This is not meant to come off as rude but I’m glad that you in particular decided to participate in this hashtag because you’ve very publicly gone through a lot of change as a creator and a person. I’m glad we got the perspective of someone who has very much seen the “dark side” of content creation and come out the other side.

Wow, Frankie, you really bled all over this video. Some thoughts -- from a 76-year-old-solitary-male-witch-with-37-years-in-the-craft-who-began-as-Wiccan-but-progressed-to-eclecticism. (deep breath) There! My community is RUclips, because I distrust social media -- I'm never sure with whom I'm dealing. I live smack in the middle of a huge population of sincere witch-burners. SSSShhhhhhh..... So, with this mental image:
I can't avoid being bothered when I read "join my online witch school -- 12 easy lessons and you, too, can cast those spells and sling those cards!" I can't avoid feeling suspicious when tuition is required. But here you are with the "worker deserves her wage" argument, and I see your point. My feeble brain is simmering, simmering....
Thank you for this, Frankie. I promise I'm working on it. (Bought your book.) But, hey, consider this -- another word for "imposter syndrome" is "humility." Huh? Yeah? I'm full of this stuff.
Would love to hear your thoughts on this: Ever go on Amazon and search for "witch kits"? For around $50, you can receive a box with "everything" you need to become a witch. Herbs, candles, incense, crystals, altar cloth, assorted tools, etc. Is this a soulless scam? Or is it just the thing for the excited youngster who lives in a swamp hut surrounded by witch-burning crocodiles? No, it may not be ideal, or necessarily desirable, but if it's the only way....
Poor dear. There you are at the conclusion segment, veilless, scratching your head and rubbing your eyes. Not sure which of us has the least money, but I'm on your side, Frankie. I really am.

Thank you for your comment! I also feel off when I see the 12 easy lessons argument. I think I feel a distinction between a catch-all witchcraft course + a need for time to be compensated in a capitalist society…. but also how do we distinguish between something that feels predatory and something that works to create a space for learning? How do we make room for community in free, accessible spaces, but also recognize that many times the people doing that face financial hardship? I have no answers, truly, and feel like no one really wins when things around us are burning and inflation is at an all time high. I do feel like money / tuition is worth it when it’s a topic we care about & want to learn about - when it has scholarships, pay what you can, payment plans - and it’s clear they’re trying to make it accessible without sacrificing financial stability. But also - how do we identify the courses that are predatory & prey on those wanting to know more?
RE: Amazon witch kits - I will always support and recognize the fact that many people are in situations where this is their only option. Do I love Amazon? No - but I love the witches who do not have access to the witch stores I do and are looking for a way to the Craft & a way to express themselves. I support those who are seeking and find this as their way. I don’t know about the people behind those kits - but I do know that it’s hard to play moral high ground when we are all in a shitty position monetarily & when lots of areas of my country are as you say witch-burners. I also support working with what you can outside your door, dollar store candles, grocery store herbs, and in a way want to show people that you don’t need to spend a bunch of money on crystals, herbs, or witch kits to start the path. You just need a rock or a tree outside your door (also sometimes difficult to find), or a bit of a dirt, a local crossroads. I want people to know that not having access to certain things doesn’t make you less of a witch.
I tend to run the rubbing eyes, veil-less vibe often (esp off camera) and hope it didn’t come across being too tired. I did just wash my hair and was avoiding the helmet hair look. Sincerely, thank you for your comment & further extending the conversation. I appreciate you.

