I share Scott’s experience of moving a femur of a sauropod, while I was a volunteer for the Morrison Museum I had to help one of my colleagues move a chunk of a Camarasaurus femur and nearly passed out from it.
I wish I had money so I could download patreon, give to the skeleton Crew, and make my name "I'm 2 foot 3" so every episode James has to admit what his real height is
I’m on vacation so sadly can’t watch this all now, but all I’ll say is Mamenchisaurus holds a surprisingly important role in the Jurassic Swine lore. This is the moment where I pull off the cloak and expose you all to Paleo Idol.
That Shunosaurus segment in Dinosaur Revolution was such a fever dream. To whoever approved of, directed or animated that segment: You have my respect for putting something so ridiculous in a documentary. I would also like some of the psychedelic mushrooms that you were taking when creating that scene.
It's some interesting speculative behavior though. Imagine sauropods, in all their pea-brained glory, habitually getting high off mushrooms. That would be funny and terrifying.
Fun fact for any arcade gamers, mamenchisaurus & geosternbergia both appear in The Lost World arcade game as enemies. Funny how we got them back to back in the order they appear in the game
The same goes for cera, jp3 anky and cory but they are also in the game. Anything that appears or gets mentioned in the movies gets added into the game no matter their importance in the movie
I mean, it has a movie appearance, that alone puts it above any non movie species in terms of priority. Also interestingly it was actually supposed to be seismosaurus, but marketing called it a mamenchisaurus, even through the movie design doesn't resemble one at all
LOVE this episode. I learned a lot about Mamenchisaurus!! I'm also super excited about Geosternbergia!!! I love pterosaurs! Toward the end of it's section in Oceans of Kansas, there's a throwaway line that saying theres a 6 foot skull of Geosternbergia in private hands. Wild!
I literally just ordered the built different pin, I'm so excited! Shipping was kinda painful as I live in the UK (I know, i dont want to be here either) but worth it for the pin and to support the channel! ❤
11:47 Sauropods are already freaky and probably would be some of the nastiest and loudest prehistoric animals ever to exist (So much waste and noise, two of the things I hate about owning cats), but the fact that Titanosaurs basically don’t have fingers or knuckles and just walk on their wrists NEVER fails to freak me out.
I’m really sad Frontier didn’t give this guy just a little more TLC for the game. A longer tail and better colors really could have made this my favorite sauropod.
Mah man, chi! I do like it. It's rather plain, but it's as good as any sauropods should be. Plus the attention to detail with the head is absolutely lovely, more proof that no matter the end result the artists at Frontier are doing their absolute best.
5:10 Not Amelia being the "real customer" in the sparkling water osteoporosis endorsement from last week's episode. Also while we're sharing tooth traumas, I've split both of my upper right premolars almost clean in half; first time on a popcorn kernel, the second one was a few years later eating popcorn chicken. Both were milk teeth, fortunately. Also, congrats on the Yale union now! I was wondering how that went.
I swear they need to have more zoo keepers inform on game elements here! Elevated feeders are a thing! Zoo tycoon 2 had them! Also the mushroom trip scene made me have dread for the idea of the poor Jurassic Vet staff having to potentially examine or sedate one of the sauropods. Like cows and other large animals are super dangerous going into and coming out of sedation/ tranquilization. ( true anesthesia is probably not feasible with things this big. No way you could intubate that long a neck without heavy equipment.)
4th time in a row I written this, but since you haven't seen this. Here it is: DID YOU KNOW, Ceratosaurus teeth have been found in Uruguay's Tacuarembó Formation 🇺🇾. So the distribution of this genus extends to southern South América
possible hot take: I love Nigersaurus and Amargasaurus and they're my favorite sauropods in the game. all the really big ones just fall flat for me for one reason or another. I will now accept my public beating and humiliation.
When you guys finish this series, are you going to move onto another game like this or stick with this game review modded dinosaurs or something? There are plenty more interesting prehistoric animals that aren't in the main game that I think would be interesting to hear you guys speak on
A pretty neat dino but kinda wish it was more similar to its depiction in TLW even though it was very brief. I thought it was cool that it was a long noodle-neck lizard there and its sound design (again, while brief) was super distinctive. Not sure if there's any evidence to suggest it had a more horizontal neck posture or vertical but both portrayals look good. Also make James Napoli 2028 happen. 😃
31:15 I'm surprised there's not some kind of machine to flip large bones like that. It would probably be less time consuming and safer/less of a hassle for the preparators. Seems like a worthwhile investment.
