Over the last few years, I have built up my nerd credentials when it comes to the layout of Hogwarts Castle. I've built the entire castle in Minecraft and I've made several videos boring people to death about changes made to the castle. So it only seemed appropriate to react to the new Hogwarts Legacy game and dive into what changes have been made.
Hogwarts Castle is a location featured heavily in the Harry Potter film franchise. This starred SEO-friendly actors such as Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Hogwarts Legacy is a new game coming in February 2023 to Playstation 5, Xbox and PC. Okay, I'm done here.

I think this version of Hogwarts is a perfect combo of movie/book Hogwarts (maybe even from the older video games to a degree). I like that they’ve “enhanced” certain areas which is ultimately going to make the castle bigger and more complex.

When they mentioned that they didn't want to take the sim route I too was worried at first.
Then I watched it again and it sounded to me that the quest have a structure but not like "do mission 1 and then you have to take this class and only after that you can really progress in the world". To me it sounded more like you have to take a few important classes to get the "core" spells and then after that it's up to you if you continue with the story, explore the world or go to classes to improve but without a timer that you have to be at certain classes in time... would be a little stressful I think when there is so much to explore.
If that would be the case than I think it's a nice compromise between the sim aspect and a story driven game :D

I think the bigger issue I have is not the class structure but going away from the sim route I worry that the castle will feel really dead. If our only interactions with students is getting a quest from them its going to feel very fake. that's why I think its pretty big mistake to not include minigames and house points mechanic. As an example what is gonna motivate the player to visit the common room other then a necessary step in story narrative? if they had wizards chess and other interactive repeatable things to do in the common room it would make the castle as a whole feel more lively. Additional things like buying joke items like stink bombs and interacting with students that way would be great, but it seems like the students are just going to be AI zombies.
You could definitely make the castle feel alive by adding quests like the one in the showcase with that ravenclaw girl, but the issue there is all the actually actions happened behind the scenes and the girl just explains what occurred to you through narration. That just ends up feeling really hollow, cause all we end up engaging in is another different flavor of a collection quest then we go back to her and she says thanks and that's that. Still excited for the game but I just lowered my expectations for just exploring the castles design for a few hours anything more is cool, but my bet is gonna be that they will miss at an opportunity to make an exceptional game.

I’ve been hooked for the last 5 days but your point near the end about it being more linear than RPG? Yeah.. you couldn’t have worded it better man. That is literally the ONLY issue I am slowly discovering with this game, I went in blind - hoping for exactly what you were saying! To just BE a student. Not necessarily the chosen one lol. There’ll only ever be ‘one’ chosen one - and we all know who he is!
The minute they started mentioning goblins and building their own narrative I was kinda like ‘meh’ - and wanted to be able to hang out in the dorm, build relationships with students & teachers, go to classes, skip classes, chill in 3 Broomsticks etc - just BE in the world.
I think what I’m discovering is, there’s a constant feeling of always feeling like you’re meant to be doing something else - rather than just, as you put it, create your own story.

Regarding the grand staircase having a rectangular plan in the movies within the tower, I don't think that it's a discrepancy. The way I think it was laid out was that the staircase was in the center of the tower, basically a square inscribed in a circle, with the corridors and rooms leading out of it adapting to the shape of the curved external walls of the tower. That's why the DADA classroom and the "forbidden corridor" iirc go along a curve as they are located at the periphery of the tower, while the staircase itself was "freestanding" in the middle of it. The staircase doesn't have to match the external walls of the tower, in fact I suppose it was much more practical for it be squared.

I particularly love how baroque the DADA tower looks, almost reminds me of the Gunhilda of Gorsemoore Corridor from PoA on PS2, and the Entry Hall being a callback to first two films, with the Chamber of Reception based on the Oxford University entrance.
The central hub in the East Wing seems vast and layered, makes me wonder if it is connected to the Grand Staircase. Speaking of which, I like the new round design. The Transfiguration Courtyard looks like it has an open part facing the gorge now.
I'm also really disappointed by the lack of Gobstones and Wizards Chess. If a 2007 movie-licensed game could feature them, what stopped them here ??? I too hope they'll rectify this with post-launch content or DLCs.

