Tommy Emmanuel is an Australian guitarist, songwriter and singer known for his complex fingerstyle technique, energetic performances and the use of percussive effects on the guitar. Originally a session player in numerous bands, Emmanuel carved out his own style as a solo artist, releasing award-winning albums and singles.
In the May 2008 and 2010 issues of Guitar Player magazine, he was named 'Best Acoustic Guitarist' in its readers poll. In June 2010 Emmanuel was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia. In 2011 he was inducted into the Australian Roll of Renown.
Having closed the Sydney Olympics, performed more concerts than arguably any living guitarist, and being one of a handful of CGPs (certified guitar players) Tommy is truly one of the greats.

Great interview with the G.O.A.T. !!! Much love to both of you!
I like that expression- regarding improv- "fly my kite"
He just said he wouldn't imagine tackling Hallelujah.. Only for me to have seen the most EPIC version ever from Mike and Edward Ong this week. :)
I was practicing Classical Gas five minutes ago and suddenly this pops up on my feed. I'm gonna watch the whole thing right now.
The Tonewood Amp truly is an amazing thing. I absolutely believe that you use it all the time, because I do too. Easily one of the greatest inventions of the last 50 years.
This is the most interesting "acoustic guitar players" interview, that I have ever listened to.
When these kind of exceptionally talented and very hard working guitarists talk to each other I just listen and enjoy. Thank you. 😀
Thanks Tommy and Mike, I appreciate y’all sitting down and having this conversation it was a pleasure to listen to.
Two of my favourite guitar players.....nothing more to be said.
"Mike Dawes has a podcast" Not only talented but also the king of no clickbait allowed.
Several years ago 2004ish my daughter was just born I heard Tommy play Angelina; what a melody, and been a fan since. Kudos to you guys for tastefully taking the acoustic into uncharted waters.
Bruh!!! Tommy is actually responsible for the Hybrid microphone pickup system to be invented for acoustic guitar Damn!!! I learn something new about Tommy Emmanuel thanks to him for bringing such big repertoire to the fingerstyle acoustic world!!! Yet so humble!!
Hi Mike, thanks for this interview, as a long term Tommy fan, i can say this interview is among the best ones in years, at least for guitarists. For those interested in Tommy's guitar models history and how evolved, i recommend to search for old Tommy clips playing in autralian tv shows, even in a shopping center hall!
I freakin love your sense of humor Mike. Keep being you, you musically gifted wizard
First saw Tomny about 6 or 7 years ago on a UK tour with Clive Carroll ( another great player). Tommy just came out and stepped up to the 2 second rule, playing at a blistering pace which sounded like 250bpm. And he didn't even look at what he was playing ! Unbelievable. Then I met Mike . Equally unbelievable in a different way. Tommy plays like a whirlwind on steroids. Mike appears to put less energy into his performance but when you dissect both players style they are both superhuman.
I didn't even find Tommy Emmanuel through his music. A guy shared a video of him fixing a guys guitar at a meet and greet. It was just a neck adjustment. But he still went out of his way to do it. Class.
He's such a classy dude
Brilliant interview thank you 👏👏👏
This podcast was legendary. Awesome interview!!
Just did my weekly search for Tommy interviews and BAM!! Stoked
This is just plain awesome, thank you!
Fantastic Guitarists but more importantly great souls.
Man I love you both!! 😍 You literally made my day with that podcast! ❤️
Awesome interview Mike. ❤❤
Thank's you for all this interview that are great! Can't wait to see pettri sariola ( and thomas leeb and don ross and all of those great player :) )
Great episode! Tommy is such a legend. Thanks for this one Mike!
Really enjoyed these podcasts Mike, some very educational and funny conversations, you and all your guests were awesome, and finishing the series off with Tommy was just a joy. I look forward to the the next one, thank you! 🤘😃
Really happy to have Mike pick the brain of my greatest inspiration as a musician. Great podcast!
This is one of the best, funnest interview I’ve seen. Just wonderful. Hats off to both of you and specifically for the authentic conversation. Thank you, inspiring!
I enjoyed this podcast very much. Thank you, Mike, Tommy and Tonewood Amp for making it possible. I particularly like the end when he played a little guitar too. Bravo. : o )
This was an awesome interview, thanks Mike for interviewing this legend. You're both legends and your playing bring such joy !
Sensational interview Mike! I really loved the mutual respect and obvious friendship that comes through during this chat. Many thanks for a great Podcast!
The one and only T . E !
Hope to tell Tommy in person how important his music is for music one day .. and have a chance to see his live show ..
I´ve been to one of his live shows and it changed me as a person and musician. He gave 100% and i think/also thought hes really the G.O.A.T.