@@ChaoticWitchAunt " I have no answers, truly, and feel like no one really wins when things around us are burning and inflation is at an all time high. … … But also - how do we identify the courses that are predatory & prey on those wanting to know more? “ yes to this!!!
Here in Hong Kong, people have caught onto the witchcraft trend and on instagram it’s flooded with courses on how to connect with Freyja, Heka and do western esoteric practices for no small amount (150usd for 3 hours), and I cannot help but think about the authenticity and sincerity of the ones running these courses, especially because none of these people read or speak English, much less the nordic/egyptian languages from which the original sources we have on them originate from.
A part of me is angry, a part of me thinks im being to judgemental, a part of me thinks that maybe these are grifters, but perhaps its the starting point for a handful to actually get into witchcraft.
Your argument on vetting is something I strongly agree with being a way to curb this issue and have some quality control. Alas, life is more complicated than that, especially when you throw the online space into the mix.

frankie i love that you said what you did about social media - i think with capitalism media is very much so centered around ensuring people see advertisements and the way it functions it feels more like a dopamine chaser than a place to foster community - for me personally social media pulls me away from real community thats why i don't scroll i post on my art accounts and writing blog then log off - and another reason i refuse to put anyone on a pedestal no one is above me or below me we are all just lil dude at the end of the day with our own issues and mistakes and talents and love and uniqueness - lil dude theory! I definitely feel the authenticity in your videos! thanks for your continous contribution to the space. your videos helped open me to a whole other path. as an italian american your videos kicked off my reconnection to my culture. this for me was so precious so thank you for that too. just know lots of us see you as fellow human and not some all-knowing teacher like im sure some do, i can't imagine that pressure on a person

It's a sign you are well on your way to being wise when you know that you are not on a pedestal. 7 years is still a beginning. Think of a 7th grader and how they think they are 'wise'. They are well on their way but still quite young. TT is such a quick media that I don't know how much wisdom can be taken away from just a few seconds of something.

I will say when you were asking about the replacement of actual witchcraft for social media, I can say for certain that it's true. I still have issues with it but back when I was 11 (not gonna state how old I am now due to privacy but I am still quite young) I used to watch witchtok comps when they were in their peak without doing any magic whatsoever or even reading any books about witchcraft. In my case I was absolutely calling myself a witch without knowing any of the ground basics except lavender for love, white candles are universal replacement tools along with rosemary, and small bits of deity work. While Im glad to say I finally understand the basic fundamentals of witchcraft and are even looking towards spots of traditional Cornish and new England craft, I can't say it's always been like that. Tiktok is a breeding ground for misinformation and assumptions as youve stated, and while Im not sure if I was a rarity in terms of replacing magic for tt, it is a real issue that I do feel like needs to be addressed.

Thank you for continuing to make these videos Frankie! It’s an absolute shame that youtube isn’t paying you at the value of your work.
I don’t think you realize how important they have been for giving me a better sense of where I want to go as someone in HK who has basically no community and having to forge my own path (something between western folk witchcraft and local folk belief, which in itself has been dubbed the “nameless religion” for being a weird mix of daoism+buddhism+wu shamanism). It’s been a lonely journey, but your videos and others online have really helped broaden my horizons on spirituality and magick
I sent you a little bit on your link, and though the page on streamelements Error 404’d me, it seems on Paypal the payment went through anyways. I hope it helps!
And please Frankie, if you need financial support in the future, do let us know! (I don’t work the capitalist wage slave lifestyle for nothing after all)

I’m thinking about doing some witchy content again here on RUclips since I just moved back to Phoenix and have a place where I can practice more. My cost of living went way up also the last few years in Co and I couldn’t do much either for a while. I e also always used to prefer to just be called a pagan instead of a witch. Even call myself a Warlock sometimes instead of a witch. I don’t miss the witchtok drama.

    • @TalesOfBalkanMagic
      @TalesOfBalkanMagic 5 месяцев назад +1

@@scorpionic-night In a nutshell - it was used by early Medieval Christians to define non-Christians. It comes from the Latin word "paganus", which in a rough translation means "rural", similar to the offensive usage of the nowadays word "peasant". In more recent times the word has been adopted by the new age non-Christians who embraced the term as their own, similarly to the embracing of the term "witch". What I'm referring to is, that early Medieval non-Christians who were polytheistic or animistic or both, couldn't have cared less about the exclusivity of Christianity. A saint for them is just as valid as any other "pagan" god. The mere idea of the polytheistic, animistic, pantheistic, and by extension pagan, worldview is that there are numerous gods and non-human entities. Historically speaking, the problem that pagans, meaning Roman empire, had with Christians was not on the basis of religion, but because they refused to acknowledge the emperor as divine. And "pagans" had no problem with that, since nobody cared whether you worship Isis, Jesus, the Emperor or some grandma that was a big figure in your family. Hope that clears things up.

