Love this book! ruclips.net/user/postUgkxpCNxqmAkyjN6NPx1fyB7QiEFWyO5mUWL it is simply one-of-a-kind! I really love it, because karah explained all tools required to have the job done, not mentioning the fabulous diy pallets ideas. I'm pretty sure this will be a fresh start in my new endeavour. Amazon was great, they delivered on time. Thank you!
You just solved a huge problem we have with our cat - had never even considered this. Seems a lot easier than teaching the cat to close the door, which we've failed at repeatedly.
Thank you, glad it was helpful
You need to teach your cat to leave the door open, it'll soon do the opposite...😏
It's less destructive and obvious than what I did... Install a small dog door in the door.
Very cool, very helpful. These aren't common in the US, great to see the install and door in action.
My sisters cat was taught to open and close doors herself (She would jump up and pull the handle down to open and then push it shut behind her) I could do with a door closer on my kitchen door, not for my cat but for my grandkids who were all, apparently, born in a field. Love your content Keith, thanks.
My one does the cupboard in the toilet, but only when I am there, just so he can look inside, and see if anything has changed, so he can show me he is being active and making sure.
🤣👍
Thank you!
Great jog, Keith. Your instructions and the video were easy to follow. This is my first exposure to a door closer of this variety. Thanks for sharing this video with us.
Your cats certainly hit the lottery when they found you and your wife.
Just used this video to get one of these re-fitted to a door that I removed it from years ago. Thank you so much! Your video helped me understand the mechanism and the tensioning. I didn't have the included tool so I used a claw hammer to pry, and an allen key to slot through the chain and hold it in place. Worked like a charm!
Only ever had to fit one of these on an FD30 when we cut through between our kitchen and garage. I fortunately had my Dad (a carpenter for 50 something years) to call on as YT wasn’t a thing back then. Always appreciate the sharing of knowledge especially for those without a trade guru to hand. Cheers Keith
Thanks. One in my door has broken - door won’t shut. I didn’t even know what to call it so this is really helpful and I’m going to attempt to remove or fix it this weekend!!
Great video Keith, you have created a great instructional video for these... nice one
Thanks matey, I’m 74 and disabled but still managed to do it with your help! Saved a few bob
Best use I've ever heard of, lovely kitties!
As I am going to fit the first of this kind, you've been super helpful. Thank you.
Very good idea I've not thought about getting these until watching this. So many times I've sat down, noticed the doors open then had to go back and shut it.
You’re are superstar! Ours un-tensioned and came off, your method showed me how it assembled 👍
Great video perfectly explained
Never really thought about using these, although I have seen them about. But great video Keith you have changed my mind !
Absolutely love the lengths you go to, and the consideration you give your pets! 😁
Thanks for an excellent guide. As you say, the instructions were dreadful . I used a different method to retain the chain. I inserted a long very thin screwdriver through2 the link. Much easier to insert than the provided " template".
This was really helpful. I found a claw hammer rather than a crow bar worked to pry the plates apart without damaging the door, so long as you roll the top of the hammer along the length of the door. I also used plyers to put the tool in place and rotate it... not sure I trusted getting my fingers trapped in it.
Thank you so much for a great video. Your guidance was spot on, so clear and easy to follow and I surprised myself by doing a job like this which I would otherwise not readily take on. Thanks again
There are a lot of American and very few Brit RUclipsrs but you are one of the best. Regards.
Thank you very much
Good job. Had to refit one of these a year ago without the tool and it was the biggest pain in the arse and as you said, no good videos I could find online!
That is a totally new thing to me, and thank you for showing it.
Thanks Keith, great video as usual!
Great video, perfectly explained the mechanism and fitting for me to sort out mine, cheers
Great video Keith. I have one of these on my door between my utility room and the integral garage and didn't know about changing the tension. Useful tips as always buddy
Thanks mate
Really good video, thanks
This is a great help! Thank you!!
Great Video thank you 👏👏👏👏👍 Your instructions and the video were easy to follow. I have subscribed
Been thinking of getting one of these for a while. The reasons are similar to yours, not a cat but a six year old human. Good to see one in use and a real recommendation.
Thank you
good video ! well done again ! !
We had one on our last house for the Garage door. It was Viscous. If you didn't catch the door as it was closing it would remind you with one hell of a bang. Interesting to see one being installed and adjusted. Wish Your Video had come out 29 years ago. As That is when My Parents bought the house and I bought it off my Dad after my Mum passed away 12 years ago. One of my daughters got clobbered bit after following my into my Studio conversion. As the garage was too narrow to put any of our cars in and get out. Wimpy design quality.
