2024 Living in New Zealand 🇳🇿 this beautiful Fijian song brings back fond memories of my Mum, who was a sporting champion for their team Aotearoa in 1952. Thanks to The Seekers for making all things possible 😌 for people like me.❤...😊
Alternatively, "Isa Lei" is the Fijian version of a Tongan love song ("Ise Isa viola lose hina") used to court the then Princess Salote (later Queen Salote). It was written in 1915 and was heard by a visiting Fijian sergeant. From there, the Fijians adopted it to a farewell song, but they kept the Tongan melody.[4][5]
@@GreaterGood2024 It is definitely not Hawain, though it is Polynesian. There are no Bs or Ds in Hawaiian. My first thought was that it could be Māori, the native language of New Zealand's first people, believed by many to be the people from whom all other Polynesians sprang. However Wikipedia says it is debated as to whether Isa Lei is a originally a Fijian love song or Tongan. ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isa_Lei ) Perhaps the Tongans wrote the original version and the Fijians popularized it, turning it from purely a love song to a farewell song. Wikipedia has the majestic lyrics of both versions of the song.
When you feel heavy or you feel low don't think twice, go to a Seekers song, and you are healed. There are fewer more wonderful sounds in life than `Judith's voice.
I feel like I've lost an old friend. The Seekers' music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I finally got to see them in Sheffield in 1993ish. Be still, my beating heart. That concert remains one of my favourite ever memories. My heart goes out to all who knew and loved Judith, especially Beverly, Atholl, Bruce and Keith. 💔💖
WOW..Rest In Peace Judith Durham..amazing SEEKERS sung a Fijian Classic to perfection, I hope this is aired over our local radio station..beautiful singing.
Absolutely beautiful. It's interesting that Judith doesn't dominate here. Even tho' her voice is terrific, the guys sing very well and they all blend perfectly.
keith leads opening then bruce does chorus,,athol then takes baritone and Judith just does what comes naturally and gives our ears a treat and yes they did visit Fiji
Wonder if any of them still remember the words and can still sing it like this? I'd bet at least one of them can! What contemporary group would go to the time and trouble to learn the words to a song like this? Then and now these folks are remarkable! Probably wont be fully appreciated until much later, but there are still fans emerging now once they get captivated by the Seekers Sound, thankfully!
I listen to this song ever night it’s so soothing, and Bruce has a very good voice can sing anything along with beautiful Judith. Who sounds like an angel. ❤
This brought tears to my eyes to hear this exceptional performance of this famous love song. We used to sing this piece during my time at Hawaiian Chorus at UH Manoa, this song has haunted me all these days and this performance brought it all home!
Que maravilha! Eu descobri há pouco este conjunto incrível dos anos 60, the Seekers, há poucos dias. Estou fascinado por eles. Eu os ouço agora o dia inteiro, trabalhando em meus escritos. Magníficos.
I remember when our lovely Fijian flatmate, Donita, introduced us to this song in 1966. This was recorded a year later and is a wonderfully, though well sung, performance, notable for not a single Fijian in sight!!!
Thanks for writing down the words for us who aren't proficient with the Fijian Language. I learnt this when it first came out in the 1960's, and learnt it phonetically, and I'm enjoying singing it all over again. The Seekers are just the best - thank you so much for your music for all these years.
RIP Judith the beautiful lady who sing exceptionally well on this farewell Fijian song. Great quartet group who put the best performance in this clip and surely will be a memory that lives on.
I have been listening since it was released end up buying a record back home in Fiji. I played this beautiful our Fijian farewell song many places even at funeral's. this song touches me so much always reminds me back home.
I am 73. Every New Year I set myself a challenge. This year`s has been to learn and play 12 songs from Korean dramas. There is a short version of this in Korean in `Love Rain". It sounds nice in Korean but for me it is better in Fijian but it`s also not too bad in English.
The Seekers ROCK!! Not many bands can take a foreign song and make it their own, also the accuracy in pronounciation is Incredible.. usually takes one a long time to get that part right and well in all fairness. They did bloody Great Job :). Vinaka Vaka Levu Denny for this wonderful video.
This song is a traditional Fijian (a farewell song). It's reported that the people of one of the Fijian islands sang it for Captain Cook back in 18th Cth. Its a great rendition by the (very young) Seekers.
Isa, Isa you are my only treasure; Must you leave me, so lonely and foresaken? As the roses will miss the sun at dawning, Every moment my heart for you is yearning. Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling, Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow; O, forget not, when you're far away, Precious moments beside dear Suva. Isa, Isa, my heart was filled with pleasure, From the moment I heard your tender greeting; 'Mid the sunshine, we spent the hours together, Now so swiftly those happy hours are fleeting.

If I was old enough during those days I would certainly marry that girl, unfortunately I was only 7! Hmm great song sung by great singers and to cap it off the lyrics were spot on on pronunciation! These days we tend to sing two verses only and the rest are fast disappearing, again thanks to the seekers and another of their great tune!
This is one of my most favorite songs. When I was teenager, I heard this song for the first time, sang in Japanese by Japanese 3 ladies unit Three Graces through a TV program "Songs for All" of NHK. As for me, perhaps this video is the one sang in Fizzy, I think, this song in this language let me feel pacific ocean wind, like hearing Tagalog (I can not speak and understand, however.). Sayonara owakare ne Isa lei. Ashita wa funade suru hi ne.....this is the beginning of Japanese lyrics, that I had heard in my junior days. What is sorrow, there can not be found the olden Japanese content of this song broadcasted by NHK, even NHK itself can not retrieve the source video, I heard.

The Seekers finished this Fiji song masterfully. RIP Judith Durham.
OMG... considering the fact that this is an indigenous Fijian song sang in I'Taukei language, The Seekers nailed it!! Fantabulous indeed!! I love it.

Indeed. She seemed like a such a beautiful person and a true friend to them (and they to her).
A beautiful song released the year I met my future wife...now 51-plus years later...I love her and this song...

Not bad at all but the American English accent is apparent in the pronunciation of the 'r'. Fijians like many other Pacific islands roll the r.
Not being a musician at all I'm sitting here wondering how much time did they need to put into this. How do these Aussies even pull this off?

It's actually a Tongan song. Then Fijians sang it and it became more famous in Fiji because it was used for guests and visitors from the royal family
