How To Make A Derailleur Hanger Alignment Gauge Tool
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- I show how to make a cheap DIY derailleur hanger alignment gauge similar to Park Tool's DAG 2.2. This tool is used to straighten and align a bent derailleur hanger which can cause problems with shifting. This tool is meant for steel frame bikes with integrated hangers.

Great thanks 🙌
So great RJ! Local recycler charged me $0.65 for sweet square aluminum post from a 10'x10' tent. Bolt Depot online had variety of correct bolts and drill bit you specified. local metal artist cut the square tubing, drill presseded the holes, and even sanded down the edges for my largest spend - $10. Built two tools, one for me and one to give to my local bike tool co-op; Community Cycles. All is good in the bike world.
You are truly a worthy successor to Sheldon Brown(RIP).
Learned tons from your videos
This is beautiful. Yes.
Thank you so much! You made this a very simple project that worked perfectly, and saved me a few days ride time and a few bucks to boot.
Ohh wow that's very useful tip & hack. Thanks RJ
Love your work, these tools that you don't need often and can make yourself are awesome
For people who are asking, you can get 10mm drill bits online at places like "Drills and Cutters", and 10mm-1.0mm pitch bolts at McMaster Carr (online) or Home Depot. No, I do not work for any of these people. They also have the 10mm-1.0 nuts. The 25/64 drill (more common than you'd think at a hardware store) is only .0035" off from a true 10mm, so you are fine with that because once it is tight, it's not going to wobble in and out from the wheel.
very good , thank you very much
The best wonderfull tool i haven t seen ever in youtube thanks a million for your video. From morocco
I'm going to go build one right now!
Hola!!! Saludos desde República Dominicana, excelente video, voy a crear uno de esos para mi MTB la cual tiene el cambiador trasero torcido. Gracias!!!
Wonderfull video . Very very good explanaition and a clever way to make your own tools . Thank you ver much and please go on making more videos like this one
My dude, I really appreciate your videos! Making maintaining my bike easy and affordable! I really dislike how cycling has become so expensive for quality maintenance. I always rather do my own repairs/maintenance and these videos are a huge help to do the more technician skilled repairs.
Park tool must not like you anymore.
Sensational. 🤘🏻👍🏻
Thank you for this!! Very helpful
I tried this and it worked perfectly. I couldn’t find a bolt with that thread so I used an old axle. Thanks for the idea appreciated.
I too couldn’t find the right screw in my workshop so I used a derailleur screw. Wish I’d read your comment first, now
I have to go back and remake it with an axle. 😅
super video. this helps a lot, thanks
Mate, this is exactly what I was looking for. I looked at buying one but the price is a little more than I was willing to pay. I also just happened to have some square bar here that I almost threw out. Brilliant idea so thanks very much for putting this up.
great idea RJ - i bailed at the idea of spending $100 on an otherwise simple tool you might use a cpl time per year. Surprised you didn't go the whole way and build in the slider / datum rod on the rim end of the tool - that would be A +.
Not necessary and adds cost and complexity.
For all DIYers., my hangers don´t have M10 1mm treads... Made the tool and found really nice bolt for this, but didnt work. So i had to go with a bolt from an old derailleur. Worked, but not 100%.
Almost all hangers have this threading. It has been the standard for a long time. Some very old frames might use something different.
@@RJTheBikeGuy I Have a S-works Enduro -18, and a Santa Cruz Hightower -18. With Eagle XO and Shimano XT derailleur. Didn´t fit none of these.
Should have. Maybe your bolt wasn't M10 with 1mm (super fines) thread. That has been the standard for over 40 years.
@@RJTheBikeGuy No, for sure. I bought the bolts over desk from a hardware store. Was supposed to be the 1mm thread. I will go back and buy another. This time ill bring a hanger to match!.
Just wanted to shout out for the rest, that its not the standard M10s.
Thanks for great videos!
