If you balk at Tandy prices, just look for some Barry King tools. My Dad was a leather carver and did tons of purses, belts etc. What little I learned, the tooling is the "Zen" or part where your creative starts to take over after you become experienced.
Great video. Look forward to you making the new stitching pony. The one that I made from plywood had a wide base so I could sit on it and do the stitching on the floor while I was watching TV!

Wow, I feel like I just made a new friend! I came here specifically to gather info about basic tools for leather craft, and I absolutely got more than I expected. Great explanations for each tool (and Bonus - a visual of each tools purpose). Just gathering the correct names of the tools was exciting. (You'd be surprised at the names I came up with for several of these pieces.) You're absolutely right... there is something very satisfying about working with leather, and even your simple (yet beautifully made) sheath was wonderfully satisfying in its finished form. Thanks for this great video, your incredibly engaging personality, and all the helpful info I was able to gain in just 16 short minutes. All the Best to you!
I really enjoy Tandy leather myself. They give a 10% discount to military and first responders which based on the price of the products can really cut down costs. Thank you so much for this detailed list and the close ups. Been trying to find a good burnishing close up to see how well it really works. Thanks again!
That bladed tool you’re calling a “safety beveler” to trim the edges of your work is actually a skiver. You can use it to thin out your leather. Spray it with a little water then you can run the shiver over it to skim off the meat on the back of your leather. I use it most often to thin out the edges before gluing up and stitching parts. When burnishing your edges, it’s helpful to use a piece of canvas to rub that edge down after you coat it with either your beeswax or saddle soap or one of the commercial edge finishes. The canvas builds up heat pretty quickly and really helps to smooth out the edge and start to harden it up a little bit. Then come back and slick it with your burnishing tool. I have a couple that I’ve run a screw into so I can chuck the tool up in a drill and run it down the sides that way rather than working up a sweat trying to rub it like a teenage boy in the shower. Just some suggestions.
Between you and walter sorrels is where i pretty much learned how to make knives. I forge my own but that was just a matter of getting what i needed. Thanks for making so many good videos

🤣 1970's calling.. I almost did some leatherwork yesterday but got distracted and ended up using plywood. Might sort out my leather tools today, some are grandads about 100 yrs old. One thing you should have covered is length of thread for a given length of stitching eg 4 inches of stitching needs how much thread.. nothing worse than running out of thread with only 6 stitches left 😟

Hey man love your work. But I think you might be ruining your diamond wholes by twisting the awl in the hole after you punch it. I am really new to leather work but, from what I have read, the diamond awl and forks are supposed to create a diamond hole so the stitch's creates, more easily, a diagonal pattern with the stitches. I think it would add that extra + to your sheaths. Anyway love your work brotha!
I found some of my leather tools from many moons ago. Started doing a few projects but needed a few more, doesn't take much to drop a hundred or two at TANDY LOL. I made a couple of hatchet and folding saw pouches for my two boys for Christmas. Check our my video if you want.

The classic Sheridan style tooling does nothing for me, I've been practicing my tooling with other designs. I've been tooling a lot of Celtic designs lately but the bulk of my carving and tooling revolves around lettering. Your method for locking your needles on the thread is interesting, haven't seen that one before, I just run the needle through the tag end and pull it down over the eye to lock it down.
You are so easy to understand, moreso than anyone else. Thankyou. I bought a set of leather tools from Amazon which seem to be very high quality and also inexpensive. Some of the tools I have no clue how to use but you helped me.

General guide is six times the length of the stitch line.
👍 trial and error taught me 5 times, 6 is safer but i didn't have much thread at the time 😁
