  • In this video, I compare the Hogwarts Legacy depiction of the castle compared to the films. I point out the similarities and differences and which film the castle most closely represents.
    Hogwarts castle has changed a lot over the course of the Harry Potter films. The castle we see in Philosophers/Sorcerers Stone is very different to the castle we see in The Deathly Hallows. Now there's a new depiction on the way in Hogwarts Legacy for Playstation 5, PC and the Xbox series x.

    it seems to be more book accurate with little nods like ravenclaw's symbol being an eagle

    The proportions of the Castle seems to have been slightly changed (as you've noticed with the Astronomy Tower), most likely to make it an actual playable area. Many parts of the design of the film Castle were completely unproportional to human scale and in practicality couldn't possibly look exactly like they did in the miniature they designed. This is why the towers look different. Previous Harry Potter games dealt with this problem by completely cheating it with game engine magic, but here it seems they actually tried to make the exterior accurate to the interior.

    • @hogwartsexpert
      @hogwartsexpert  3 года назад +22

      Yeah I think you're right. I like your point about trying to make the exterior fit the interior, that makes a lot of sense.

    • @lordtelion
      @lordtelion 3 года назад +2

      They actually fixed a lot of those issues with the hp7 castle redesign, but most of the those problems weren't actually spawned from a disproprtioned model. They actually took a lot of time to make sure that the model was theorectically possible to make, that is that you could use stone and wood to build hogwarts as it looked and it wouldn't collaps under its own wait (wind is another matter). No the problem acctually can from all the differnt itterations of the castle all being slightly different from the previous ones, but they never changed any of the interior sets. Thus interior and exterior ceased to line up. But anyway personally I think a lot of the redesigns land this version squarely in shitsville. It just doesn't look visually pleasing, a lot of building are chubby and towers have been withered down to nothing (especially the bell towers), and if you look at how oversised the interiors are you can see why. Like that stair case had steps you could lie down on, edge to edge!
      But yeah, it is also totally possible to get the interior and exterior to fit, even without cheating, as long as you're willing to make small adjustmensts, no need to do anything this drastic.

    I'm excited about this because it appears that some of these changes were made in an effort to make a seamless castle with the interior matching the interior. The older games all had loading zones (and even multiple versions of Hogwarts) to hide that the interior couldn't fit.

    I know Ben keeps in consideration that the developers have built their game version of hogwarts keeping in mind “it’s an older version of the castle than we see in the films so it would look different”
    But I honestly disagree and I believe 0% of the castles cosmetic changes are about the time setting of the game and 100% to do with:
    a) fitting in with the art style the devs have chosen for the game
    And
    b) practicality. If the player is going to be able to explore most, if not all of Hogwarts, It must be functional to do so as much of what the films show us simply doesn’t make sense architecturally. From a game development perspective, practicality is imperative as well. It makes more sense to shrink the castle and/or some of its sections somewhat for a few reasons. Stability (for example: can the console and engine keep the game running?) and work/time (effort and time dedicated to designing exteriors, interiors, details, writing code and commands for NPCs, constructing lighting and environmental effects, combing through for bugs and glitches, etc.)
    What I’m trying to say is that I don’t think the developers have given a single slice of thought about whether or not the castle looks different because of when the games set… rather all design choices have been made from a game design and development perspective, including relevance to art style.
    That being said, I really liked your video and thought you made extremely valid points and analyses. I really like your channel and have subscribed❤️

    Im confused by what you were referring to by the viaduct. At first, it seemed you were speaking about the huge bridge connecting to the two wings, but then you said that they added it later on. This confused me, because when you look at images of the castle from the Philosopher’s Stone, that bridge is still there. Did they make it larger in the later films or something?

    • @hogwartsexpert
      @hogwartsexpert  2 года назад +1

      In philosopher's stone through to half blood prince, there is a viaduct that connects the two wings together. In Deathly Hallows they changed it so that the viaduct is bigger and connects the courtyard to a hill outside the castle, rather than the other wing.

    My favourite version of the castle is Chamber of Secrets. I love the chamber of reception (the room before the great hall from the first 3 movies), tower that rises from the viaduct entrance in those first two that has 4 turrets coming out the corners. that’s such a cool design. Also the training grounds tower looks infinitely better in the other movies. HBP it is just another bell tower.

    • @hogwartsexpert
      @hogwartsexpert  3 года назад +2

      I definitely have a lot of nostalgia for the Chamber of Secrets castle. Agreed about the training grounds. There's a kind of warmness in that version which is nice. However from an artistic point of view I quite like the additions made in Prisoner of Azkaban, the castle kind of feels more gothic in that film and I dig that.