You said that the hanger trued at about 8 1/2 mm. Didn't you mean 8 1/2 cm?
Unless that 10mm bolt was the size if a baseball bat...
Probably.
yeah, I was thinking RJ,you must have the best eye sight in the world,to be able to see at a glance 8 1/4 mm from 8 or 8 1/2 :-)
Listen to what I mean, not what I say.
I was wondering that too. There's a Park Tool video where they mention the runout at the rim should not exceed 3mm ruclips.net/video/tXfvW0L3iLM/видео.html . Thought RJ was maybe just measuring to the nearest cm unit in mm. Sounds like it was cm per RJ's comment above though. I guess this video just shows a more coarse adjustment than in the Park Tool video.
It was really hard to find someone that sold metal rods, squares, L shaped, plates in my country, we don't have Home Depot, and the only big store similar to it does not sell such materials.
Anyway, I found an old man that sold all kinds of shapes of metal in his building material store. The square rod was 100 Lek/metre. ($1/metre) :P
Great, useful, video.
Hey RJ. Thanks on this one. I just made one using a 25 mm sqaure tube. I could not get m10x1 bolt so took an old rear hub axle, cut it a milimeter above the end of the thread on the inside where the locknut could stop. Used two cones and locknuts on both ends and it works perfectly. The most important thing is this drill the holes perpendiculary. They cannot be skewed. Otherwise this tool is pointless because it won't be on the same parallel plain as the hanger when screwed in. However I found dificcult to allign my hanger. I bend it really firmly, it flexes but returns back to the original shape.
If you don't have a drill press, couldn't you use something like this:
Milescraft 1312 DrillBlock- Handheld Drill Guide?
Maybe.
imperial measurements are ridiculous 25/64 lmao (p.s. great video)
Considering we live in 21. century.
God forbid we switched to units of 10! That would be WAY TOO practical
As much as I hate imperial units, decimal measurements are not exclusive to the metric system. Machinists always use decimal sizes, in 0.001''.
in the UK its still common to ask for a bit of wood say 25mm x 25mm x 2 yards!
what's ridiculous about it? it's just 1/64" bigger than 3/8"
First! I win!
RJ The Bike Guy of course lol
omg you beat me!😂
Whoah! You aren’t Mismag822!
There are pictures on my FB page.
I was like "ugh I hate people that say first" then I was like oh! It's rj! Lmao
Holy crabapples!! You just saved me $120.00 worth of work from the local bike shop... A simple home made alignment tool like that one you just built is a definite must have! Something all of us backyard bike mechanics need that won't clean out my bank account to build. 10👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻....
you demonstrate an uncanny imagination and creativity ( translation: awesome dude)
You are so Great!
love it
Great video, I like it. Just made your headset removal tool for a khs 1996 Montana descente renovation.
If you are real cheap like me. Take off the garage door opener arm, use the straight section and the bolt and nut, attach it to the derailleur hanger to do the alignment. Put it back to the garage door opener when done. It's not perfect. But good enough for cheap bikes.
RJ’s videos on solving bicycle issues are among the best. His solutions, easy to understand and practical, have helped solved a number of my bike issues. Making an improvised derailleur hanger alignment tool is one. As I do not have the necessary tools to drill holes on metal post, I used ready cut PVC pipe following RJ’s idea. Though it’s a little cumbersome to use the improvised alignment tool I made, the hanger has been aligned anyway and gear transmission has become smooth.
Thank you RJ for your simple but great idea. 👍👍👍
Great idea! IKEA gives away 1 meter measuring paper tape. I'd cut off the metric half of the tape and glue it to your tool shaft.
What purpose would that serve?
It makes sure that you start your ruler at the same point on the shaft for all 4 measurements.
The hanger does not screw in at the centre of the wheel's rotation, so you need to measure from different points along the shaft.