Thanks it helped a lot
Nice one fella, Thanks.
Absolute Legend! Thank you
Thank for making this video!
Originally fitted mine several years ago but recently the concealed bolt had somehow unscrewed/freed itself. Of course the original instructions and special tool were nowhere to be found so I used your video to remind me of how it all worked, cleaned, lubed and refitted with a claw hammer as tensioner and vice grips to hold the spring taught while screwing in the last plate. Thanks.
Great video!!
Loved the hands on approach!, I didnt understand until the end what was the device was for. Great to see cats using it and dylans portrait ❤ i keep a pic of my cat too
Thanks Pablo 👍
Nice one. Good video. 👍
What a good idea, Keith. We could use these on a few of our doors as we have both cats and dogs. Would love an update on how Mickie and Hazel are getting on👍🏼👏🏼🙏🏻
Cheers Mandy, I'll try and do a bit of an update in the next video if I can squeeze it in 👌
Excellent video, thank you very much indeed.
Great idea, we have several self closing doors, either for privacy or keeping heat in. Those closer types are horrible though. Crude, very cheaply made and a ball ache to fine tune the adjustment. They tend to be sprung too firmly even on softest setting (they’re designed to pull fire doors after all). Forget even trying to adjust without causing damage once the keep has been lost. They can also be noisy if installation alignment is off. Sprung hinges are way easier, especially if sized to match your existing hinges (no chopping out, no drilling, straight swap often the same screw positions!). Their adjustment can still be a little fiddly but you don’t lose skin in the process and the closing force is more adjustable for all door weights.
Nice one mate. You saved me a headache.
Cheers!! good job...
Very interesting Keith.
Thank you so much for this! Just what I needed! Have to get this right first time as we have stained wood doors and we’re in a rental property! Similar reason to you too as we have a border collie who can open doors - including the back door but doesn’t close them behind him! G
Thanks pal
Fitted one of these twice and always made a mess. Thanks for the vid and tips
Brilliant video
Thank you
Thank you
Good vid thanks Keith. I had fitted one of these to an upstairs door and failed miserably setting it up. Good point with the cats, i have renamed our cat "heat loss"
Love the cat content
We have a similar cat/heat/door problem - thanks for the heads up about these door-closers and of course your beautifully enacted instructions. (next video - how to patch up small glitches on the edge of doors, lol)
Absolutely no reflection on you Keith, but what a Faff, there must be a better way/device !
I fitted some "rising butt hinges" in our previous property, primarily for accommodating a slight change in floor levels but it did also slowly close the door, it worked for us but not adjustable apart from with lubrication, also when fitting these you have to allow for the rise at the top of the frame - ask mw how I learned this ! 🤔😬🙄
We had the opposite problem when my son when he was a toddler as he would slam EVERY open door, often with your keys on the other side ! 😂
Nice one geeza!
Instructions are indeed absolutely useless! Thank you for the video!
I'm the same when it comes to instructions Keith,
Have the time it's self explanatory too.
Like yourself,
It's just common sense mate.
Great video chap👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you
Instructions are indeed rubbish, this has been very helpful… thanks
Thanks for the tip, I couldnt figure out how to get both sides fixed without squishing my fingers!
Very handy
The spring on these is pretty brutal. Fixing one end into something solid to try and crowbar the plate out is a must.
Nice one mate, I just discovered and subscribed to your channel yesterday while looking for silent compressor videos, and low and behold what should pop up today but a video about the concealed closers I bought ages ago and have been putting off fitting. Mine are to keep the furry alarm clocks out of the bedroom!
Awesome, thank you!
They are a brilliant idea for pet owners 👏
Super Video, going to save me a lot of time and most likly hair as I will not be pulling mine out. Thanks.
You can use a claw hammer to tension the chain. Avoids damage to the door.
Thanks very very much we moved into our flat with one of these door closer’s pre fitted and it was a finger removal device 😢I did not have the extra bit to help with the chain or even know you could alter the tension just purchased a new one and refitted to previous holes job done 😊
Thank you
Good sharing
You're instructions were way better way way better
Nice job, Keith -- and Happy Birthday!
Thank you!

