It’s a big deal when someone as gifted and revered come and play one of his many hits with you and your fellow musicians. Paul Simon, one of the greats. I’m happy he’s still here with us.👍👍🇨🇦
JERRY DOUGLAS...Just THE most talented & God gifted DOBRO PLAYER on THE ENTIRE planet. Hope PAUL SIMON realized this moment in time. The entire band... IS SUBLIME.
This song is truly a sequel. It isn't supposed to be the same song as the original. Listen to the words that Paul added to it. It is a beautiful, soulful, poem to the past. A Boxer who's now an old man. What a gift. Thank you Paul Simon. You are an American legend and a treasure.
Check out Pauls recent audio book with Malcom Gladwell, talks a lot about how he has adapted his lyrics to who he feels he is at various points in his life rather than when he wrote the songs!
"The years are rolling by" was part of the song as originally written. Record company thought the song was too long and said cut a verse, and then they replaced it the instrumental.... Go figure....
I feel sorry for those of you who say such disrespectful things about Paul Simon. When we get older our voices change. He is one of the best and brightest singer songwriters of our time and you expect him to sound like he did when he was 25? I had a really good voice until a health problem took it away. Now I cringe when I hear my voice in a phone video. I would venture to say it will happen to you. Listen to Lenord Cohen. He can't sing a lot of his older songs but he knocks out the ones he can. RIP, Lennie. You guys need to give respect to what he did and try a little tenderness for what he does now.
Some of Johnny Cash's best performances were done not long before he died and the roughness of his voice lended extra truth to the songs. You just have to listen with your heart not your critic's mind.
I see absolutely nothing wrong with Paul's voice. Yes, we lose control as we age but he's better than so many younger guys out there screaming and screeching. Those who don't remember Simon and Garfunkel should really take a trip through music history to see what real music and harmonies were like with lyrics that told stories of life in ways we could relate to. Disrespect shows ignorance. That's all I can say.
What a gorgeous version ! Moving and lovely and personal - I want more of seeing you as you sing - I’m missing some of the lovely nuance - whoever you are you ARE that lovely sound
Paul Simon, you are one of my song writing heroes, along with Bob Dylan and John Lennon! Jerry Douglas you are definitely my dobro playing hero of all time!
pure, beautiful miracle greatness. Paul Simon is one of the greatest songwriters ever, and his songs live on and expand and greatness. Few people have ever touched my heart more than this man with song, and those songs are eternal.
Glad I stumbled across this video. I've revered Paul Simon's unique music and distinctive songwriting since I first heard him in high school, in 1965. His music was the soundtrack of my early adulthood. I heard The Boxer and Bridge Over Troubled Water while on leave from Vietnam, and secured an open-reel (!) copy of the album which I listened to over and over again. Simon's music later accompanied me to college. I learned to play guitar in part because of this music. What a treasure, and Jerry Douglas and the band show such care for the music and respect it is truly heartwarming. Thanks for posting.
What is so cool about this video is that Paul has reinvented his own song here and I love it! I'm so used to the more epic sound of the original, but this version has a more mournful, lonely and soulful, country feel to it. He is a true artist. I also love the Mumford & Son's version (with Jerry). They're all brilliant. A true homage to Paul's original. Good music is good music.
Really have absolutely no idea what all the whiners on this thread are cribbing about? this is a stellar performance by one of the greatest Maestros of our times. He's not 22 anymore folks - don't expect him to sound like he is. having said that this rendition was as flawless as it could be. don't forget it was probably captured on a small handheld device from someone in the audience. Not the best way to capture and reproduce what went down. Immense respect and gratitude....
with all respect ot the musicians involved, it’s the accompaniment that isn’t needed, except maybe the chorus. Paul’s voice and expression is fine. He’s expressing the great original mood of the song. The other guys are just doing generic, if accomplished, musical decoration, which is really not needed in a song with a singular point of view.