Just wanted to leave you a note thanking you for the alignment tool specs...I thought my derailleur was just a wee bit out of alignment...I built a tool following your specs just for fun (identical, in fact) and learned that my derailleur hangar was, evidently, pointing somewhere near the landing site of one of the Apollo missions. It's fixed, and the shifting is now seamless. Many thanks!
That's a great hack RJ appreciate all your videos, I bought a used 2009 Gary Fisher and used a lot of your videos to tune her up, she rides a lot smoother than when I bought her thanks.
Great videos, right to the point, I learnd so mutch watching them. Thank you.
Greetings, Mirko
Great video, thanks. I made the tool this afternoon, straightened the hanger and fixed my shifting problem. Note: I used it on a replaceable aluminum hanger, not a steel frame bike with an integrated hanger. I assume there a limited number of times you can do this without damaging the hanger, but I didn't have much to loose since I'd need a new hanger anyhow. It was only out a couple millimeters.
Ok, ex bike shop mechanic from the 80's-90's here and I just put on a new Ultegra 10-speed R Derailleur, new Ultegra chain, cleaned the cassette cogs, cleaned the Ultegra shifters, and rerouted the cables. After adjustment the bike shifts like crap and is really sensitive and touchy. The hanger alignment looks a little off and I was just about to buy a tool and ran across this video. I'll have to make one of these. Great info!
How did you get on?
great video. You mean cm not mm I guess.
Easier to use an adjustable combination square for the measurements but that would cost a bit more if you don't have it laying about. This is all about economy!
Hello RJ , yeah is me bothering You again ,so I want to understand this part properly all rear derailleurs hangers have the same thread 10MM x 1mm pitch ,thank You for Your answer and time ,take care and be safe
Almost all have 10mm x 1mm.
RJ is a real hero. Because of him didnt go to the bike shop anymore for the last few years, and built 4 randonneurs in the meantime. Gr of the west of Ireland
Just made my own version from materials laying around my workshop. Couldn’t find a 50mm bolt so I used an old derailleur screw. It meant I couldn’t move the arm all the way to the 12 o’clock position as the QR screw was in the way due to the shorter length of the screw, but I could get it as far as 10 o’clock which was sufficient to measure the vertical alignment. My gears are now shifting perfectly after an accident which bent the hanger quite seriously.
Thanks for the video, it was exactly what I was searching for ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Didn't you mean 8 1/2 cm?
no 85 mm
@@matthiasriebe5938 Which are are the same thing :) And he is measuring cm
@@topgundk Hi Michaeal, true, he was measuring in cm but he was talking in mm, good job we know what hes saying.
RJ’s videos on bicycle maintenance and repair are among the best. His solutions, easy to understand and practical, have helped solve a number of my bike issues. This video on how to make a derailleur hanger alignment gauge tool is another great help. It solved my bike derailleur hanger issue with minimal cost. Thank you RJ.
En~~Most of time, I just use brake as a reference~
Found your video when I was looking for the thread size of hanger as I was just going to bend it but didn't want to stress the threads. But you made the tool manufacture so simple- why not be more accurate? The money I saved on the tool I used to buy a small bench drill press- something I've needed for years. So now I have a repaired bicycle, home-maid tool, and can actually drill straight holes! Thank you RJ!
Genius! I'll be making this for my upcoming road bike teardown and rebuild this winter. One thing I might do differently is add nylon washers between the metal washers and the steel tube on each side. That should make it be able to turn a little easier.
Might the nylon washers not compress when making adjustments to the hanger?
Yes, I thought about nylon washers, but they will compress.
Ah yes you're right. I was thinking about the axial load along the bolt itself and not about the lateral load while adjusting the hanger. Guess I won't use nylon washers. Thanks for the tip!
This is so awesome I'm probably going to make a couple so I can give one to a friend. Anyone with a bike that is picky about their shifting should have something like this. This is perfect for someone who would have to do this occasionally but I can still see how the sliding bar on the Park Tool version would be better for an actual bike mechanic that would do this all the time.