I always considered the rectangle staircase from the film to make sense. The rectangle area of the Grand Staircase in the films was a much smaller footprint than the tower as a whole - so I always thought it was perfectly reasonable for this rectangle space to exist in a much bigger circle shaped tower (albeit maybe with a few faux windows here and there - but hey, magic!). In older games, once you exited the Grand Staircase off many of the floors, there was often a round corridor that circled around the inner edge of the tower, before taking you to other parts of the castle (such as the corridors surrounding the Quad which lead off from the Grand Staircase tower). However, in Hogwarts Legacy, it looks like the entire staircase IS the tower (telling by the windows and size) - so my question is, in Hogwarts Legacy, all those doors leading off the staircase all the way around the staircase - where do they go? A Darwinian death trap door for students to fall to their death? Some of the doors could lead off into the corridors surrounding the Quad, but they'd have to be in the same position on each floor and it just doesn't make sense when comparing to the footage... although perhaps, again, magic windows... or magic doors... it is Hogwarts after all lol... but yes wish they kept the original staircase as you said!

I consider Hogwarts Legacy's geography to be more canonical than the movies, keeping in mind the time gap, of course. Change my mind.
For instance, in the films, the Great Hall looks unconfortably tight and overcrowded-- a sign of bad design, especially considering the castle is supposed able to resize itself and be bigger on the inside --, most spaces look bland and outright inconsistent, stuff is missing or added which contradicts the source material, and the Great Staircase is really scuffed. The game is better.
Of course it has its problems: the lake is supposed to be south, not east, Hogsmeade should be north of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade Station to the south of the lake, and the Forbidden Forest should be closer. But I have the impression Rowling sucks at geography and her own descriptions don't always make sense either; why is the West Wing to the east of the Quad? Unless the movie's castle is mirrored, of course.
Thus this is, without a doubt, the definitive version of the castle, overwriting the movies, bar only the books of course. But there shouldn't be much contradiction there at all.
PS: The Gryffindor common room is at the end of the Gryffindor corridor. That is book truth. The Staircase location is just wrong. The movies's Great Staircase is questionable too. The game's seem more accurate.

Im also a Hogwarts nerd, always were obsessed with drawing the maps when a movie came out.. I watched the movie a 100 of times and draw the school. So every movie i changed the maps, some things i loved some times i didnt like.. I also build a hogwarts in a 2d game and i always combine the chamber of reception and the courtyard in the front. The chamber of reception is the most 1 hall where i feel that hogwarts history. I felt again when i was 10 and watched the first movie. What i also wanted to tell, the east wing entrance i noticed that they used the "grand staircase" concept of the deathly hallows. I loved the stairs. But i didnt liked the idea of changing the old one. So i really like the new location of the deahtly hallows version of the staircase. But i need to accept the new grand staircase in the Hogwarts Legacy. I really love the stairs of the basement to the Hall above. And then another staircase to the grand staircase. And that you have a nice view inside the grand staircase from the basement staircase up. It feels a bit ministry of magic vibes. I love it how they used all the stairs in the game. Its not a boring location to explore with every staircase in the new game. Im very curious about the greenhouses too.. I didnt liked the idea but i think it can be a very nice one. Behind the greenhouses are some stairs with some levels so im curious where that leads too. It haves a bit of the first malificent movie with the sleeping beauty castle. Stairs around the castle and a lot of levels to walk around the castle. Its very like a real old castle. The castle is really living with all the levels around it and trees and courtyards. The last Hogwarts that i designed for the 2D game in a building game, was designed with the big viaduct. Because a lot of younger people wanted it there.. So i created on the beginning of the bridge 2 bridge houses, the one at the courtyard side. So i tried to create a moment. And i made a beautifull view of hogwarts in the back. And i choosse to build a forest. Not a empty hill.. The forest idea was from a minecraft hogwarts server. And it felt so nice to walk from the hill with the big trees and a small psth acrossed it. And when you come to the bridge the castle showed up. And that view was amazing. But in my game i created two viaduct houses as a entrance to walk the bridge.. In the movie there was no path from the bridge to.... Something..... I really love how passionated you are and i feel the same about it. Harry Potter was my childhood.. And still with everything what i create as a game illustrator, or dragqueen and also interior designer.. I always have inspirations of that chilhood world of Harry Potter. Im. Very curious how you imagen Beauxbatons. How you would create the school. I really love the school and also build it a couple of time in the 2D game.. But i would like to know what you would do.. And i also want to knoe what kind of changed you would for Hogwarts legacy.

