Confusion for how notes sit on the guitar neck is one of the most talked about issues that face both beginners and intermediate students alike. The issue with learning notes on the neck is that the note patterns on guitar are more complex than on piano or horn. There are more note locations and we also have unisons which makes success at note learning more complicated.
Once a guitar student starts to question whether a note on one string relates to another note someplace else, confusion will quickly set in. Given the nature of how notes are laid out on guitar, it is easy to see where this comes from.
Luckily, there is another way for us to reference notes on the neck, and it is especially helpful when it comes to learning the root locations for chords & scales. We can learn notes rather fast if we simply preference our root notes consistently from positions based off of the lowest three guitar strings. If we learn note names based on string set and position we’ll learn them a lot faster.
Along with that, we can preferentially apply the theory of “Natural Occurring Semi-tones” to any start position on the neck. From there we can use three notes vertically along the three low strings to establish a protocol that delivers all the note name results across the position by this note movement strategy.
