I thought that plane looked like an old Southwest plane but I looked up the tail number at it actually started life as an Asiana Airlines plane, then spent some time in Brazil, then went to Greece for a bit and finally making its way into a Canadian airline's fleet. Interesting.
Kelowna and the surrounding area is one of the biggest vacation areas of Canada. It is pretty much mostly a tourist area of BC. Lots of cottages and expensive villas and vineyards dotting the rolling hills with the lake as a backdrop. Most of the tourists come during the summer of course but it being Canada it’s also a place for winter activities as well.
I had a friend that had some property with several cabins near Silverton on the Slocan river spent many summers up there gorgeous mountains & glaciers.
The Okanogan and surrounding area are starting to get a reputation because of the fire hazzards during the summer months. I cannot remember the last time the area went a whole season without thick smoke at some point . I use to drive tour buses through there in the 80s and 90s and it never use to be a problem.
@@thearsenalmisfit2414 yeah I remember several years seeing massive plumes of smoke in the distance or thick smoke where I was at the smell so bad that made iothers and myself sick, the red flag warnings, we were never told to evacuate but I'm sure we were close a couple times.
Its a huge tourist area here during summer in regular times. Honestly I still get surprised how many people come tour this area in summer because usually we're socked in with smoke.
I'm retired now, but 30-40 years ago I was in the air a lot. The 727-200 was my favorite, I loved the DC-9/MD-80 family with that 3/2 seating, and I really liked the Southwest Airlines 737-300's with their big ovoid engines. But the favorite? Had to be the beautiful 727-200; it was so radical looking when new. I always wanted to fly on a VC-10 and never got to; another truly beautiful airliner.
What perfect timing to review Air North! I am flying with them for the first time on Thurdsay from Edmonton to Whitehorse! Thanks for the lovely review Noel! Glad you came to our wonderful, beautiful country! :)
Noel, also need to point out that most of the travel on the route is done by Yukoners going to Kelowna from Whitehorse or Vancouver to Whitehorse. Due to the status of The Yukon at the time of your trip, there was very little travel being being done. I have done this route before and there wasn't a spare seat to be found. They have just announced a new flight, one a week beginning May 2022, to Toronto via Yellowknife. So if you wanted a longer flight on a classic...cheers.
Noel the first video I saw was with round about 2,5 years ago! You had 12.000 folowers. I was one of the first person who sad you are the guy for Trip reports and now you are a very big person. I saw all the Reports and I love them all. It is so amazing what you are done. Thank you so much.
I still recall my last flight on a DC-8 (UA BDL-DEN). That had to be 1981 or so. Loved that plane for its big windows and authoritative liftoffs! Also loved the 707 and 727 as a kid. The DC-9 and it’s descendants were more of an acquired taste that I eventually developed. But I’m with you: fly em while you can!
Been on every Air North type, multiple times, except the DC3. These birds aren't going anywhere for a while. Nice to see some familiar faces. Hope you enjoyed Canada, as you can see, we are not too backwards from the rest of the world 😉.
As someone who was born and raised in Kelowna, it’s always interesting to see the perspective of someone who’s visiting for the first time, and I have never heard “Canadian Las Vegas” before hahaha I love it!
Same. Raised in Coldstream but live in Kelowna now. On his Vernon shot I actually almost saw my the house I grew up in. Love seeing major travel RUclipsrs travel through the area. And same never heard this city/area be compared to Las Vegas haha! I got a good laugh when he had that still shot of the cannabis/liqour store cause I live in that complex. People seem to get really infatuated by the combo of a weed/liqour store.
Great vlog as always! FYI every single Boeing aircraft has their «Airframe Information Number» stamped on a metal plate just above your head when you walk thru the left front door. It will show type of aircraft, DOM, and some FAA stuff I think. So you do not have to look in your seat pocket, because now you already know! I agree with. I love to fly on the soon to be extinct aircraft! Enjoy your stay!