Go see him m8
🙏Great Interview. Priceless ,Thank You Such GOOD Boys💛Doing all giving your best as far as see Everytime 😎😎🏅🏅
Hi Mike. Nice to 'meet' you.
Found my way here from your Jump video. (Um ... wow ...)
I first saw Tommy Emmanuel at the Bangkok International Jazz Festival with my then-girlfriend-now-wife, Leanne. Needless to say, we were utterly blown away.
Now we live in Kyiv, Ukraine, and got to see Tommy when he came through a couple years ago. Once again, we were floored.
When I played your version of Jump for Leanne, she started jumping up and down (the way she does when she's all jazzed up about something.)
'He sounds like Tommy!!'
High praise indeed, and very well-earned.
Thanks for your work, and thanks for bringing this discussion into the world.
I'll check out the rest of the episodes soon.
Awesome interview guys. Tommy’s life experience surprises
Excellent video, full of love for music !
Saw Tommy again last week; he was on fire.. This was the firrst time I've seen him with a lighting man and it added another layer to an amazing performance.
Thanke you Mike for this podcast. It was really pleasuse to listen two of my idols...
Thank you from Germany,great Stuff!!
Just saw you guys in Buffalo. Love you both. Thank you! 😊
please do bring him back again in your podcast ! It’s really interesting to see him talk more broadly in topics, not just in music. Really great interview!
Thank you - Mike and Tommy...WOW...wonderful...
Fantastic interview, and thanks for including my questions!
Ahhhhhhhhhh
you are both the best!
The best podcast ever
That's very inspiring that even Tommy Emmanuel has seasons where it's hard to write. Also interesting that he doesn't just try to blast through writer's block and produce something of any quality anyway and force it on us, but waits for something inspiring to come along.
Amazing podcast !!! Inspired to pick up guitar again!!!
Great podcast! And thanks for the mention skatterdreng!😍🙏🏼
#esmann
fabulous just fabulous thanks so much
I shook Tommy's hand 30 years ago and said "I'm shaking the hand of the Greatest Guitar player in the world😀" . He made a funny resistant sound and laughed saying "I dont think so" 🤣😂🤣
well worth the wait, even the warts
Love you guys ! Acoustic gods
Right it comes when it comes to
I was at a Pierre Bensusan show and he requested “more reverb please”
What have i done? Listen one hour two guys talking about guitars? Crazy, but it was so entertaining! Thanx for that 👍
2020-2021 has seemed more like a woodshedding year than a writing year. I'm trying to slowly get back into writing (slowly because great ideas just aren't surfacing--or I'm not in the right state of mind to see the potential of good ideas that do show up).
😍😍😍
Great interview. Those Who Wait is up there with Imagine in my book.
Tommy is such a cool guy. I went to one of his masterclasses in Austin years ago. Afterwords, he was very generous with his time answering questions and signing autographs. Unfortunately, when my turn came my nerves got to me and I stood there like a mute stalker. He just gave me a look like “well are you gonna ask me anything?” and eventually walked off to answer other questions. It was a total Garth moment from Wayne’s world 🤣
Oh btw thank you Mike! This is a fantastic podcast and you’ve inspired us all in these trying times!!
You both share that G.O.A.T. title
perhaps us ordinary folks don't know what's good and what's not, but I guess if it excites us that's the main thing,,having said that you and Tommy could not be inspirational if you tried, it keeps us going ,currently the tune from how deep is the night
Giants.
I am not a writer, but one song inspired me to change only the first verse that reflects my mood in these plandemic times. The song is called Lifeline and it is written by good old Colin Hay. My first lines are, " How to get out of this misery and tell me how the future will be, i just set my mind to sail into the endless sea" for i am a sailor and for the rest its almost the same. I will put it on my YT channel one day and give Colin my excuses. But for me the song is better for the moments i am going through in these deceiving times. So you have to wait a little while because i have just to improve the outcome, for i am not a good singer and guitar player😊🙄 but i hope you will be impressed.
Are you ever going to interview Ewan Dobson, Mike? :D
Did Tommy ever perform together with Guthrie Govan? That's the crossover guitarists all over the world are waiting for!
Tommy is in a different field, although it would be nice to see Guthrie on acoustic. I would love to see Tommy with a different musicians as in a band: bassist, percussionist, keyboardist.
That much guitar power on one stage might too much for the world to handle.
@@ianlarrimore8 I'll take the risk!
How did i miss this?? Tommy E ? He's not of this world.
AWW....why is it the 'seasonal Finale'....does this mean no more podcasts ???
It’ll be back :) as long as you subscribe ;)
