    My name is Tim. Thanks for checking out my RUclips channel. I started leather working in July of 2020. My passion for leather work quickly grew as I learned and practiced. I received a ton of help from the leather working community when I was new and now I aim to pass on what I learn to other beginner leather workers. I post weekly leather craft videos that include tutorials, free pdf pattern templates, how to's, tips and tricks, and any other leather work content that I think could help you out!

    Could you do a video on how to sharpen a knife like this?

    Premium feel is a good explanation. Acquiring such top quality treasures gives the feeling you're set for life. Happy new knife, it's beautiful! I am very happy with my chisels and blades from Crimson Hides.

    Hey Tim! Funny you are showing a new 'skiving' knife made by a professional knife maker. I went that route years ago. Nigel Armitage mentioned a knife maker in one of his old RUclips vids. After doing some digging, I got a hold of Terry and had him make me two knives. Both under $100 and were perfect. But, I didn't or couldn't get the hang of them. So, I now use an Xacto #2 holder and a #2 blade. I strop it all the time. It is much stiffer than a #11 blade. Eric from Corter Leather and Buckleguy are going to be offering a brass #2 holder. The unique thing about his blade holder is that you can insert rods inside to get more weight in the knife. Brass is so much more comfortable than light Aluminum. I like really heavy tools. Can't wait. He has also designed his own stitching chisels. They look really neat. He includes all the stuff that's great from other designs. Still waiting for them to become available.

      Haha I also use an Xacto knife for a lot of my cutting. Stropping the blades prolongs them like crazy! I figure you can never have too many knives 😂

    I got my knife made by local knife maker with high carbon steel, costs me 600 Indian rupees (8 USD). A half cut moon knife also helps for LC

    Hi and thanks for the video, very informative and prevented me from buying the cheap amazon knife. Could you make a list of recommendations for alternatives to the Ibex knife for the beginner? I am looking for a skiving knife to get me started.

    I got a wuta skiving knife to replace the dirt cheap one just like your kit knife. It's about 50$ but boy is it worth it. Took some time to get it sharpened sufficiently but now it cuts like through the proverbial butter.

  • @michaels2208
    @michaels2208 Год назад +1

    Lol, the knife you replaced was an upgrade from the one I got in my Amazon kit. I saw the Damascus round knife at Tandy and thought about it. But just like you said about supporting small crafters, I'll look around and maybe look local and see if I can get something nice.

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  Год назад

      Man those Amazon kits are super inconsistent! I've seen some with actually decent stitching chisels whereas mine were awful. Also the thread that came in my kit was something else haha

      @@BlackFlagLeatherGoods oh don't get me started on the stitching chisels. My life changed when I bought good ones. I didn't even get sinabrooks like you did, eventually.

    Lol! Yeah. I went through the same process a few months ago. Honestly, those Amazon kit knives are en insult to butter knives. ;)
    Basically, I'd say that any leather tools with a cutting edge should be of the highest quality you can afford. Quality tools will last a lifetime and will actually save you a lot of time and money, probably a lot faster than you would think. Besides, very high quality blades usually aren't incredibly more expensive than cheap ones, unless one goes for some exotic, artisan hand made ones. :D

    • @BlackFlagLeatherGoods
      @BlackFlagLeatherGoods  Год назад +1

      Absolutely! This knife falls more into the artisan handmade category but damn it's nice to work with.