I have a friend who lives in Kelowna, so I know it's a large and lively place with a bustling economy and lots of things to see and do in a postcard landscape. My friend loves it there, he considers it a privilege to live in such a fantastic place.
It truly is beautiful area. Especially North Okanagan where I grew up, the Vernon/Coldstream area. I did the quick 45 min hop and moved to Kelowna, ill probably be priced out eventually but I felt it was a privilege to grow up here.
Those blue leather seats reminded me of the early Southwest planes. There was an airline out of MIlwaukee in the 80s and 90s called Midwest Express. Same blue seats but only 4 across. It was such a sweet airline. Sad what brands have been lost or sold to others.
It could be an old Sun Country 734. Don’t know if they ever flew those but all the 737s and 738s I ever flew with them had those dark blue leather seats in an all coach config.
Found your channel, and as a Yukoner, I immediately had to see if you tried Air North. I’m a bit disappointed you didn’t do a real run on Air North and didn’t get the REAL experience with them! The short city sprints aren’t what Air North are known for. If you take Vancouver to Whitehorse leg for example you get treated to what makes them great- their hospitality! Air North always prides themselves on serving a free meal on all long flights (made by the local bakery), free (non alcoholic) drinks, and the locals favourite- a homemade warm cookie at the end of the flight! There’s a reason we locals choose Air North over Air Canada whenever possible. I’m in no way sponsored or affiliated with them, just a Yukoner who’s flown with them since I was a child. They’ve always been the best airline to fly with. In truth… the last time I used them was bringing my mom home from Vancouver after her cancer surgery this January. We booked a 3rd seat so she’d have extra space so people wouldn’t bump her surgery site and I’d have room to care for her needs. They called us before flight asking why we booked an extra seat & who it was for, as I only booked 2 names. Once I explained the situation… they refunded me the seat. They then arranged to have a wheelchair ready at both sides of the flight so mom didn’t have to walk, and someone to assist me. I didn’t ask for any of that, but their kindness was astounding. Mom passed away a month later. I’ll never forget that act though. That was true compassion. Anyways. It’s still cool seeing things and places I recognize on your channel. Your videos are really well done.
It's super exciting getting on a plane you've never flown on before. I remember flying on a United B727 & prior to boarding only got a glimpse of the nose & thought it was a 737! It was only when I sat down in the window seat & looked at the wing & saw no engine the penny dropped!
Mildly surreal to see a big travel RUclipsr not only fly the specific route I've done many times before into my former home airport, but then catch a cab directly through/into my former neighbourhood! (I've run out to that little plaza with the DQ and the cannabis shop many many times.) Hope you enjoyed your time in Kelowna! At 200 000 people, it's one of the largest cities in the BC interior so definitely funny to hear what you had expected LOL As for why I flew Air North YLW-YVR and vice-versa: I was a university student in Vancouver who grew up in Kelowna, and I'm the sort of person who enjoys flying mildly out-of-the-ordinary airlines. It usually turned out to be a few bucks cheaper, too!
Glad you came and saw our beautiful area. I was raised in the Vernon area which was the town you had a shot of on approach with the little runway next to the lake. Ive never heard this city Kelowna get compared to Las Vegas I loved it haha! And you gave me a good laugh with your still shot of the cannabis/liquor store, I live very, very close to that store. People seem to be really infatuated with the combination of weed/liquor in one store. Hope you enjoyed the area, and come back anytime!
My first ever flight was on a Dan Air London BAC 1-11. That was a lovely old bird. When they closed production down, they had been working on a new variant using the CFM 56.
