Of course it is….. and like the DWP wont sanction people first and ask questions later is laughable. Checking peoples banks without their knowledge shouldn’t be allowed full stop…. It will start with people on benefits then will spread to everyone else who is working, again under the guise of fraud prevention…. We can already see this happening with people selling on eBay as a side hustle it’s absolutely Bollox… my dad who is in his 70s has a hobby and sells what he makes on eBay for a bit of extra cash… but he’s hardly Donald Sugar…..he has worked all his life and paid into a private pension that he is already being taxed on, now they will want more money off him in tax if he continues to sell his items on eBay…. Like a 70 year old wants to be bothered doing self assessment tax returns every year for the sake of earning an extra few quid….. it’s getting pathetic…. Yet all these big business corporations get away with paying their fair share by moving their companies abroad or using tax avoidance schemes…. Here’s a whacky idea, why don’t they go after them instead of trying to crush the little guy….. oh yeah, I forgot, it’s all about control not fraud prevention 🤨

Like we were told, in the 70’s that we’d be in a new ice age by the turn of the century. So we spent a fortune on double glazing and central heating for our homes. Now we’re told we’re all going to boil in our own sweat.
Like we were told that diesel cars would be preferable to petrol cars. Now they want all electric cars.
I wouldn’t mind betting that a hell of a lot of “public servants” made their money investing in these “new initiatives”. I’m also willing to bet that they have heavily invested in companies making heat pumps and solar panels that we are advised to buy in order to “save the planet”.

According to the reply already posted, they will ONLY get a notification and dig further if a claimant has more money in their account than they're entitled to when claiming benefits. So, if you've got savings over £16k, the bank will notify DWP who will then stop your benefits because you're over the savings limit. It does NOT allow them to randomly check anyone's account (the bank keeps tabs) or what they're spending their money on.

I worked for DWP as a decision maker for a wee while. Left because i had a conscience. Any savings you have keep it away from the account your benefits go into or keep it stashed at home. Never ever tell the bank, even verbally, you've got savings. Split the savings into small amounts in different banks not owned or affiliated with your benefits account bank....

The DWP and other authorities can see every bank account you have because it shows up on a credit check through credit reference agencies like experian as well as car insurance comparison checks and house insurance comparison checks that you make. So they know about all your bank accounts and how many vehicles you may have as they are also linked electronically to the dvla and hmrc and they cross reference the data.
keep your savings in precious metals held by yourself in a safe place or valuable tangible goods that will hold their value like artworks, antiques and perhaps some crypto coins that are still anonymous if you want to keep your privacy.
However, the average benefit claimant and perhaps most claimants wont have enough money to heat their home or eat a balanced diet so having savings above the limit of £6000 where it starts to affect the amount of benefits received wont even be an issue that they are familiar with.

Does this mean the banks will be monitoring those who receive state pension and still work but don't claim benefits? The reference for pension income shows in a bank account as NI number + the letters DWP SP + a DWP reference number. If the bank's software searches for DWP entries, as seems most likely because all benefit payments are likely to have at least that reference in the entry, it will likely turn up all accounts with payments that include that reference. Those who are collecting a pension but are still working and probably paying tax on both those incomes are doing nothing wrong but might initially appear to be benefit cheats and would be investigated. That nothing would come of that investigation doesn't alter the fact that it would be a gross invasion of privacy without any real justification.

That’s taken away our right to privacy and I think that if they can do that then we should have the right to see their bank accounts as well as the Government’s bank accounts.

Great to see the British government doing something in it own interest by ensuring the poor are always kept ever poorer - perhaps it's a good thing making people use their money in society instead of hiding it from helping everyone.

Tbh it kinda pleases me. Worked 25 years since leaving school paying into the tax system.
Become a father at just before 40. Within a year my partners mental health declined and i had to be a single parent giving up my work of 10 years.
Im now sat in benefits getting around 800 a month while im hearing all these lazy ass mothers who have sponged off gov since leaving school are pulling in 2k plus a month
This country is a fucking joke.

Surprised banks have readily agreed to this? Perhaps some will have a rethink? What are they actually "checking" for?? The next thing will be that you have shop in certain supermarkets or cannot buy alcohol/ tobacco or replace an old electrical appliance because its a "luxury item" Staying in a five or four star hotel with free food is a luxury too?? Thank you for all the work gone into this post.
