Cycling the George S. Mickelson Trail in South Dakota

- The Mickelson trail in South Dakota is a 109 mile long rail trail that winds through the Black Hills. This is the most scenic rail trail that I have ridden so far. The town of Deadwood is at the northern terminus. The trail goes through Lead, Rochport, Hill City, Custer, Pringle and ends at Edgemont at the southern terminus. Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse and Custer State Park are attractions near the trail worth visiting. Definitely put this trail on the "must-do" list.
Thanks for sharing with us. Your footage and narration are always top notch. Honestly some of the best cycling content out there. You capture the feel of being out on your bike about as good as you can, I always enjoy your posts. Thanks Paul!
I agree.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Delighted to see you back on your bike once again, long may you continue! Thanks for sharing another great video.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
This is by far the Best video I've seen of the Mickelson Trail! Well done Sir! Excellent explanation of the granite outcroppings; never knew that about the crystalline structure; thank you! Just a word of advice; don't be laying down Ace's & 8's and declaring you've got a full-house! You'll be laughed out of the casino! Stealth camp? What stealth camp? ; )
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! I know. 2 pairs. You're right, I'm not a card player. LOL! Stealth camping is like stopping on the side of the trail after dark to camp and hope nobody see's you. Some people do that, but it can be risky. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Great video Paul....I'll be adding the Mick to my riding bucket list.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Another wonderful video!! Your lodging/camping choices/decisions (hotel/air BNB, etc.) much appreciated. 1) Would be nice to know names of specific places (hotel, etc.) where you stay 2) Would also be nice to know your transportation decisions (personal vehicle, rental, Amtrak, etc.) to/from starting/ending points of your rides. Looking forward to your next ride!!!
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. Videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Actually, my wife and I took 2 vehicles out to the Black Hills. That way we could self-shuttle. Small hassle getting out there, but gave us major freedom on the trail. We rode the trail in 4 days. We stayed in Deadwood the first 2 nights and then in Custer for 2 nights. My wife prefers air BnB's. So I leave that up to her. There are lots of accomodations in the Black Hills. It's a popular tourist destination. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Thank you so much!!@@paulsuchecki3985
I thought Deadwood Town had a waterfall called Viagra FAILS!
lol!
Love your upright riding posture. Proof it can be done. I had back surgery a few years back. Now always ride upright Dutch style. Outstanding narrative! Many thanks.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! I have neck and shoulder issues. The upright position is probably less efficient, but its more comfortable and you can see better. Thanks again. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Paul, your videos are a true embodiment of Americana. Always excited to watch your new uploads, and I always end up inspired and excited to get some miles in by the end! This one was especially beautiful--please keep up the good work!
I agree, it's super americana, and I love it! Appreciation for the beauty of the land and its history
@@uniworkhorse I do second your thoughts. Cheers.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
G'day Paul, I will say it again, you are a legend mate! Great stuff, I learn more about American history, mixed with a bit of comedy and surrounded by some beautiful countryside, that I would get from normal tv or from the library. Love ya stuff mate, watching from Aussie 🇦🇺.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. One of these days I'm coming to Australia to go bike touring. G'day! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the road. Stay safe and ride on!
We did part of it a couple of years ago. I've always wanted to go back and do the entire trail. Now I want to do it even more. Thanks.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Thanks Paul. I have to agree you put together some of the best bike related material on the web. The visuals and commentary are great, the music matches well and you keep things moving.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
Wow, what a fantastic trail with an equally fantastic video describing your 4-day journey riding it. Top notch video as always that is not only entertaining but also very informative. Who would guess that you were a science teacher in a former life before retirement? So good to see you back out on your bike and to see your sidekick riding with you! This is a trail that I would have loved to ride back when I was able to do so!!
Thanks Bud, Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. Now I'm a full time bike tourist. at least while I can. The Mickelson is a great trail. She's a little camera shy. Thanks for watching. Hope to see you soon.
Great review! Thanks for letting us know you stayed in motels. That peaked my wife's interest.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! My wife's doesn't really camp either. Plenty of motels in the Black Hills. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
thank god you posted another video Paul, both my wife and i love watching your videos !!
Sorry for the slow response. I've also been out bike touring. More videos coming. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the road. Stay safe and ride on!
Really great to see you out there again, Paul. I’ve missed your adventures and your very straight commentary. Hope you get out again soon.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Just got back from a bike touring trip in Wisconsin and northern Illinois. It's great to be out riding again. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Loving your videos Paul 😊 keep it up ❤

Those tunnels are awesome
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. They are. The whole trail is awesome. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the road. Stay safe and ride on!