6:20 noel you can still get the chance to fly on a dc9 there is a small airline down in Kenya called African express Airways who fly alot of old aircrafts including THE DC9
9:37 My family worked for Alaska Airlines. Alaska still use this feature on their brand new 737 Max + entire 737 fleet. Most NG and Max 737’s rarely use Pulsing Landing Lights(which you can see flashing on the engine cowling in this video). The landing lights will be on, but also pulse bright/dim between left and right side. Next time you watch a 737 land, if the landing lights pulse from left/right, chances are it’s Alaska Airlines. I’ve rarely seen it on any other 737 operator 👍🛬🔅↔️🔆
I know what you mean about "not being bothered". I could have ridden on a Caravelle and a Mercure, but didn't because I thought I'd get another chance when I made time. I'm still kicking myself!
My first ever flight was at 6 years old on a 707, following on Comets, 1-11's, Caravelle's, 747 Classics, Tristars, DC10s, A300's, Convair 990, DC9's, 727's, 737's, 757's, 767's, Dassault Mercures, Fokker's, Tupolovs, A DC3!, A310, A340, 747-300's, 400's, 777's, 787-9's, Emberaers, Dash-8's, some SAAB thing once, A320, A319, A321, A380, A350, some seaplanes, helicopters, and last but not least used to go over to NY and back by Concorde. Loads of different airlines, most of the main ones & almost always upfront ( as an adult ). So I am blessed really that I was fortunate to fly aircraft from the first jets to supersonic, to today's plastic planes. Never got to ride a Trident, or a DC8 though...I'm now 58 and still LOVE LOVE LOVE flying - from leaving home to baggage reclaim.
Warm greetings from China 🇨🇳 As a native of British Columbia (Prince George YXS); my parents retired to Penticton (YYF) and later to Kelowna (YLW) when it was still feasible. Kelowna is basically a tourism AND retirement destination. For the wine connoisseur, Kelowna is a year-round place to visit. Next to Vancouver (YVR), Kelowna is considered, “Financial suicide”. Thank you for visiting my home province 🙏
Your tempting me to go out of my way now to fly on a classic, not been on a classic since we lost bmibaby, and that ending paint job is really hitting home!
I used to spend summers in Silverton on the Slocan river not far from there my Dad's friend had some property with several cabins, it's more over to the east in the mountains beautiful glaciers have some great memories from there, love those older 737 myself!!
I used to ship to Northern BC all the time with Air North at their old cargo terminal in Edmonton. It was almost like going into a bus station. Very downscale. However, I think they probably focus less on the internal decor and more on the maintenance due to the small remote airports where they fly. I believe their main source of revenue is the types of cargo they bring to northern towns. I don't remember ever seeing them have any history of problems, and I think they keep those old jets because they have great handling in cold, icy, slippery, windy conditions.
Flying on the 737-400 reminds me of my childhood flying on Malaysia Airlines with their then classic workhorse. Last time flying with it in 2012, now I kinda miss this aircraft that is usually synonymous with the 737 Classic and one time probably the largest operator of it in Asia and the aircraft that shape my chilhood love of aviation.
I wonder if Noel has ever taken a train trip on the Rocky Mountaineer since he's been doing so much in Canada. Two levels of service, you ride during the day and get put up in a hotel at night. They've even added a US trip in the canyonlands area. Maybe for a special event.
Bit of a shame about the -200... Canadian North operates one still up to the Inuit communities you visited in earlier videos, but they're supposed to be phased out next year.
Unfortunately, they don’t use it for revenue service anymore. It mainly just sits there and last I heard it’s set to go for retirement. They mainly use their 737-300’s and 737-400’s. They also just purchased 3 737-700’s.
Like you noel I grew up on the classics lamented seeing the 737400 again!!! I flew on them with MARK AIR & ALASKA back in the 90s between PANC, PAJN, KSEA
Noel, the oldest B737-400 I ever flew on was in 2005. This was on Kam Air from Dubai to Kabul, Afghanistan. Cannot believe an airline in Canada flies such an old aircraft.
Noel, you said you hadn't eaten all day. It looked like you passed a bar in the airport. They had beer and, as we all know, Beer is so much more than a breakfast drink!. 😊😊 Will you be visiting Buffalo Airways on your tour of Canadia?