    The problem with the Astronomy Tower in Half-Blood Prince is that it replaces BOTH the DADA Tower and the Dark Tower from PoA *AND* it's placed on top of the Transfiguration classroom. So you can either have the Transfiguration classroom, the DADA Tower, the Dark Tower and the Astronomy Tower in its old location *OR* the Astronomy Tower in its Half-Blood Prince location (it was also rotated for HBP). Personally, I prefer the Order of the Phoenix version of the castle, because I don't like how much it changed that area of Hogwarts when they decided to move the Astronomy Tower.

    • @hogwartsexpert
      @hogwartsexpert  2 года назад +3

      That's understandable! I think I just personally prefer the look of the astronomy to the DADA tower but that's just a matter of preference. The Dark Tower always annoyed me too because it looks like it would be so impractical and only exists to be a place for Sirius to escape from 😂

  • @Aperture_Works
    @Aperture_Works 3 года назад +7

    This is actually a good mixture of a few versions of Hogwarts as the Durham section is not the same as the bell towers compare more to the philosphers stone versions whereas the ravenclaw tower looks to be accurate to HbP the owlerly is also positioned were it was in deathly hallows and also they added the deathly hallows lookout tower and they have also moved the astronomy tower to where the old dada tower was (defence against the dark arts) but they have also added a lot of there own stuff in as well for example the circluler area outside the bell towers. They have also squashed Hogwarts down as the gst tower (grand staircase tower) is very small to how it should be and to go back to the great hall the front section is the size of the philosphers stone but the design of order of the Phoenix. So it’s not totally accurate to say as they have done there own version of Hogwarts :)

    • @hogwartsexpert
      @hogwartsexpert  3 года назад +3

      Yeah I love that they've found a balance between keeping to what's come before but also adding new features. I literally noticed yesterday that they've changed how the Owlery looks. There's what looks a bit like a viewing platform at the top, kind of akin to where Dumbledore falls off in the Astronomy tower.

    The actual problem is that if you study the castle in the movies and compare the outside to the interior, they don't match up. Not even close! That's okay for a movie where the outside is a model while the insides are actual locations. But for a game, the interior has to fit within the shell (unless you want to use non-Euclidean physics). For example, the grand staircase is a round tower on the outside in the movies, but square on the inside.

    I consider Hogwarts Legacy's geography to be more canonical than the movies, keeping in mind the time gap, of course. Change my mind.
    For instance, in the films, the Great Hall looks unconfortably tight and overcrowded-- a sign of bad design, especially considering the castle is supposed able to resize itself and be bigger on the inside --, most spaces look bland and outright inconsistent, stuff is missing or added which contradicts the source material, and the Great Staircase is really scuffed. The game is better.
    Of course it has its problems: the lake is supposed to be south, not east, Hogsmeade should be north of Hogwarts and Hogsmeade Station to the south of the lake, and the Forbidden Forest should be closer. But I have the impression Rowling sucks at geography and her own descriptions don't always make sense either; why is the West Wing to the east of the Quad? Unless the movie's castle is mirrored, of course.

    One thing that always bothered me was that the sundial at the end of the covered bridge disappears in the fifth movie onwards. I can’t figure out why, especially since it’s present on the big model of hogwarts at the studio tour which they used up until the sixth movie. The sundial is also present on the mini model of the deathly hallows castle which they also have at the studio tour but it was missing again in the actual movie. @@hogwartsexpert Neville's works well for that. It's only seen in the last 3 films (maybe not HP7.1, so 2) so most won't really pick up on it, but it has that cool wand aesthetic.
      Wands like Harry's, Hermione's, Voldemort's, or the Elder Wand would be way too recognisable.

      @@wariolandgoldpiramid good point, I think the proportions were slightly off in that game though. Have you ever visited the set at the Studio tour, it feels weirdly small and I don't know if that's because they've reduced the size of the set for the tour, or if it's just a matter of something looking bigger on film than real life. But yeah I think in the new game the fact that they've made it wider makes it feel shorter. Hard to tell though.

    • @winterburngaming9650
      @winterburngaming9650 3 года назад

      @@hogwartsexpert The pensive is the little bird bath Dumbledore stores memories in. It's theorized to have been created by one of the three brothers from the Deathly Hallows stories. The veil is speculated to have been created by one of the other two, and is the huge structure Sirius Black falls backwards into after being killed. The pensive allows for the preservation of memories and assumedly ideas, while the veil is a pathway straight to the world of the dead, though it isn't really super established.

      @winterburngaming9650 3 года назад

      @@hogwartsexpert Y'know, I've got no idea. I'd imagine the wizard created the pensive itself, but I suppose it would've been odd if he hadn't put some sort of shelter around it. Then again, I think this was the same one who wanted the cloak so he could hide from death. All this is mostly theory, anyhoo. Who knows what the truth is.