      @scorpionic-night 5 месяцев назад

it makes them more confusing no offense lol but I do see that pagans are theists and follow heavy forms of dogma? so therefore, as someone who does not believe in any god or gods I couldn't call myself one I'm guessing. i feel like a Pagan would tell me that they don't have a dogma though??? lol someone might have called me a Pagan in ancient times though? see it's confusing me for how it applies to ME lol.@@TalesOfBalkanMagic

The thing about jealousy is so real. I think its helpful to try and find the underlying desire. So for example, i find my envious of your practice sometimes, even rhough I'm a naturalistic pagan - I don't believe in deities or spirits or anything supernatural at all - so it doesn't seem like it makes sense to be envious of a practice that involves things I don't believe in. But I think I'm envious of the connection you feel to your roots and to the truth and authenticity of your practice for you. I came to paganism more recently, and I don't have as much access to ancestral practices for a variety of reasons, and for reasons related to neurodivergence and mental health I find it hard to feel emotionally connected to what I'm doing. I know logically what I believe but it feels fake. So that's where the envy comes from, and knowing that makes it easier to address without just feeling resentful or self-hating or any of that.

❤ Hey Frankie. I too love that you partook in this conversation, especially in regards to cross-referencing information found online. I find it very tiring to see people blatantly teaching "harmful" practices, like burn toxic plants in witchcraft that they've simply copy/pasted from other influencers, without explaining the negative consequences on one's physical health. Other narratives and practices are just as insidious in a sociological or ideological context, but I always cringe when I hear people talking about burning plants with elevated levels of atropine alkaloids (i.e. henbane, mugwort, various nightshades etc) on charcoal WITHOUT explaining the scientific aspects of how that plant will affect your body, and what quantities one should use to achieve a desired effect.
As such, I appreciate your restraint when it comes to showing your practices. There's far more dangers to offering something to Hekate at the crossroads than the metaphysical aspects after all.
I also would love to see more in-depth explanations of plants, their compounds, uses, proper preparations, and disposal to better inform the masses as the holistic properties of their plant allies. For instance, I have a strong bond with pine and its resin. Being able to understand the properties, lores, sustainable harvesting methods, and disposal of by-products is an integral part of our study and practice as witches. If we only show part of that story and expect viewers to "do their own research", then we'll have a bunch of kids setting pine resin on fire and causing major damage to themselves and their environment.
Too many times have I bought a book in hopes of finding concrete manners and practices only to read and slightly tweaked version of the same 'here's a toxic plant that was used in witchcraft, but for whatever reason, I won't go into detail about how it was used, or for what, or what quantities, or the side effects of SPECIFIC dosages from specific preparations'.
What I'm trying to say is that if we really want people to be safe in their practices, we need more recipe books in witchcraft, and less conjecture and hearsay. And that's why I'm reaching out to you to hopefully inspire a new series on your channel. You're smart! You know what to discuss, and what to avoid. It would cool to see you give a 'masterclass' on making oils, tinctures, balms etc.. That's a large part of what cunning folk did, after all. They made medicines for their communities, and that's what we come to creators like yourself to learn

My grandmother is Catholic and I found it interesting to find someone who at the time identified as pagan but followed folk Catholic beliefs. sitting in the equilibrium between Catholic and pagan and addressing yourself as dual Faith is fascinating, and opened me up to many concepts of how to be spiritual that I had never considered before. I was never particularly academic so i struggled with research but you never did the research for me, instead you talked about how to research and what critical thinking is and i just cant thank you enough. you have created such a unique place on the internet, Frankie. @ChaoticWitchAunt  5 месяцев назад +1