Some of these pretty old 737's in northern canada are equipped with "gravel kits" to shield the landing gear and somewhat engines when landing on very far north unpaved runways. That might be an interesting adventure at some point!
Age-wise, ValuJet had some real oldies, often with original cabin designs and groovy fabrics. As a college student, I assumed the creaky old DC-9s were safe. Now we know differently. Now the oldest and most maligned planes I fly on are CRJ-200s.
My first trip to New York gave me a nice mix of planes, an 737 from Gothenburg to Copenhagen and some Airbus across "the pond", I thought that crossing the Atlantic I wished to travel onboard a 747 so I changed airports in New York from Newark to JFK and got a Lufthansa 747 to Frankfurt, then going home from Frankfurt I got one of the last DC-9´s of SAS to Gothenburg and on that flight we were only 19 passengers in total. Three of four legs SAS and one Lufthansa but fun.
30 years ago used to be a little village in the middle of nowhere, it has changed and grown...btw - 0-ka-no-gan...same name as the lake. pay a visit to Ogopogo, the cousin of the Loch Ness monster, Nessie...
My local airport only has flights to four destinations with mostly CRJ and ARJ aircraft, but with growth in recent years (save 2020), larger narrowbodies are flying in on a more regular basis - earlier this month I got to fly out on a Boeing 717 (aka. the MD-95), which while not the oldest aircraft type in mainline service, I would not be surprised if that type goes extinct within the next decade due to its limited production run and use on shorter, but more frequent flights
I remember Kenosha as a mill town. Some friends and I were there chasing trains(CP used to have a fleet of FM diesels based there). As to airplanes, lets see, DC10 JFK SFO on UA, 727's alll over the place. DC-9 LAX MRY SFO Hughes AirWest. 737-200 LAX FAT SFO AirCalifornia. 707 ELP TUS SFO AA. DC-8 WRI(?) FRF JW(charter). 707-320 FRA LHR TW(this was supposed to be a BA Trident that got cancelled) the 747-200 LHR-SFO PA. DC10-10 SFO-JFK UA. Next year DC-10 FRF WRI(?) (Aircraft took two lightning strikes on the way out of Frankfurt according to the Pilot) Then spent the next 4 weeks knocking about the states on a VUSA ticket/pass on CO. Fun times. Spent the next year ELP-SFO on a variety of flights. Things like on an EA 727-100QC(all passenger on my flight) into ELP or WA 737-200 ELP ABQ. WN(Southwest) here and there. The first two years of airline deregulation created all kinds of interesting routings.
Kelowna is my home city, I've lived here for about 60 years and I have watched that plane fly over my house many times. FWIW: Harbor Air has a float plane flight from Vancouver to Kelowna in the summer time. ( I saw in a previous video that you flew over to Nanaimo and back with them and though you should have done the flight to Kelowna)
Love Kelowna. A few years ago, we stayed at a resort right on the lake & then proceeded to eat & drink our way up & down the Okanagan in many of the wineries. Never did make to Osoyoos as there wasn't enough time. Also, did you research why Air North still flies the old 737's? They use special attachments on landing gear & engines in order in order to be able to take off & land using gravel runways up in the Arctic. This is so gravel is not sucked into the engines & doesn't wreck the landing gear bays. From what I read, these kits couldn't be attached to any other jet aircraft.
@@noelphilips my favourite is the 737-300 I got to go inside one during an air show in 2017 and whenever I go on holiday, I catch the 737-800 because I fly Qantas :D
I have flown numerous times with the aircraft you mentioned and also the BAC111 which if sitting at the rear meant you where behind the engine cowling and deafened lol
29 year old 737-400 - pretty much still a daily occurrence in South Africa thanks to a few airlines that still have them flying around. You know it's a 400 when the button for your reading light is a rectangular slab :D
Awesome location to fly to, but more than anything on this channel love that you enjoy and seek out these aging airliners to fly on. Flew KC-135s (talk about aging planes) for a bit for the USAF, something about a plane that doesn’t have all the automation and has some quirks to it.
