However I didn’t want to reshoot these videos because then it wouldn’t be an authentic first time reaction. Future videos won’t have this problem. Thank you for your understanding ❤❤❤
The song is a metaphor for the river of life, the river will take your only child isn't in a physical sense, it's you loosing your child hood as you travel down the rivers twist and turns of your life as you are growing into adult hood..Marcos character wants you to fail, floor wants you to succeed..that's my take on it anyway! Great reaction as usual..
@@themetalmuse Dragonslayer's take on the lyrics is absolutely correct. One thing to remember about Nightwish's lyrics is that they are never to be taken at literal face value. Every song is a metaphorical poem that feeds into a much bigger story representing the theme of the whole album. Everything is a symbolic metaphor for something else. It takes a while to get used to that, given the airheaded, throwaway lyrics we are typically presented with in the American music market. But once you get the hang of Tuomas's style and start to get familiar with the stories, it's another whole dimension to the rabbit hole (ironically that's also a metaphor).
This song is such a banger! My all-time favorite Nightwish moment is when Emppu does a little hop at the beginning of the breakdown, then strikes Guitar God poses as he rips his harmonics! A very dark song from our favorite band, but it just kicks ass! The interchange between the dark and the light is just simply spectacular. Nice that you noticed some of the small things ... and you did grin at Emppu's little hop, so that made me smile! Emppu is a show within himself. I've never seen anybody who I think enjoys playing as much as our Electric Hobbit! He is pure joy! Well done!
my absolute favorite part/s of this song, lyrically, is how both Marko and Floor are singing two different lyrics until they match *perfectly* on 'then do come across'
Not sure if you noticed but the back-and-forth banter between Marco and Floor wasn't only dark on Marco's side. The ending parts at 02:56 and 04:53 "Believe it, we live as we scream..." is Floor doing the deep dark growls that fade out the phrase!
@@themetalmuse The album version Annette Falsettos "Scream", over Marko's "Dream". in concert Floor switched it to growling below Marko. Both work great, and play to each singer's strengths.
"Never lose your heart, and (stick twirl) do come across!" I love the way they go off in different directions, then come back together. Emppu jumping across the stage!
Hi Dom! From Insta, I can see that you like growling too! I cannot imagine how you haven't reacted to EPICA still, which combines operatic and growling voices under marvellous symphonic compositions, with splended lyrics! Angel&Devil in the same suit! Greetings from Greece!
Another great reaction. Song is from the Imaginaerum album, a concept album that explores life and existence through the flashbacks of an old composer upon his deathbed. Tuomas has said that when celebrating life you have to have the dark side of life as well and this song and another (Rest Calm) are those dark songs on the album. I have seen several interpretations of the lyrics. The first is where Marko's character is the devil or a troll luring children to the river to drown and Floor's character is Mother Gaia trying to protect them. Another, related to Finnish folklore, is that Floor's character is an evil spirit trying to lure children to their death and Marko's character is like a parent trying to scare children away from the river by telling terrifying stories about what will happen to them if they approach the river. I read that in the old days Finnish parents would tell scary tales about Nixie (folklore character)luring children to their death in rivers and lakes as a way to keep them from playing near them. You can take it a step further and say that the river represents life and we can either join in the adventure as Floor's Mother Gaia character encourages us to do (Leave footprints on every island we meet) or be scared off by Marko's prophecy's of doom and bad endings and not even try.
Hey Dom, greetings from Denmark. You've gain a new subscriber. Great reaction. And, yes, Emppu (guitarist) is a fun guy and do funny things or pranks on stage.
You have to really understand the movie that went with this album to see how it fits in. Tuomas often uses the metaphor of a river as representing the flow of life, with a beginning and an end. You can't stop the flow, but enjoy the ride, taking both the good, the bad and the scary as it comes by along the shore. "It's a scary ride we'd give anything to take." Also, Wacken is always worth revisiting, there is not a bad song.
@@themetalmuseI have noticed and I am loving every reaction so far. Perfect timing, too, especially since it has been 10 years since that concert happened! 😎🤘