Bought some bar to make this tool. Didn't realise how much difficulty I'd have trying to find a 1mm pitch M10 bolt.
I ordered one online. I think on ebay.
Excellent. As no welding is involved, i can build it easily enough!
Hey R.J. I'm Ron from Ron's Bicycle Repair in Petrolia Ontario Canada. Currently I have 80 good used department store bicycles for sale. I have been fixing bicycles for about 2 years.
I have yet to see a derailleur that bolts onto the hanger as I see in so many service videos. It seems that most such bicycles these days have a stud in the hanger and mount the derailleur on the stud with a snap ring. I have a Park Tools DAG 2.2 Alignment tool but it seems that I wasted $165.00 as it bolts onto the hanger. I have a tool design in mind for truing up this type of hanger. How about you, any suggestions. Thanks man love your videos. Ron
Well, I would've never thunk about that... I'm gonna make one and check both my hangers... I don't have any shifting problems, but it's just nice to know...
Park Tool: Love you guys, but RJ's got ya beat hands down on this one...
You're saving my wallet big time. Thanks and God bless :)
A wonderful idea, thanks! I don't see why they charge so much for this tool, what a ripoff. You can buy 20 derailleur hangers for the price of the tool.
This is awesome for the do it yourself bike person. However as I was watching I thought ok cost of materials about 10 to 15 bucks. Time spent 2 hours or more. The question is , how much is your time worth?
Thank you for a great idea!
Simple and effective.
Not to nit pick but I think you meant 8cm or 9cm not mm. I was confused at first wondering why you would adjust something that was only out by 1mm.
Cheers.
Cool! Thx from Russia)
I can't believe I've neglected derailleur hanger adjustment . So obvious a problem.
My dera.. hanger is crazy bent.
But trying this would really make my bike unusable...
Just awesome! Willl make one and try to finally fix my Deore deraileur to work decently. It really suck. Brand new on a brad new bike but never worked properly. The 6-year Acera on my Rockhopper in the other hand, is still just perfect, even after lots of sand, mud, rocks and dust. And the bike never went to a shop for any maintenance.
Good job saves me $50 (cheapo off ebay) especially since i already have all the parts..
I can make that tool, thanks RJ. Could the derailleur be bent instead of the hanger?
I just noticed that my derailleur is bolted directly onto the rear axel, ( it's a 40-year-old mountain bike ); so I can not adjust the hanger, because it looks like it doesn't have a hanger?
fantastic.
very hard to warrent $80 for a tool when your only going to use it ONCE on a $150 bike.
Solução excelente!
From BRASIL.
Well, guess I used the wrong pitch thread. Basically f*cked up the thread in my derailleur hanger. Still managed to screw in my derailleur with great difficulty by using a different derailleur with more intact threading as a tap and managed to forced it in and it looks like it's still tight but man, let this be a warning for everyone trying this out: don't just use any old bolt! Look out for the correct pitch on the thread!
Thanks for posting this video. My derailleur and hanger are one unit and attaches to the bike via the hub nut. Can't separate them without taking the derailleur apart. I think they're referred to as a non integrated derailleur. It's almost like it can't be aligned with any kind of tool. I wonder if there's a way to align this type of derailleur.
Amazing video! I'm going to do one myself. I don't have a drill press so I won't be able to drill the holes perfectly straight. Do you think it's better to drill 11mm hole so that washers straighten the bolt in the tube themselves?
Tq for sharing. Love it. I'm subscribing to your channel now.
If, like me, you are too lazy to even make this tool but still need to fix your derailleur hanger, worry not! A wheel bolt is the same thread size as the derailleur bolt. Simply thread a spare wheel onto the derailleur hanger, and using a tape measure, or by eye (lazy way) use the leverage of the wheel to bend the derailleur hanger back into alignment.