I'm a Patreon, but I still wait until Sunday to watch your video. I watch Football (my version- not yours), and then watch your video, and it's time for bed. My last 737 OG was a WN . I It might have been the late MDW-OAK flight and the fan died. The FA's were trying so hard to keep cool on this 4 hour flight.
They have gotten rid of the social distancing in the chairs at the airport. They realized that this rule was ill considered since there is no social distancing on the airplane with passengers sitting in all seats.
Exactly how I feel about missing out (mostly) on the Boeing 747 as I only recently became a aviation geek. The Queen’s days are mostly numbered now, except for freight but in reality only 3 airlines still use this type for passenger…. guess I’ll be saving up for a Lufthansa trip in the near future.
I had the chance of flying in a few United Air 727's and a brand new DC-10 as a teenager in the late 70's .In 1980 I flew in a CP-Air classic 747 (with a big movie screen) from Vancouver to Hawaii. and a ride from Honolulu to Maui and back in the infamous Aloha Airlines vintage 1960's era 737's . from which years later in 1988 the roof would be torn off one of its aging 737 jets (possibly the same jet I flew on years earlier) More recently I flew on a well worn Air Canada 1990 model 767 from Barcelona Spain to Montreal in 2017.
FYI, Kelowna is definitely not ‘Las Vegas North’. You just happened to stay at the one hotel in town that has a casino adjacent to it. Enjoy your videos!
Same here. I actually live in the apartment complex where he had the still shot with the plaza that has the weed/booze store combo in it, which people get really infatuated by.
Anyone who watches this channel gets it and we’ve all missed out on a few planes. For me I missed the DC8 and DC10 and of course Concorde. I would have loved to travel on the VC10 which I think is one of the most beautiful aircraft ever to fly but I did manage to hitch a ride on an iL62 it’s near cousin. I was lucky to travel on most of the Soviet era jets TU134, 154 and a favourite the IL86 where I had to stow my luggage downstairs before going upstairs to my seat. Today I’ve just flown on two Lufthansa aircraft- an airbus 320Neo and a much older Airbus 319 100. The later was better, more leg room and a reclining seat. But yes like you I’d deliberately pick an airline to fly on a particular plane
Very cool flight...totally worth the short ride, the 400's are fewer and fewer...Mentour Pilot has taught us all so much about the systems on the 737's.....so its fun to see them used.....didn't you do the vlog of the cargo/part passenger 737-200 ride in Alaska with the deflectors that keep dirt from gravel air strips ingesting into the engines?!?

Warm greetings from China 🇨🇳
As a native of British Columbia (Prince George YXS); my parents retired to Penticton (YYF) and later to Kelowna (YLW) when it was still feasible.
Looks exciting! Hope you enjoyed the trip :)
I'll never forget a short flight I had back in the 70s on a DC3. On boarding, it was a steep walk up to the seats. And it was really loud.
Wow that sunshine! We haven’t seen that in weeks.
I wonder if Noel has ever taken a train trip on the Rocky Mountaineer since he's been doing so much in Canada. Two levels of service, you ride during the day and get put up in a hotel at night. They've even added a US trip in the canyonlands area. Maybe for a special event.
Check out the Downie Live channel!
@@gerardacronin334 Yup I watched the first half of the trip!
Nolinor has a bunch still.
Beautiful Take off
One thing i v notice about flying here in my own country is its huge. I do enjoy your videos about the difference in planes .
Happy Sundays must mean noel Phillips 👌
Like you noel I grew up on the classics lamented seeing the 737400 again!!!
I flew on them with MARK AIR & ALASKA back in the 90s between PANC, PAJN, KSEA
My fav vlogger is back
Noel, the oldest B737-400 I ever flew on was in 2005.
We need more rachel. Ain't seen her on many videos lately, hope she's okay, and hope you're OK noel. Keep up the amazing work xx
Yay I am finally early for Noel’s video!