If you fit the door closer to the door and then close the door the middle part of the plate that goes on the frame should leave a mark giving you the perfect positioning.
And thanks for sherring. 👀
Legend
Very neat job. I've thought about installing a cat flap in the door to the lounge but the missus won't let me. Have used external closer mechanisms in the past which are much easier to install but unsightly. May give this a go myself. Cheers.
Thanks Lee
You're better off drilling and fitting the tube first, then close the door and the sticky out bit on the frame faceplate will leave an indent in the actual frame so you'll know where to fit the plate.
i had one of these on my front flat door 🚪 but i had to take it out, because i kept locking myself out… where the door slams back in your face. But now, i cannot seem to get it back in. My spring loader might be different to yours.
i don’t know if i can take it apart? After watching this video clip.. I’ll take another closer look at it; and see if i can pull it apart.

What if you don't have a key for the chain I lost mine and your amazing
Pretty nice work, Keith! 😃
I've never seen one of those! But it seems really useful!
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Thanks, you too!
I've fitted exactly one of these and I had no idea how to pull the chain out so it could be screwed to the jamb. I don't remember seeing one of those tension adjustment plates though, I ended up sticking a small screwdriver into the chain.
Tie a bit of cord round the end and pull that instead of using a crow bar. Once you’ve got enough can pulled out to hold, wedge a small drill bit in the chain to hold it so you can fix the end to the lining.
Similarly, I used a brad nail through the chain link.
I need a solution for a very light internal wood porch door, which is regularly left open and lets the cold in to the hallway. If I was to fit this and keep the tension tight so that it closes, would it slam and make a door-slammy noise?
Every carpenter’s nightmare 😂
Hello ,I have same doors on my flat ,how to fix a creaking chain in the door 😨? Is it very noisy
I am finding the concealed closers are not strong enough to pull fire doors.. should I use 2 per door or is there any other concealed closer that works better?
the funny thing is I'm always annoyed at my crooked house but it does make it easy for the doors to never shut. They sway this way and that randomly like it's haunted. Good for the cats.
I think that you should drill the door first is so you put it in and then draw/scribe around the plate. Then screw in place. Finally place the
you should have piloted the outer bit when you had it off! Good video though, thanks
Thanks Keith great idea! Don't have any cats but the wife and bloody kids are untrainable!
We're thinking about getting a Russian Blue, this could be a sign Kieth, best tell the mrs 😬
Helpful video, thank you. I have a question. Why can't you fit the mechanism into the door frame to reduce the risk of damaging the door?
Because the door frame isn't 6" deep.
3/4" jamb, airspace, 2x4, 2nd 2x4... that's plenty of support in a wood stud wall.
So the question still remains.
Thanks for this video, it’s really helpful. I abandoned installing mine after starting the pilot hole and realising how close the 25mm bit will come to the edge of the door (I placed it in the middle of the door). Do you see any reason the shaft part couldn’t be put in the frame with the plate in the door? It’s a stud wall with no cable so I could get through easily I just wonder if there is a reason not to do it that was?
I was wondering that too
As a joiner I have fitted lots of these door closes they are ok but I must admit I don’t like them to fit and I don’t think much too them
I had the same idea a couple of days before the video came out for the exact same reason, so glad I saw the video before doing mine. However, I already have a 26mm drill bit so do you think that would still be ok or would it be too loose?
Cheers
To be honest even 25mm was quite loose so you could probably go down even more
@@RagnBoneBrown that's great thank you. Might have a 24mm bit somewhere.
Could t understand the instructions. This video was perfect
I took mine off so I could remove the doors to paint and didn’t realise how much tension would be on it and and I unscrewed it without jamming the chain and it ripped off the frame and jammed my finger
Gratitudes made it easier 🙏🪛🔨🚪
I have the same issue with the cat pushing open the bedroom door at night, letting the heat out. My current solution is keeping a pole (an extendable decorators one) by the bed to push the door shut without having to get up 😸. He's not even my cat, it's next door's cat who sometimes likes to sneak in and get on my bed 😽
Great idea!
I could do with this for my living room door my kids are incapable of closing it
👍👍👍.
Do you think this could work on an outside wooden gate ? My postman is forever leaving it open ? But would prefer a soft close option
I suspect the chain would rust so I think they're for.indoornuse only
Well I installed like your video but ended up with staples in the way got past that bit the tool provided bent too easily 🤬😂 it is installed though 🎉🎉🎉
