Cycling the George S. Mickelson Trail in South Dakota

  • The Mickelson trail in South Dakota is a 109 mile long rail trail that winds through the Black Hills. This is the most scenic rail trail that I have ridden so far. The town of Deadwood is at the northern terminus. The trail goes through Lead, Rochport, Hill City, Custer, Pringle and ends at Edgemont at the southern terminus. Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park are attractions near the trail worth visiting. Definitely put this trail on the "must-do" list.

    This is by far the Best video I've seen of the Mickelson Trail! Well done Sir! Excellent explanation of the granite outcroppings; never knew that about the crystalline structure; thank you! Just a word of advice; don't be laying down Ace's & 8's and declaring you've got a full-house! You'll be laughed out of the casino! Stealth camp? What stealth camp? ; )

      Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! I know. 2 pairs. You're right, I'm not a card player. LOL! Stealth camping is like stopping on the side of the trail after dark to camp and hope nobody see's you. Some people do that, but it can be risky. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!

    Another wonderful video!! Your lodging/camping choices/decisions (hotel/air BNB, etc.) much appreciated. 1) Would be nice to know names of specific places (hotel, etc.) where you stay 2) Would also be nice to know your transportation decisions (personal vehicle, rental, Amtrak, etc.) to/from starting/ending points of your rides. Looking forward to your next ride!!!

      Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. Videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Actually, my wife and I took 2 vehicles out to the Black Hills. That way we could self-shuttle. Small hassle getting out there, but gave us major freedom on the trail. We rode the trail in 4 days. We stayed in Deadwood the first 2 nights and then in Custer for 2 nights. My wife prefers air BnB's. So I leave that up to her. There are lots of accomodations in the Black Hills. It's a popular tourist destination. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!

    I did the Mickelson this year May 2024 ahead of Memorial Day. Ernie, the State Patrol Ranger, was the only person I saw from Pringle to Edgemont, 35 miles. The only con was lack of information on camping along the trail. Most of the trail is ROW thru private land, so make sure you know where the patch’s of Black Hills NF are where wild or dispersed is allowed.

    • @paulsuchecki3985
      @paulsuchecki3985  3 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. You met Ernie? He's a cool guy. There are a few shelters for camping along the trail, but not many. And they might not be where you need them to be. Ernie was the one that suggested to me that if you camped off the trail, out of site, not on private property, keep a low profile and don't draw attention to yourself, nobody would bother you. But you didn't hear that from me nor Ernie. Thanks again. Stay safe and ride on!

    In 1978ish I was offered a job as a forester for Custer State Park. Alas, I did not take it due to family constraints. However, I was so impressed by the Park, the management and the beauty of it, I wish I was there now. One thing I remember to this day, just, I believe, east of Custer the town was a restaurant called, "Custer's Last Hamburger Stand". It still cracks me up. Thanks for the informative video, I'd love to ride that some day. Blessings.

    We live just a few hours from you in mid Missouri on Rte 66. Just returned yesterday from a late season ride on the Mickelson centered around Hill City. We managed to do 3 of the tunnels. It is a well maintained trail with beautiful scenery all along it. Well worth the trip. Ours was cut short a day due to a significant rain snow mix event. Thanks for your efforts to document the beauty and history of the trail.

If I was going to bike pack the trail on my own, I would look into long term parking (4 days or so) in Deadwood. There are also shuttles, but I have no info on them. A quick search on the web would show more updated info. I hope that helps some. "As long as the grass grows and the wind blows." That was another US Gvt. promise not kept. Excellent video Paul! I rode the Mickelson in mid-September 2015, perfect weather. Went to the end then turned east to Grasslands National Park, and back north through the park and into the town of Custer for a nice Lollipop route back to Deadwood. I saw a few day hikers and day cyclists, but no one camping or riding the whole route. Very peaceful and quiet route. A park ranger told me not to filter the stream water due to old mining run-off toxicity. Have you ridden the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska? Thanks for video and promoting rail trails.

      Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! I rode (next to) the Cowboy trail. The Sand Hills in Nebraska are awesome. I found the trail to be soft, especially with a full load and thinner tires. The road next to the trail had a nice wide paved shoulder, so I opted for the road. The bridge near Valentine over the Niobrara is pretty cool. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!

    Great review. What towns did you stay in for overnight accommodations? (I may have missed this towards the end of the video.)

    I rode part of the trail from Custer towards Hill City and back and now that I have retired I plan to ride the whole thing. I was thinking of camping somewhere in the middle and riding to the north and south ends and back on different days, but I’ve also heard of people parking in Edgemont and getting a shuttle ride to Deadwood then riding back to their car.
    In the section I rode sometimes the edge of the trail was soft, so I stayed to the middle as much as possible. There were people walking near Custer but not many bikes.