I think they could have kept more of those iconic aesthetics of the castle, like the DADA tower staricase, and the grand staircase whilst still enhancing the complexity of it all. The other thing that concerns me aswell is everything that has to do with the decoration of the castle in general. They said that every corner of the castle was supposed to be uniquely decorated, and my fear is that they might have gone too far with this, because it might feel like you could be anywhere else but Hogwarts. I kind of liked the gothic general aesthetic of the films castle and based on what we can see in the trailer it seems like they have gone with a mashup of different styles like french modernism which is absolutely anachronistic and out of place, or the sort of baroque italian (or maybe spanish) of the East Wing. Other things that i directly consider to be bad decisions are this two 1) The low height of the astronomy tower, (it has a very beautiful shape and worked really well in the composition of the external view of the castle), and 2) that weird thing they did with the center body of the clock tower which appeared firstly in the prisioner of Azkaban. The original desing was just so elegant!. Perhaps I would include in this list of errors, the choice of bringing in french modernism. I mean, it just makes no sense!! How is Beauxbuttons supossed to be decorated!!!??? Hogwarts is in Scotland!!!. All of this added to the horror vacui that seems to impregnate the decoration team. I think the challenge was to find a mid point between this two aproaches, but being a bit conservative. Nevertheless I am happy and very excited with this game, and I will play it delighted.
Plus! in the game, the wooden bridge is uniformelly decorated wilst in the movies the woodwork decoration seems to have been under a slow process of handcrafting haveing diverese motives. Check the scene in which Harry speaks with Lupin at the Prisioner of Azkaban. I mean there are plenty of ways of being exhuberant with the decration having all the magic and still being homogenous.

I definitely agree with you when it comes to the story. The wizarding world is so iconic and already rich with lore, that I don't really care much about the overarching storyline of the game, and would've much preferred them to make it more of a Hogwarts simulation. I'm very worried that the game will just feel like a generic triple A action game with a Harry Potter skin. They've done a great job in recreating Hogwarts, and I'm sure that exploring the castle will feel great, but I just get the feeling that they'll focus too much on the outside areas which they have created, and not on the pre-established iconic locations, and even Hogwarts itself.
I would've preferred them to scrap the "massive open world" idea, and just keep the iconic areas from the films, because that's what most of us want to see anyway. I would prefer a less ambitious storyline, I don't really care about being the chosen one, or vanquishing a legion of dark wizards etc, since we've already seen that in Harry Potter's story. What I would've liked from this game is a bit more of a school simulator, with student interactions, more immersive slice of life, everyday stuff; earning/losing house points depending on your choices, your house playing a more important role, being chased by prefects for jinxing people, etc. I find that this kind of stuff brings me back to a game and makes it infinitely replayable, long after the story has faded into the background.

Your views at the end on gameplay and what type of game they made it, will I believe cause concern for the real fans of Hogwarts and the wizarding world. The developers erred on the side of caution and tuned the game to be more for the general gaming population instead of for the true fans of the wizarding world. They thought they would be immersed into it and made to feel like they could live out a fantasy of being a student of Hogwarts. I believe the game will be very good, but will get a lot of criticism because those elements just won't exist to the extent most of the real fans of the lore had hoped for.

Finished the game a week ago or so. I think it was a good call to cut back mini-games etc... And focuson concrete features.
Now they can create a sequel a itterate on it with a lot of stuff. Maybe focus more on hogwarts itself than the outside ? Because you are 80% of your time outside of hogwarts sadly.