Tuomas and Kai are members in a Melodic Black Metal band Darkwoods My Betrothed, which predates Nightwish. They released some new material just couple years back. Tuomas has also collaborated with other dark toned Metal bands like E.g. Kotiteollisuus. Kai is a member also in Wintersun, which combines also dark elements of Metal in their songs. Marco's one other band Tarot is one of the Finnish Metal pioneers from the early 80s. Their most popular song is "Wings of Darkness". There's a 80s version with young Marco and a 25th Anniversary version available of that song. One other Marco's band is Sapattivuosi, which is a Black Sabbath tribute band. And he also has collaborated with other bands. One of those bands is Waltari, which made one of the first Symphonic Metal albums, which was released in 1996, the same year Nightwish was founded. So there's Nightwish relating darkness there to go together with your ominous looks, if you want to do some further looking into.
@@themetalmuse One song on which Tuomas and Kotiteollisuus have collaborated is the Finnish version of "Pandemonium" released on the Killing Joke tribute album. The album starts with Metallica's version of "The Wait" and ends with Kotiteollisuus, which is funny, because Kotiteollisuus is often regarded as the Finnish Metallica. One other Finnish link to Metallica is a band called Stone. While visiting Finland, Metallica might have picked a riff for "Enter Sandman" from Stone's song " Get Stoned".
Glad you're enjoying Nightwish. There is no bad song at this concert but many more recent performances with some excellent renditions from Floor. Wembley 2015 is great. Tampere is pretty much the same set but still has some great versions. Then maybe a short detour to Tampa 2016 for one song, Sahara, and on to the Decades tour live in Buenos Aires 2018/19.
yeah sometimes that river of life sometimes takes you places you may not want to go and may not want to take anyone either but it is called ghost river for a reason with those metallica size bass tones that marcko does very very well
The song seem to be about facing up to danger and your fears to get what you want or need. In this case, crossing a dangerous river to get to the other side "If you want me, do come across. Facing danger like this is also one of the times we most feel alive. "A scary ride we'll do anything to take". So basically, don't let fear/danger stop you from living life to the full. A concept Tuomas has touched upon in other songs.
I interpret this song as the battle between the dark and the light (Marko vs. Floor) for departing souls as they cross the "Ghost River" to their final destinations, heaven or hell.

