

Glad you found it helpful 🙂
Thanks, Jo 😁
Glad you like it 🙂
Thank you. Please mind your fingers! A few close shaves (no pun intended) there when brushing off the waste leather.
Thank you

I'll have to try that 👍

Yes I do! Check out my tool time videos : ruclips.net/p/PLZO6lEBBAWY8cO0W9evO2r4tLbf_4haXa
Very niiiiiice
Tape the piece down, brilliant.
I feel dumb lol
It's a proper game changer 👍
Olive this women thanks

I get the majority of my fittings from Abbey England 👍
Jo, which company makes your favorite “head knife”?
The one I use was custom made but the George Barnsley ones are great (I use these on my 1:1 workshops)
what would you use to skive a large hide of deer hide ?
Depends on the type of skive you need to do, really. I find my mini paring knife is great and my go to for longer skiving 👍 also make sure you knife is super sharp and strop it regularly if you are doing a lot of skiving 👍
DO you know if LEFT Handed versions of the tools exist? I always find it difficult to use tools shaped for the wrong hand.
You can get some, like left handed pricking irons and a left handed creaser but not sure on the others
Beautiful and talented? Subscribed!! ☺
Thank you 👍
I want to learn all this from basic. Names of tools, sizes, cost, polish, coloring leather, etc
Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/E-z8yNvS7Uw/видео.html
Hi Jo, what stitch groover brand do you use? There are lots of poor quality ones out there? thanks Richard
Heya Richard, I use one I got from Tandy a good few years ago 👍
i love you!
The tape is so obvious a help that I feel like a complete idiot for not thinking of it. Stitch groover for the french shave was also a good idea. Thanks for the tip, cheers!
Glad you found it helpful 👍
Great video… where can I get a pairing knife like the one in your video? TIA.
You can get it here: www.georgebarnsleyandsons.co.uk/product-page/mini-paring-knife 👍

Brilliant thanks Joe
I find it to be the hardest part of leatherwork - and think having a very hard surface to work on is critical to this.
Yes, your right, a smooth hard surface makes all the difference. 👍
With such clarity you have told so many methods. Thanks a bunch❤
Glad you found it helpful 😊