Great video once again Paul. Drone shots are fantastic. Very informative as usual. I recommended your channel to someone on Facebook this week who was looking to ride Route 66 in Illinois.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
Thanks, Paul. Your drone game is beautifully complimenting your terrestrial, documentary commentary. These are getting better every summer. I look forward to every one of your trips.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! I think this is my best one yet. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Paul I didn't know you were a cattle driver!
Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. LOL! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
I am sooooo glad I subscribed to your channel. I bike mainly rural roads and gravel coal roads in Southern Indiana but I’m getting into the rail trail bit. Went and rode the Tunnel Hill Rail Trail in Illinois recently and now I need more of these to ride on. The Mic looks like a great trail. Your commentary and drone game is second to none! Thanks for sharing your journey on all these trails!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
The Katy in Missouri, The Gap in PA, and the C@O are also ones you shouldn't miss.
I did the Mickelson this year May 2024 ahead of Memorial Day. Ernie, the State Patrol Ranger, was the only person I saw from Pringle to Edgemont, 35 miles. The only con was lack of information on camping along the trail. Most of the trail is ROW thru private land, so make sure you know where the patch’s of Black Hills NF are where wild or dispersed is allowed.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. You met Ernie? He's a cool guy. There are a few shelters for camping along the trail, but not many. And they might not be where you need them to be. Ernie was the one that suggested to me that if you camped off the trail, out of site, not on private property, keep a low profile and don't draw attention to yourself, nobody would bother you. But you didn't hear that from me nor Ernie. Thanks again. Stay safe and ride on!
Nice video. I like the narration. It was informative without being too wordy, if that makes sense. A lot of good photography in here too.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Okay! Okay! I'm convinced. I'll put it on my list. I'm building up a bike packing bike out of an old cheap ROYCE UNION dumpster bike. Maybe I'll ride that one on it (?) Thanks, amigo.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
@paulsuchecki3985 It's alright Amigo 👍 Touring is always a great excuse. You keep all them little parts shinning.
Wonderful episode. I like your narration very much. Thanks for takin me along. Best wishes from Germany
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Greetings from the USA. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!

Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
BTW, cool background music!!
Thanks again. 😎
Beautiful trail Paul! Brought back a lot of memories from when I was stationed at Elmsworth AFB outside of Rapid City, SD a couple decades ago lol. It' has some beautiful scenery, even the prairies with the tumbleweed rolling by and coyotes howling. I visited Deadwood and Mt Rushmore several times and went skiing in the Black Hills...good times!!!
In 1978ish I was offered a job as a forester for Custer State Park. Alas, I did not take it due to family constraints. However, I was so impressed by the Park, the management and the beauty of it, I wish I was there now. One thing I remember to this day, just, I believe, east of Custer the town was a restaurant called, "Custer's Last Hamburger Stand". It still cracks me up. Thanks for the informative video, I'd love to ride that some day. Blessings.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Its a great ride. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Next time just tell them to mooove over
Good one! I tried mooing at them, but it didn't work. LOL!

Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! I hope to ride in Oregon next summer. Hope to see you down the road. Stay safe and ride on!😎
awesome video, can you describe your bike including the handlebars?
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. I just got a new Surly Disc Trucker this year. It's got disc brakes and fat tires. I plan on making a video about it soon. Here's a link to the handlebars. Wald 1066 Handlebars amzn.to/3fLRHVH Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Nice job, brother came in from Mt Rushmore to Hill city last year to Deadwood on our cross country trek. Awesome trail!
Very cool! Thanks for watching. Sounds like a great ride. Stay safe and ride on!
Seems like the drone would have moved those cows out of the way.
Or send them into a stampede. LOL! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Stay safe and ride on!

Just discovered this channel. Excellent video with great production and sound. Watching this makes me want to load up the truck, leave NW Louisiana and head for the Black Hills and the Mickelson Trail. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! The Black Hills are awesome. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
The best video of the Mickelson trail that I’ve seen.
The Mick is a great trail! Thanks, I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
love the drone shots!

Cyclist plus cattle herder 😄
Full time cyclist, part time cattle herder. Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!😎
This was our first time seeing your videos. What a blessing! It was just beautiful! 😊
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!😎
We live just a few hours from you in mid Missouri on Rte 66. Just returned yesterday from a late season ride on the Mickelson centered around Hill City. We managed to do 3 of the tunnels. It is a well maintained trail with beautiful scenery all along it. Well worth the trip. Ours was cut short a day due to a significant rain snow mix event. Thanks for your efforts to document the beauty and history of the trail.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! The Mick is a great ride. I've rode across Missouri on the Katy trail and the Trans Am. There's a lot of history on old Rt. 66. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Rock On Paul Rock Onnn!! 👍👍
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
Great work, Paul. You are really hitting your stride as a bicycle documentarian.