Yes, this is a very rough and ready way but I used it last night on my steel bicycle and it improved it immeasurably 😏
Nice simple alternatives thanks for those, I will be using the spare wheel idea later today and looking at making the tool later. Some vids like this one deserve the option of more than one thumbs up.
It would be a good idea to first make sure your rim is trued. Second, maybe using some strong neodium type magnets glued to the alum. shaft and then use it with steel ruler.
Love it, have all the materials in our shop. As luck would have it I was given a bike with a bent hanger a rew days ago....thanks
I was just considering making a tool like this. Great timing. I think it is advantageous to have a bit of play in the hole so that if the axis is not perpendicular to the face plane, it doesn't matter. Thanks
Dude .. thanks ! earlier i wrote a comment from your video on how to strainghten a hanger you made and ask you to come over and bring your park tool .. Go ahead and cancel out this video was L perfectO ! ! ! ... , haha !
Nice video, a thumbs up & subscribe from me. Just one point, as several people have picked up on, the number 1 on a metric rule is 1 CENTIMETER or 10 MILIMETERS, when you said 81/2 mm, it was actually 81/2 cm OR 85 milimeters. I live across the pond & when we went metric (I was 21) so I was used to feet & inches. I consider myself lucky as I can use both types of measuring. keep practicing with the metric stuff, you will soon get used to it. Thanks again for the video.
Thanks Allan, I was worrying I was the only one nitpicker around... I scrolled down and down the comments, hoping that maybe, just maybe, someone... ;-)
Phew, thanks man... : )
PS: But then again, I'm a "metric" person, and tad on the "Asperger side", so...
Hey thank you for doing this video. I will try to make one
Being a bike mechanic in the US must be frustrating, switching between metric and imperial all the time, not being able to find tools and fasteners in metric. Oof
So far, the best bike maintenance channel. Best regards!
After I made the tool and used it on a derailleur hanger (carbon frame) I realised it's centimetres, not millimetres, you're dealing with.
That this contraption would work to such precision is dubious; but better than nothing.
i have a 21 speed aluminum bike with a tweaked integrated hanger. it shifts fine through the speeds it will go into. it wont go into 7th gear anymore is there any way i can fix this or is it just going to be an 18 speed till it craps out?
Great tool but not millimeters but centimeters (8.5 cm = 85 mm), congratulations!
Fab fab fab...no nonsense just great stuff, making one tomorrow....
Great advice, nice and simple 👍 think you are saying mm when you are measuring in cm
just what i'm looking for
Great idea. I should have thought of that, but my mind is too highly trained... lol
Im totally making this tommorow.Thank you dude.
Could've used a zip tie to gauge the distance from the tool instead of fiddling with a ruler.
Give this video a "Super Nice!"
2021 I used the other method it worked ok but needs more tuning but the shifting id ok for now, Thanks.
Must be annoying not to be able to get metric drill bits. Nice work though!
Very helpful. Thank you, RJ! Why is it only meant for integrated hanger frames? It seems like that tool is also used to revive a bent aluminum hanger too as straight up replacing them is $30 or so.
That is what I was thinking of getting it for. But by the way, you can often get hangers for about 5 USD on aliexp. This tool can be had for 60USD from the same source. I am torn. I keep dropping my bike and bending the hanger.
Correct alignment even of a bolt on hanger relies on the frame that the machined hanger is getting bolted onto is correctly aligned. Attempting to bend alloy hangers back works but sometimes they snap. Most can take tweaking with a tool for initial set up however.
Hangers are designed to break or bend before the frame.
DERAILLEUR HANGER ALIGNMENT GAUGE TOOL NICE THANKS I HAVE A CAMPY TOOL CABINET BUT I WAS ENTERTAINED
hate to deprive you of enthusiam , but you can get these for ˜$10-15 on ebay
Really cool tool, I'm going to mike my own too. Do you need to readjust the the derailleurs after you aligned the hanger ?
Probably
Any suggestions on remedying a derailleur cage itself that is not straight?
.