I’m interested in the story and I’m glad they didn’t go the sims route. And also this time period has a lot of lore behind it why would they just throw you into the wizarding world without an story? That sounds very boring to me, it’s an open world game every decision you make effects your character because it’s there story. There’s a ton of personalization, idk I simply don’t understand why anyone would just want to run around hogwarts for the whole game acting like a student when there’s a good core story and lore to the game and the world around it. Just sounds really boring and not engaging to me

What do you mean with following a story, that’s litteraly what an RPG is a main story with side quests. It being a sim would be so boring, like what do you wanna do? The Harry Potter books was interesting because of the mysteries, the mysteries in an intersting world, you can’t achieve that with multiplayer and a non story based video game

Can we talk about the fact the castle features the Art Nouveau style heavily and it sticks like a sore thumb? Not only because Hogwarts is supposed to be a Medieval castle (so everything should be Gothic or Romanesque), but also because Art Nouveau wasn't even a thing at the time Hogwarts Legacy takes place.

The reason that they made classes part of main missions and side missions, is entirely for playability. The game would be terrible if they didnt have this system. Imagine it, you have a 24 hour clock with atleast two classes each 24 hour round. The 24 hours likely pass in maybe one hour or so irl. How are you going to explore the open world when you have to be in DADA at 9? On a mission with professor fig? Sucks to be you, you now missed learning a new spell in charms class. How do you make it to transfiguration class at 11 when you are fist deep in a dungeon. Sure you could use the floo network to quickly make it to class but you as a player would constantly be interupted and have to maybe even restart dungeons over and over again. It would be a nightmare. While this is supposed to be an RPG where you can experience being a hogwarts student it is not a hogwarts student simulation game. It would be a pitty to limit the game because they have to stick to a class schedule.
I feel like the people having a problem with this game not being a sims game are the ones who likely never played an actual tripple A RPG before in their life. You have no clue how much better this is because you likely dont know what you have been missing.

I don't really care if it looks anything like the movies. They are amazingly inconsistent and a fairly poor representation of the books. While it is a bit sad that we can't play gobstones and chess, it doesn't really matter. They appeared in order of the phoenix, I think, and I played them once. The fact that it isn't a sim allows for much more freedom for exploration. We don't know how the main story will be structured at all though some progression will be locked to parts of it aswell as the seasons passing. I am guessing that the rest of the missions can be done in any order at any time. So more like Skyrim than the old Harry Potter games

biggest downfall is WB ownership. If the studio had more control I would have faith in favorable dlc expansions. Additionally, because of WB there will be zero mod support, which is a shame since this game could survive for years with a mod community. I agree with the take on the narrative element. I personally feel very little interest in the goblin uprising and in my opinion it should have just been a background to the sim elements of the game. Once again I believe its because WB that the game had to go towards a generic rpg narrative game. Those games are ultra safe and have shown to turn profit like horizon zero dawn, but they are repeats of the same ideas. I cant imagine the exploration outside the castle to be that engaging. it will just be attacking mobs and collecting a bunch of random crap (that will litter the mini-map with icons) to then craft into potions you wont really need to use.
Another big tragedy if its going the route as advertised is I fail to see them utilizing the castle to full effect which is confusing cause they clearly put so much effort into it. My cynical self ultimately views them only showing the intricate castle as a marketing strategy for the Hogwarts fans, and then when we get to experience the gameplay we will realize it falls really flat.

I see your point about "story driven concern", but... Have you played Persona (5)? One of the best RPG ever made, it's about school, it's story driven but gives you huge amount of free time. I hope Hogwarts Legacy will be Persona 5 in Harry Potter setting. You can;t make sandbox RPG in school, you have seasons, days, time is passing - it MUST be story driven, no way around it.

Thought you should know you sound like a RUclipsr named ESO... I hope they add more chatter between npc's sitting in common rooms and walking in hallways. It needs more ambient noise as well. In the gameplay it just sounds like all music. If you play a game like The Witcher 3 or Cyberpunk you constantly hear people talking and sounds from the cities and castles. Might be they have it mixed that way for the trailer but who knows.

Damn you really trigger me with the end comments/concerns with me being a gamer who have played actual fleshed out RPG games. It is not possible to do your own story entirely. The developers can give you choices that impact missions going forward and impact the end of the game - which they have done here - but you physically and digitally cannot make your own story from the ground up. Not unless you make and code the game yourself. If you want a simulation game then buy a simulation game. This is not it. Like omg just because its about hogwarts people think they can complain about everything even though its clear in the games genre that what you want isnt what this game is intended to be. So play something else if you dont like it. Jesus.