Wow, thanks! I really appreciate it. Having fun for sure. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on! 😎
Thoroughly enjoyed the video. Thank you.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
Beautiful part of South Dakota.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. I love the Mickelson trail. It's one of the best.
Congratulations on putting together the definitive overview of the Mickelson Trail. This was a fantastic video. I ran 50 miles of the northern section of the trail about a year ago but have not done the southern part. I will be sharing this video with a lot of friends who plan to visit the area. Great job.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. The Black Hills are awesome! Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Thank Paul
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
New subscriber here, Paul. Love the Mick! Maybe I'm biased as it's in my home state😊.Did it for the first time last year w my girlfriend. Had a blast! Great editing and videography.
You absolutely HAVE to do the Hiawatha Trail in NW Montana. Would love to see your video on that.
Keep up the content and looking forward to catching up on your previous videos. 🤙🏻🇺🇲🇸🇯
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! The Mick is a great ride. The Coeur d'lene and Hiawatha trails are on my list. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Great video, i rode most of the trail in August from Crazy Horse to Deadwood on my cross America bike tour, it cost $10 for bikes at Crazy Horse carving, one of the highlights of the trip.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. The Black Hills are amazing. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Great job paul
Sorry for the slow response. I've also been out bike touring. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
@paulsuchecki3985 no problemo, I'm surprised you responded at all. Can't wait to see the next adventure. Have a great day.
Using a drone and a 360 camera? And did you have a camera person? Great video. Thanks.
Yes and yes. The "drive by" shots were done with the Insta360 and motion was added later. No camera person needed. My wife took some "follow me" shots and some of the drone shots. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and ride on!
Watched second time!
Great video!
BTW: Majority would be better served
using your handlebar uprightness, versus leaning too far forward!
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. The upright position is probably less efficient, but it's more comfortable and I can see the scenery better. Thanks again! Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Thanks for all of your videos... They have me planning for a trip or two for this summer... Where do you park your vehicle on a trip like this & get back to it at the end?? Thanks!!.... I like your little quote from "Little Big Man"...
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Sorry about the slow response. My wife and I stayed at B&B's along the way in Deadwood and Custer. We took 2 vehicles so we could self-shuttle. If I was going to bike pack the trail on my own, I would look into long term parking (4 days or so) in Deadwood. There are also shuttles, but I have no info on them. A quick search on the web would show more updated info. I hope that helps some. "As long as the grass grows and the wind blows." That was another US Gvt. promise not kept. Hope to see you down the road. Stay safe and ride on!!
Always Great to ride With You Paul
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Another outstanding video. This is the 4th video of yours that I have watched. I like the new Surley, Nice Ride!
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
I worked marking that trail while employed with the Black Hills NF off of the Custer ranger district.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. The Black Hills are pretty special. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Excellent video! Thank you for sharing. We have that trail on our list for our new ebikes. Glad we got a glimpse of your cute wife!
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. The Mickelson is a great trail and the Black Hills are truly special. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Looks like a beautiful trail! Putting it on my bucket list.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
i rand the Deadwood Michelson marathon in hmm, 2002 maybe, it started and finished in Deadwood. not sure of its course at this point. But, I've not seen most of the sections you've featured and I'd like to. thx for showing us the complete section all 109
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Excellent video Paul! I rode the Mickelson in mid-September 2015, perfect weather. Went to the end then turned east to Grasslands National Park, and back north through the park and into the town of Custer for a nice Lollipop route back to Deadwood. I saw a few day hikers and day cyclists, but no one camping or riding the whole route. Very peaceful and quiet route. A park ranger told me not to filter the stream water due to old mining run-off toxicity. Have you ridden the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska? Thanks for video and promoting rail trails.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! I rode (next to) the Cowboy trail. The Sand Hills in Nebraska are awesome. I found the trail to be soft, especially with a full load and thinner tires. The road next to the trail had a nice wide paved shoulder, so I opted for the road. The bridge near Valentine over the Niobrara is pretty cool. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Great review. What towns did you stay in for overnight accommodations? (I may have missed this towards the end of the video.)