Yes!! That isn't to discourage the fact that people with followers COULD have knowledge, but I also think we really need to recognize the fact that social media algorithms tend to be r@cist, f@tphobic, and prioritize social ideas of what "pretty" is - Indigenous & Black creators are less likely to get seen because the algorithm will push them less. I think recognizing this, coming to terms with it, is really important because it allows us to critically think about those who have a lot of followers - are they actually giving good information, prioritizing what is important, and holding space for knowledge, or do they have their marketing down & what it takes for the algorithm to love them?

I'm happy you're able to get some compensation for your efforts, through patreon or otherwise! I've seen similar issues (i.e. people expecting without giving, or only giving with expectation of return that was not offered) in online spaces outside of RUclips as well, and I really appreciate how you spoke on the subject.
I suppose I had question about your book- is it something you wrote because it related to the instructional role you felt forced into, or is it something you were excited to create?

Honestly, my book was the thing I felt happy about creating! I do feel like I disagree with some elements of it now - I've grown and changed - but I was very passionate about writing it and was very excited to do so. I feel like if I went in and made edits now, I would like the outcome of the book more - but I still am very proud of it.

I dabbled in witchcraft and still think it's cool. My mom threw my tarot cards in the trash a few years ago. Just yesterday she told me witchcraft is bad. She's a Catholic. YESTERDAY I told her some Christian Witches exist and she told me, "That's really not possible to be both." Also she ended the conversation by gaslighting me. People aren't kind. People know that they are talking to someone real when they comment online. They also know that they won't face consequences that they might face in real life if they were to say it to your face. I'm an atheist who is interested in witchcraft and I am an ex-Catholic (baptized, confirmed and all that jazz). Some Catholics will hate me because I exist and think about things like witchcraft in a positive way. LOL anyway I'm a new subscriber and you seem cool.

I can relate to the dual faith thing. But not really from a pagan perspective because thats not my experience, but what you said pertaining to that made realize that I am in dual faith spiritual space in my journey. Do you ever find it uncomfortable? Im still trying to figure out how i got here.

I’m curious on your thoughts about TikTok potentially being removed and where do you think those “creators” will go and would it change other social media platforms when those people try to come here or instagram or whatever. I was just thinking about this listening to your responses on social media. I just love this long form more educational videos. Anyway probably irrelevant. The conspiracy theorist in me disagrees with the reasoning behind this government latest ban even though I never cared for TikTok.

I like your background music however it is too loud and competes with listening to your voice. Just turn it down a couple of notches so your information can be better heard. Blessings.

Hey Frankie, I’ve been watching for a long time and love your content :)
I’m looking for folk practitioner perspectives on the use of words and incantations in magic, for a paper I’m writing to be made public for the community. I know you’ve touched on these being a sort of link to past practitioners, but what are your other opinions or beliefs about the power of sound and words?
Thanks for reading and any response you can give!

Great question! Honestly, I would recommend Dr Angela Puca's paper on the Tradition of Segnature to best answer this question in regards to Italian folk magic!

Allow me to begin with authenticity.
It is diferent to talk to you and to the Director of the CIA.
My story is long and violent, difficult and heroic, but that's the bad part.
I am 100% authentic, I never lie, not only for pride, but because I had training.
I am not an impostor, and I have never wver used nobody or anything to scalete in social status.
But I do understand your doubts and that is not a problem at all, you wont be judged or treated disrespectfully.
In war, I use strategies, but I fight mass murderers.
I am the World Leader Of The Antifascist Resistance.
My life is violence and pain.
We are the mortal enemies of nazism.

I'm glad that most paywall hidden content is for those who want to dig deeper because some of us are still poor 🥲 But also: content is not easy to make, it's a job and you should get payed for it
