The Island Line Rail Trail in Vermont [World's longest Bike Path Across Water!]

- Want to ride the longest bike path in the world across water? Then you just need to head to Burlington, Vermont and ride the Island Line Rail Trail. You'll ride along the shore of Lake Champlain, the 6th largest natural freshwater lake in the US. As you ride across Lake Champlain on the spectacular 3 mile long Colchester Causeway you'll have breathtaking views to the east of Vermont's Green Mountains, and New York's Adirondack Mountains to the West. The trail is 13.4 miles long. The southern 8 miles are paved, and the remainder is hard-packed, crushed limestone. The trail was voted into the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy Rail-Trail Hall of Fame in December, 2010. This ride took place on July 23, 2021.
Special thanks to our Local Motion ferry captain for her excellent commentary. - Хобби
Oh, I got to do this trail during my next annual trip to New England. Gorgeous!
It definitely is one of the most unique trails we've been on so far. We rode it in the summer, but I'm sure fall would be just spectacular. I hope you get to ride it soon. Thanks for watching and taking a minute it comment.
You guys are the best.
Thank you for watching and for your kind words.
Love this!! Thank you!
Thanks for taking the ride with us!!
That was great, thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!! We hope to see you again on another adventure.
Thanks for the video, we've been thinking about heading up to ride this trail. Your video shows it is definitely worth it.
Riding out over Lake Champlain is different than any of the other trails we've ridden; and we think worth the trip. Can't wait to hear what you think. Thanks for watching.
I love this trail so much. I ride it every time I get a chance to go to Burlington. Love the flying monkeys...
Thanks for watching.
Yet another amazing ride. Thank you very much!!!
Hi Don, Thanks for watching. We are thinking of heading to the Greenbrier Trail in October since you said it was such a great ride!
@@Adventuresonebikes Outstanding! Let me know when, ok?
@@donweber4992 Hi Don. It will likely be mid-late October. We will certainly try and get a date figured out soon. I just talked Randy into it yesterday -- he thinks we are going to run out of trails if we keep up this pace (ha ha!!) We're also thinking of hitting the VA Creeper Trail. Can you email me at -- adv.on.ebikes@gmail.com --and if you're thinking of possibly joining us we can talk more specifically about dates? It would be a lot of fun to see you and Nancy again.
Oh my, this is heaven on earth!
It is a beautiful Trail. Thanks for watching!
What a nice trail. Now in my list to travel
Hi. Thanks for watching. It is a great ride. We hope to “see” you on our next adventure.
Really enjoy your videos. So fun to ride along. Not long from now I’m going to ride some of the trails you’ve ridden. Hopefully!
I hope you get a chance to get out on some of these great trails. Thanks for watching!
We did this ride a while ago. Back then the bike ferry was a 15 foot pontoon boat with someone selling tickets at a card table. There was misty rain that day, but one of our best experiences ever on bike.
Sounds like great fun! Thanks for the comments. We hope to "see" you on our next adventure.
@@Adventuresonebikes it looks like you've done a lot of rides in our area - Philadelphia. Those are part of "The Circuit," a 700 mile and growing network of bike paths in and around the city.
Looks like a nice trail and I'll put this one on my list.
Hi. This is definitely a trail you won't find anywhere else. I hope you get a chance to ride it.
Just found your videos. I am enjoying them!! You have inspired me to get moving long distance again. My only issue is now that I am older I’m not has thrilled about riding alone. But if I want to tackle some of these trails I have to get over it and just do it
Thank you 🚴
Thanks for watching and for your comments. I hope you figure out a way to feel comfortable riding some of these trails. The Island Line is pretty suburban and there are a lot of people on it - so that should be a safe one. If you take the ferry over to the island that’s a little harder to maneuver alone.
This was absolutely breathtaking to be able to ride along via the iPad.
Thanks for watching, and for your kind comments. It is a unique trail.
Top notch!
Thank you
Nice video Patty!
Thanks for watching.
We did it about 6 years ago. It’s one of the most beautiful trails in the world.
Thanks for the comment. The Colchester Causeway is really something to ride. We hope to "see" you again on our next adventure.
A MUST RIDE TRAIL!
It definitely was a great ride. Thanks for watching.
I did this ride in 2021 when doing a 40th reunion at BHS .. what a gorgeous ride. As a teen, I would try to ride the boxcars on the CV line, but they were usually locked.
Thanks for taking a minute to share your experience. It is a great trail! Thanks for watching.
I Love Burlington, I Love Vermont, I Lover Vermonters..
Definitely a beautiful place
@@Adventuresonebikes You Got That Right, And Beautiful , Nice People Too.
Ese es Vermont.... Esos pueblos son bellisimos
Gracias.
Just found your channel. This is a wonderful video. Thanks for sharing. I live on Cape Cod and I will visit Burlington this summer!
Glad you found us and we hope you have a great ride.
Did you make it to Vermont
@@Timberbeartrail I am
Heading up there in July.just got back from the winter in south Florida.I will definitely ride there!
I did this ride in June 2021 on three hits of acid. Absolutely beautiful and everybody out in the trail had good vibes.
Thanks for watching
WHAT?
Now that sounds fun
I found your video by searching for Vermont Bike Trails. You are one subscriber closer to the magical number of 1000. Great video. I’m inspired to move my GoPro Hero 10 from chest mount to my helmet for a more immersive viewer experience for my Ebike ride videos. I’m looking forward to watching more of your ride videos.
Thanks for helping us get closer to the magic number!! Thanks for watching. We hope to “see” you on our next ride - which coincidentally comes out tomorrow morning.