I've made the mistake of imagining these things doing that stupid green heron thing where they keep themselves nice and compact and then instantaneously triple their body length when they stretch their necks. That's a thought that's never getting out of my head now.
I miss the TLW Mamenchisaurus (Idc if it's just scaled up Diplodocus) but I do really like this more updated design. It's properly restrained in terms of coloring while still being appealing and it's a good example of updating a movie design to the science of today while still not abandoning the appeal of the original. I do wish it got a TLW variant tho.
I'm pretty sure Mamenchisaurus' family has the most neck vertebrae of any sauropod (at least 17), the only other dino with this many neck vertebrae is Miragaia/Dacentrurus which is a stegosaur.
I watched this over a span of 5 hours or more because of home stuff So I don't have or at least don't remember if I had anything clever or funny to say, sooooo ✨Algorithm boost✨ 😃👍
To you guys at the Skeleton Crew, I'm a little confused by what you are calling Barosaurus. Is the mounted skeleton when you first walk in to the American Museum Of Natural History in New York (the one where it is rearing up on its back legs to fend off an attacking Allosaurus) a specimen of Barosaurus, or has that specimen been determined to be a completely different sauropod altogether? Could you please elaborate on this?
The animal that can unite all the Asian Stegosaur Gangs. I wish we had more Jurassic Asian Dinosaurs. Yangchuanasaurus would be a great carnivore, Shunosaurus would be a good Sauropod. We have too many Stegosaur gangs that don’t like each other. I also want more animals from Jurassic Africa, so Kentro doesn’t have to be alone.
Scott's pronunciation of "situ" sounded so much like "sítio" (place) from Brazilian portuguese that I had to pause and listed to that again. Is that the most common way english-speakers pronounce "situ"?
1:01:46 I had no idea mosasaurs didn't have hip bones. Were the back limbs connected to a different bone or did they hang free form like with cetaceans?
They were held in place only by ligaments & muscles - they completely lost the bony connection to the spine, like in whales, but unlike in whales, they don't totally lose function of the hindlimbs! -Amelia
I'm pretty sure sin-raptor (like sin, kin, etc) would be the correct English way to say that word, but science needs to be "fancy" and "defy logic" with its words just to sound smart
"Damn this water crunchy."
- Amelia just before her flight
Idk how else to describe this other than Scott looks like the kind of guy that would say "gee-willikers". Does that make sense to anybody else?
Oh most definitely thats why we love him
why is this the second time this week I've seen "the type of person to say "gee-willikers"" as a description
I share Scott’s experience of moving a femur of a sauropod, while I was a volunteer for the Morrison Museum I had to help one of my colleagues move a chunk of a Camarasaurus femur and nearly passed out from it.
28:50 "We don't know anything, and all of these animals could be anywhere, uhh, good day" pretty much sums up my expertise on prehistoric animals 😂
Next week the good Pteranodon design in the game, P. sternbergi
This drops as I walk into the field museum.
Man we both have to miss the new episode :(
😔
Have a great day there! Don’t forget to see their actual Daspletosaurus skull in the lower level display case.
If I ever get into grad school I’ll write a Tschopp-esque specimen-level review of Mamenchisauridae and sort all this out
I wish I had money so I could download patreon, give to the skeleton Crew, and make my name "I'm 2 foot 3" so every episode James has to admit what his real height is
20:39 When Alex said Mamenchisaurus was the most primitive sauropod in the game my jaw dropped.
I’m on vacation so sadly can’t watch this all now, but all I’ll say is Mamenchisaurus holds a surprisingly important role in the Jurassic Swine lore.
This is the moment where I pull off the cloak and expose you all to Paleo Idol.

This animal’s inclusion is so weird, it appears for a few seconds in TLW & that’s it, it never appears again in the franchise.
There are like 70 animals that never appear ln the movies. Are they useless now?
The same goes for cera, jp3 anky and cory but they are also in the game. Anything that appears or gets mentioned in the movies gets added into the game no matter their importance in the movie