Luckily I was able to get a couple of rides on a 737-300 without having to go well out the way, as Jet2 were still operating them until last year
Lots of family in Kelowna..great place. Try the wood fired bakery in town..fantastic German food.
I was in Kelowna myself three years ago. Very nice city👍
Wonderful video per usual. I will have Kelowna on my list.
Awesome video, shame there's such a few of these aircraft out there now. I never got a chance to fly one.
Such a beautiful country is Canada on mt bucket list for sure
Looked like a great flight.
That place looked fantastic, hotel was super modern
It was built in the 1990s but has been completely renovated several times. It has many resort facilities.
I feel like i've seen more 737-200 recently than i've seen -400s which seems kind of backwards. Great video as always.
Friendliest airline in Canada!
There is also an Air North airline in Australia operating Embraer aircraft
Kelowna is my home city, I've lived here for about 60 years and I have watched that plane fly over my house many times. FWIW: Harbor Air has a float plane flight from Vancouver to Kelowna in the summer time. ( I saw in a previous video that you flew over to Nanaimo and back with them and though you should have done the flight to Kelowna)
we have friends in Kelowna, we visited them in 2011
Love Kelowna.
Wow, that sounds like a great time. Thanks for sharing!
@2:05 Carl's Jr makes some of the best fast food burgers out there. Well worth the slight extra expense.
Honestly, 737 family is probably my favourite airliners I cant imagine flying on one :D amazing video Noel!
Thanks a ton!
That's incredible. The 707 (or its variants) is one type I am gutted to have missed.
Awesome views from my hometown airport of YVR Vancouver! Great video, welcome to B.C.!
Great video as always, Noel! I never got to ride on a 737-400. Glad I could enjoy it vicariously through you. Also, go Chiefs!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I lived I Kelowna for a year as a child. My dad did a teacher exchange from Australia.
Loved the Chiefs gear!! Where did you get the inspiration?
They have gotten rid of the social distancing in the chairs at the airport. They realized that this rule was ill considered since there is no social distancing on the airplane with passengers sitting in all seats.
Noel you must come fly on our Qantas 717-200s in AUS before they’re retired in a year!
I know why you like to sit in that part of the plane. On a 757 is the best. My favorite seat.
Flew on a southwest 500 once, pretty odd not having a winglet
Great video as always! Is there a story behind your shirt? Go Chiefs!
I hope it will be flying for a lot longer
Ha omg in 1994 I was 22 I worked for air UK Leisure out of Manchester and we had 737-400 and 767-300 at the time these planes were almost brand new 🙏💕
FYI, Kelowna is definitely not ‘Las Vegas North’. You just happened to stay at the one hotel in town that has a casino adjacent to it.
Enjoy your videos!
Fantastic video as always, Noel!
Many thanks!
Air North is launching Whitehorse-Toronto via Yellowknife next spring
Love your Kansas City Chiefs tee shirt!
Spectacular!!
That is a beauty , just now getting broke in real good.
Ahoy! In case anyone wants to know, this '37 is a B737-48E. Air North's fleet mostly consists of 737-55D's.
Great one Noel. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
I was surprised that the airport had jetways. I was expecting something more remote as well.
Kelowna is my home! It's so so amazing to see you flying in there and enjoying g the area and scenery!
Same here. I actually live in the apartment complex where he had the still shot with the plaza that has the weed/booze store combo in it, which people get really infatuated by.
my friend told me to tell you that ' your chanel is actually being viewed by many airlines and governmental agencies
Interior looks like an old BA 737. The sort that did UK domestic flights.
The rustling of that bag makes my stress and anxiety levels go through the roof!! Horrible sound! 😂
Still a chance to catch a 737-200. Airzim recently D checked one and is using it on the Harare - Dar Es Salaam route.
Buffalo Airways out of Yellowknife has DC3's, DC4's, and the Electra. I would love to see those in your videos.