We are thinking of doing this on bikes, so would need a hotel style accommodations at night 40 mile days 35 mile days. Or, however, it breaks out to do the entire length.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Sorry about the slow response. My wife and I drove 2 vehicles out to the Black Hills. That way we could self-shuttle. It was a bit of a hassle getting there, but allowed us more freedom once there. We stayed at B&B's in Deadwood and Custer. We covered the entire trail (109 miles) in 4 days. It's a great trail. Stay safe and ride on!!
You need to try the Kettle Valley Rail trail from Kelowna BC down thru Chute Lake and into Penticton. Unforgettable!
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Yes, I agree. It's on my list. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Sorry but I don’t like the rock carvings , environmental vandalism .😢
I think nature's carving on the Cathedral Spires in Custer S.P. are much more impressive.
New subscriber here, glad you showed up in my feed! I wasn't familiar with the Mich but your video makes it looks like I def want to add to my biking bucket list.
Welcome aboard. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
I was excited to watch this video especially when I saw the location. Great production. Maybe it was the location but your narration reminds me of a documentary with Kevin Costner with narrating.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Kevin Costner?? LOL! Stay safe and ride on!
I love your videos Paul! Keep on pedaling
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Definitely on my list
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Great video. I enjoyed eery minute. What month of the year were you there? It would be nice if you mentioned where you stayed along the way. The Mick is on my bucket list. Thanks!!
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! We went in June. My wife and I drove 2 vehicles out to the Black Hills, that way we could self-shuttle. We stayed at B&B's in Deadwood and Custer. It's a great trail. Stay safe and ride on!!
Great video and history 👏
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Have you ridden the High Trestle trail and Racoon River trail system Des Moines , Iowa?
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Not yet, but we've been looking into them. Put 'em on the list. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
I rode part of the trail from Custer towards Hill City and back and now that I have retired I plan to ride the whole thing. I was thinking of camping somewhere in the middle and riding to the north and south ends and back on different days, but I’ve also heard of people parking in Edgemont and getting a shuttle ride to Deadwood then riding back to their car.
In the section I rode sometimes the edge of the trail was soft, so I stayed to the middle as much as possible. There were people walking near Custer but not many bikes.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. Videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Actually, my wife and I took 2 vehicles out to the Black Hills. That way we could self-shuttle. Small hassle getting out there, but gave us major freedom on the trail. I'm sure there are shuttles, but I have no information about it. Have a great trip!! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Great stuff as usual, great drone shots and music. Your commentary is the best of the bike trip videos, be they trail or road.
Glad you like them! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on! (Sorry for the slow response).
Really enjoyed this.
Try Biz Johnson in Westwood Ca
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Thanks for the tip. Sounds like a cool trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Great video. Thanks. I learned a lot. If you did it again what time of year would you go?? When was this shot and what were the temp?
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Its a great ride. We rode this trail in July. Because of the elevation, the temps stayed pretty mild. Mid 80s. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
My brother and I rode this trail on our coast to coast ride about 10 years ago. It is one of the best rail-trails in the northwest. Its a shame the national coast to coast trail is skipping this trail. This trail needs to be on everyone's "to do" list. Irish gulch was a great stop along the trail.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. I agree, one of the best rail trails in the country. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
I've been wondering when you would get out there. Great video brother!!
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! It's a great ride. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Our 2.5 year old yells at every cow he sees, "Stop pooping on the trail!"
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Probably should have put a viewer discretion warning on it. LOL! Stay safe and ride on!
Great video Paul! The area shown at 11:11 and again at 22:18, is that part of the Mickelson trail or a side trail? Is it bikeable or for hiking only?
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. A couple of miles off trail in another part of the Black Hills. We spent about a week there. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Thanks for sharing your adventures with us Paul! Another great video! This one is on my bucket list.
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out bike touring. More videos coming. The Mick is a great trail! Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Hope to see you down the trail. Stay safe and ride on!
Anyone else catch that Ernie's out there on single speed? Not sure if it's fixed gear or coaster brake, but one cog is no joke in those hills!
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Ernie is a great guy a very strong rider. He rides almost everyday. Stay safe and ride on!
Great video. We are in our late 60s and don't camp but are thier any hotels on this trail?
Yes. We stayed at motels in Deadwood for 2 nights and Custer for 2 nights. South of Custer services become scarce. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. Stay safe and Ride on!
this is were am late to be. born hot springs, we lived edgemont, and igloo before closed. my bucket list to do is re wander the hills as done for 2 decades.
Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it. The Black Hills are awesome! Stay safe and ride on!