For sure
@@Adventuresonebikes I do like your video(;
Hope I live long enough to take that ride ❤😊
I hope you get there. Thanks for watching.
Beats the hell of dark, scarey tunnels.
This is a beautiful trail for sure. But, I kinda like dark, scary tunnels too. Thanks for watching.
Had to rent a bike at a little shop in Burlington and all they had was the old-fashioned foot-brake kind. I fell off it when I tried to stop. Anyway, it was late fall when I rode on the causeway so I couldn't make it across the cut, which was frustrating. Love to do it again and to ride around North and South Hero. This was back in 2009.
It's a shame you didn't get to the other side. Glad you didn't hurt yourself on that bad bike.
That looks like such a great ride. I've been to Burlington once; I wish I could get back there again soon. I love that you have the camera on your helmet. I hadn't thought of that. I've done a few biking videos with the camera on the handle bars. The footage comes out smooth, but I'd like to get more scenery around me as opposed to what's just in front on the trail. Are you doing any stabilization during the editing process? Great video!
I did have my camera on my helmet for the first couple of years. Then I moved to the handlebars. I have a flexclamp mount with a gooseneck now - so I can turn it while riding to get other things. That takes all the jerking around that you tend to do with your head when you are watching where you are going and taking video. My husband keeps his on his helmet so we do have that other perspective. Thanks for watching.
@@Adventuresonebikes Thanks for your reply! Happy biking!
I hope I could ride this train one day. Looks exiting. How long is the trail?
Hi Thomas. Thanks for watching. It was a really nice trail and very different from others we've biked on. The trail is about 14 miles long.
I believe the trail to be the old Rutland Railroad right-of-way that eventually led it to Canada.
Thanks for the info. And thanks for watching!
Looks like a great trail. Did you see any campgrounds that connect to this trail?
I believe there was a campground, but not sure what type of camping is allowed there, or what type of camping you want. I’m sure a quick Google search would probably be more helpful than me. If you look at the trail map on TrailLink I think you can see at least one campground. Thanks for watching!
@@Adventuresonebikes Thanks. I will check out that trail and nearby campgrounds (we have a teardrop RV). May never make it up there from Texas, but putting it on my bucket list anyway. I have a recumbent trike and now want all our trips very near bike trails.
Very nice. Looking for a nice biking getaway with adult grandkids. How do you get back where you started?
We turned around and rode back! I’m not aware of any transportation options, but that’s because I never looked for any. The local bike group is LocalMotion. May want to check them out. Thanks for watching.
♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for watching!
I know this is not just recent but could you share what song you are playing while riding on the causeway? And where you got it? I just love it and it would fit well with some of my videos I do. Bless you and ride safe.
I have a subscription to Epidemic Sound. The track is titled: Western Call by Cody Francis.
@@Adventuresonebikes thank you!
Where about in New York are you from? I grew up in East Syracuse about 1/4 mile from the Erie Canal. I have ridden that trail many times and played ice hockey on the canal in the winter when I was younger. Much younger.
Hi Brian, We live a little east of Rochester. We have to go about 20 minutes to get to the canal. We are hoping to finish the SYR to ALB section in the next few weeks. Thanks for watching.
@@Adventuresonebikes Nice. My wife and I met at RIT so we’ve spend time in Rochester as well. She’s from Johnstown NY which is near Amsterdam.
Very nice is there a RV park near this bike path so we could easily pickup the trail from the RV park ?
We stayed in a hotel when we rode this trail, so I'm not familiar with any particular campgrounds. However, I did do a quick search of the area on the app I use for campgrounds: Roadtrippers, and there appear to be a number of State and private campgrounds near the route.
Ty so much for your time Merry Christmas to you and your family !!@@Adventuresonebikes
Is bike rental available in this place? Thank you great video
I didn’t need to investigate renting a bike, so I’m not the best person to ask. I believe Local Motion might be a place to look, but I’m not sure - so you may want to Google search bike rentals. Thanks for watching.
I've used Northstar rental twice, and skirack once. North Star rental is way better, the people are way nicer. They are both pretty close to the trail, but it is a steep hill to the lake.
yoga class on side of bike path means your in LA or Vermont !! 🤣
Definitely!!
Hello, I just came across your videos. I very much enjoy watching them. If you can add how it is with the Restrooms situation(distance, number of) on each of your videos, that would be very much appreciated. Some city girls do not like to go into the woods. I don't know if you can add it in the video description on videos you have already uploaded. Thanks
Hi. Thanks for the idea. I'm not sure I can go back and add anything to the rides we've completed because unless I captured it in footage I didn't use I can't remember those details today :( Thanks for watching.
think you know were all the rail trails are
Thanks for watching!
Why don’t you introduce this video telling us where it is and where we can pick up the trail can you start off like halfway through the paragraph and looks like we missed everything I do not have any idea at all with this path is no clue I know it’s Vermont Mesa best I can find
Hi. Thanks for the feedback.
@@Adventuresonebikes ??
@@Timberbeartrail Unfortunately there isn't any way to add anything to a video once it is posted to RUclips, so I appreciate your comments. I did state that the trail was in Burlington, VT within the first few seconds, and it is in the video notes.
Please use metric units.
Thank you for your comment.
I'm a leftist from Canada and Vermont is one of the cleanest state in America thanks to Bernie Sanders and Vermont is Bernie Sanders state three political parties and they don't gerrymander their state three political parties the only one in America really Bernie Sanders helped build that lake front
It's a beautiful trail for sure. Thanks for watching.
You can't gerrymander a small state like VT because the voting districts are all state wide.
Yeah welcome to leftist Canada... where you can go to prison for life because of stating your opinion on social media... nice place
Skate park
Thanks for watching.