"Now the years are rolling by me, they are rocking easily I am older than I once was And younger than I’ll be But that’s not unusual No, it isn’t strange After changes upon changes, we are more or less the same After changes we are more or less the same" Actually these verses are included in the original song but cut by Paul in the commercial release in the 70's.
@slimshadyjiggy He's been singing non-stop for over FIFTY YEARS...I don't know of ANY performer who's going to sound as good as they did when they were younger. Even if his voice was in tip-top shape...he's up on stage with country artists so he's GOING to perform it differently, PLUS, he WROTE the darn song so I think he can perform it any way he wishes. The man's amazing.
Great camera work on a wonderful performance. Kudos to the audience who was actually listening to the performance instead of interrupting with pointless applause in the middle of the song.
A very enjoyable version of probably my favorite Simon tune. Thanks for posting. Check out the performance of this song Paul and Art did on the Letterman show.
Paul Simon has more music in his little finger than most of you collectively have in your whole bodies. He's forgotten more about music and arranging than you'll ever learn. I just watched his concert and this tune with Jerry from the Hard Rock Calling concert in Hyde Park, London from 2012 and their performance was hair-raising.
People have to learn to listen to a song in it's totality. Listen to all the muscians and how they feed of each other. I heard a nice groove, good vocals and nice dobro.
Total magic. And how great to hear the original "missing" verse: ~| "The Boxer" was originally written with a verse that is not present in the Bridge Over Troubled Water version: Now the years are rolling by me They are rockin' evenly I am older than I once was And younger than I'll be; that's not unusual. Nor is it strange After changes upon changes We are more or less the same After changes we are more or less the same This "missing" verse was performed by Simon & Garfunkel when they went on tour in November 1969 (this version of the song is included on the Live 1969 album), and Paul Simon when he performed it solo after the duo's breakup. Simon & Garfunkel also performed the "missing verse" on Saturday Night Live in 1975 and when they reunited for The Concert in Central Park in 1981, and on Late Show with David Letterman. (Wikipedia)
It's not a new verse...it was originally written into the song but it never was recorded for S & G's 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' album. It IS on their 'Live 1969' album, and their 'Concert in Central Park' album from 1981. Paul has since performed it that way many times at his concerts...seems fitting when you really listen to the lyrics :)
"The Boxer"is a folk rock ballad written by by Paul Simon in 1968 and included a verse not present in the "Bridge Over Troubled Water "version. (Wikipedia)
Not a new verse. Was in the original song. Simon and Garfunkel sang it at the Central Park Concert 1981! Just that Paul rarely sings it when playing with his full band. Great performance . .
Not since Art Garfunkel has a voice accompanied the brilliant Simon (failing voice or not) like Jerry Douglas' dobro. He makes it sing, and oh-so-sweetly.
oh they DID come to UK.... alas its a long time since i could take the train and the strain to London for a concert.... Mr Douglas bring Mr Simon the The Bridgewater Hall....xxx
Sorry to disagree but the original song was written in 1968 and included the "Missing Verse" This was omitted from the recording of the single (1969) and the album release (1970) Also in "The Harmony Game "DVD 2011 made about the recording of BOTW Paul said "Artie wrote a little instrumental section and it was really lovely so I said lets put it in and take that verse out.."
By the way. The Bass player through things off track halfway through and caused Paul to augment his lyric melody to compensate. Bass was reading chart and as often happens with impromptu performances had some trouble. Obviously 'the Boxer' is not normally on his radar.
Paul's song. Made a million bucks. He's playing with Jerry Douglas, world renound dobro player in what appears to be a small venue.. He can do it any way he wants. The neg comment really bothers me. Expand your horizons, jackass.
He can sing fine all things considered. The problem is the band are all playing different arrangements for different phrasings he uses to sing the song.
Seriously? People actually disparaged his singing? WTF? I'm 73, learned to play and sing this when it came out in 1970, so YOU do the math! I can play it better now, but my voice...?
I did not know "The Boxer" was on the "Graceland" album. LOL. Definitely got that sound to it. Yeah it's a different interpretation, but if Simon can't do it, who the hell can?
