An explanation, I was watching a streamer named @Elajjaz as he played Final Fantasy XVI. At one point, his chat started calling him bald, even though he has plenty of hair. One chatter in particular took this very hard. 'NOOO!' they typed. 'MY STREAMER IS BALDING NOOOO'. To this chatter, it was like he was dying. This was very poignant, and stuck with me. Later I read the post from Supper Mario Broth about Mario having weird bald sprites and it hit me. Mario, baldness, FFXVI, sadness... I wanted to combine them all. This is the result.

As an 18 year old who is dealing with an extreme alopecia, this hits hard
It's quite sad because we as mammals mostly rely our confidence in some sort of attractive and healthy looking features, and in some cases masculinity as feminity in those particular attractive features can show of the most, imagine a lion without its mans, a peacock without its beautiful feathers. Losing that specific characteristic that living beings are born with and grow with it, losing it represents as much as being unhealthy, sick and overall defective if you compare yourself to the others individuals who aren't struggling with this and show no insecurities and problems at all, questioning why this has to happen specifically to you, it really feels like a fuck you in particular kinda situation.
It represents sin.

Which seems a little out of character. Balugio is super nice, and bald himself. I'd argue that the scenes of people laughing at Mario are in his mind. He's at the tipping point, coming to terms with his receding hairline and the relentless march of time. Maybe he wakes up tomorrow happy as can be, but for this night, this moment, let the man grieve.

This struck a bit of a personal chord; a week or so ago my parents discovered that I have an area on the back of my head where my hair is thinning. I’ve begun using Rogaine to see if I can thicken the area back up again. I always knew this was a possibility, as all the men on my mom’s side of the family went bald, but it is definitely concerning. All a part of getting older…
There are supplements like saw palmetto extract that can also help with hair thickness, it also can be influenced by diet, like many things

This is exactly how I feel losing my hair at 19, its rough.
Every morning, he donned his iconic red T-shirt and blue dungarees with a sense of resignation. Throughout the day, as he jumped over Goombas and dodged carnivorous plants, he couldn't help but overhear the laughter and hurtful comments of the other Mushroom Kingdom characters. What I love about this video is that it would’ve been infinitely easier to just edit a few polygons and claim that there was a bald Mario model found in the SM64 beta files from the giga leak, but he wanted to sight Supper Mario Broth so that he could link proof. Lumpy really goes the extra mile of not only making new art, but also editing the official art to such a degree so seamlessly.

Considering that, it's likely that Mario as a character wasn't well defined back then, and that includes information such as his age, because you have to have really bad hair genetics to be bald at 24/25.
Plot twist: when Mario became bald, he realized he’s too old for all this running, jumping, and saving the princess. So the Mario in Super Mario Wonder is his son taking his place to continue the legacy because someone still has to stop Bowser and save the day.