I believe that the song references children needing to cross a river. This is the battle between the mother Gaia and the Devil. One wanting to pull them down downing into the river and Gaia beckoning them across.
Yep, they can go pretty dark! 😂 Yet they also go contemplative, introspective, or just make you feel damn good about the simple fact of your existence. These guys run the whole gamut of experience - which is just one of the things that make them *so damn good* .
One of the heaviest songs on the 2011 Imaginaerum album, 2nd and final recorded with Anette. Love the back and forth vocals. Floor with a bit of growl in this performance, she doesn't do much of that with Nightwish , just one other song that was written for her on the next album after this show. I agree, love Jukka's stick twirls, he has some pretty good ones. Emppu (guitar) is the band jokester, he is almost always smiling and having fun, and is all over the stage. Yes Everdream is next followed by Storytime, which you also did already. The next one you haven't done is song #7 ,I Want My Tears Back.
Nightwish Army south Brittany France reporting. No body was looked at the tool bar.😊 Dark v light, creepy children lyrics, Emppu shredding. Floors range on show, soft then growls. So many assume Marco growls, nope, ive not looked at your playlist, have you done "yours is an empty hope"?
The movie that they made that uses the music associated (Imaginaerum) is a mixture of dark and light - the idea being that there is darkness, but we can rise above it. There are songs in the set list that aren't from this album (or even Anette, for whom this was originally set around). Some of these songs were from the Tarja (first singer) era. "Wish I had an Angel", "Ever Dream", and "Ghost Love Score" are songs from the Tarja era that I think of immediately (Floor does a great job - but these songs aren't new). In fact, a lot of the songs at Wacken were Tarja era songs. "Bless the Child", "Nemo", "Dark Chest of Wonders", and "Romanticide" were also Tarja era songs. Out of the 15 songs on the set list at Wacken, seven were from Tarja era, the rest were Imaginaerum album songs. This isn't a surprise as many bands mix older music with new for fans. Compared to the even darker songs from the Dark Passion Play album, where Tuomas worked out his depression and anger leading to the firing of Tarja, it is a much darker album. "The Poet and the Pendulum" is basically a suicide in a song about Tuomas. "Master, Passion, Greed" - directed at Tarja's husband - sung by Marco is brutal and VERY heavy metal. "Bye, Bye, Beautiful" is directed at Tarja. Tuomas would later say that Imaginaerum was his walking away from the anger and grief and toward creativity and more positive outlooks. Then again, the band was still fighting with Anette during the development. Who knows. Anette likes to sing things her way, and changing to the way fans are used to singing from other singers wasn't always pleasant for Nightwish fans. When Anette is singing her music - even live - it sounds fine. That music tends to be written specifically for her. Tuomas writes his way and hopes Nightwish singers will abide. Tarja mostly did. Floor mostly does (though she adapts it to necessary breathing, which Tuomas accepts as necessary). The band has evolved in other ways. Originally, the band was like most young bands - all members put forth 110% of their attention to the band and anything less was unacceptable. When Tarja decided she wanted a life, this didn't sit well with the band. Ditto Anette. By the time Floor was becoming a more permanent member, Nightwish group members were getting families of their own. Tuomas got married somewhere along the way. Jukka was having medical problems and bowed out while picking his successor. Marco leaving was due to health, but also to his family. Floor having a baby is less of a problem to the band than back when Anette was pregnant. The band is in a better place.
Wow thank you for such a detailed account! That helps give it all so much more context. I have reacted to Ghost Love Score, Nemo, Romanticide and Dark Chest of Wonders so far. Let me know what you think! Although there's been a lot of change I am excited to see what this band does in the future.
IMHO - The Ghost River is a metaphor representing the journey we all must travel in life. We have no choice but to take the ride and go for our dreams. It's a scary ride filled with dangers and tragic twists and turns. Marko and Floor and playing spiritual roles giving warning (Marko) and in Floor's case encouragement. The dangers along the way are a constant threat to harden your heart and steal your dreams and the innocence of youth. Always remember these concepts are being used as imagery and metaphors. Including the R word. Tuomas wrote this one stating that darkness is always a part of everyone's life. We all must struggle through these times to chase your dreams. Emppu doing the crab leap. So funny looking. My favorite lines from Floor. She is speaking to all of us with encouragement and wisdom. "Beautifully shy as you are, Never lose your heart and do come across". Do you hear the message Dom?
Hope you noticed how Floor goes from melodic and ethereal to growling (she's the one doing all the growling in this song) in response to Marko's lyrics
If you leave your mouse cursor over the control bar at the bottom, it will not go away. Move your cursor above that area, and the control bar will disappear after a couple seconds or so. Nightwish is not always this dark, of course, but their lyrics go many places! And yes, Emppu did a little crab walk! 🦀😂
Hiya Dom Dom, greetings from a Welshman living in England 😁 Another fantastic set of ramblings, thank you 😂😉 There are a few dark lyrics out there, but the vast majority are not
This song is all about contrast. Marko is a river demon trying to lure children to their deaths and Floor is Gaia, the spirit of the Earth, attempting to guide them safely across. Notice that Marko's line is "We live as we scream" and Floor's line is "We live as we dream" in the chorus. Tuomas is not above using shock tactics to set the mood 😁 You can definitely see it used to great effect in Poet and the Pendulum.
This song is from "Imaginaerum" (the seventh studio album from Anette era). Marko has great menacing tone here , and Floor Growls ( only few will notes this ). Plus , this song has a crazy Van Halen Vibe to it, especially opening riff ( Van Halen - Aint Talkin' Bout Love comes to mind ). This song took me several listens and deep dive at first , and now I listen this song daily . Love this song !!! NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘
Just to paraphrase from Game of Thrones "if you think this going to have a happy ending, you clearly have not been paying attention..." The lyrics from Tuomas are dark, but it is not like they are laden with profanities and vulgarity. They are more like dark poetry... The words are not dark, but the meaning behind them usually is very sinister. And he uses a lot of big words. Something you'd find in a poem.
As many times as I've heard this song, I never really paid attention to the lyrics but I do have a thought. The river is our life, and as we cross it we can choose to listen to the negative or embrace the positive within us. P.S. did you catch Floor doing a little growl on "scream"
I believe Marco is trying to scare people with his tale and Floor is trying to lure people in with hers, so Marco's dark lines are meant as a warning tale whereas Floor's sweet lines are bait for the unwary!! You decide who is good and evil in this...🤣
Not all the lyrics are dark...but most of them hava a meaning....and if you like the back and forth between Floor and Marko: Just take a note to look at "Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean" and "Slaying the Dreamer" you will love these...but for now: I am really looking forward to "Bless the Child" from Wacken...and especially "Song of Myself".... All Hail Queen Floor !
I think this happens a couple of times during the song and once is at about 4:55 of YOUR video, not the Nightwish original. You will hear a very low growl and it is NOT Marko -- it's Floor. Kind of spooky actually. Listen again for "homework".
This is a very confusing song. On one hand I want to cross the river to go to Floors side however there seems to be a chance that I die a painful death. Maybe by a thousand cuts. Lol
dark lyrics like this is coming from the happiest country in the world, shows the irony about Finnish music, but nightwish is best rock band i ever known, being raised listening nightwish makes all foreign rock bands reaaaally bland, they cant compere to opera style rock and metal songs nightwish has
Yet another one with way to low volume, please fix it.We with BT headphones cannot raise the volume more than max it and it's way too low. You need to fic your videos with higher volume as a base
You can't have you own voice beeing 100% and then the video 25%. Then if we rasisw the volume to enjoy the video we almost get deaf when you start speaking.
There is no order! I hate you think you have to do that, Do any Nightwish song you want, don't follow a script. Don't be the same as every other reaction where they follow a list. This guy who uses Anne as a scapegoat to become synonymous with the band is so annoying.

Volume low for anyone else?

Thank you for the insights!

Hiya Dom Dom, greetings from a Welshman living in England 😁
Another fantastic set of ramblings, thank you 😂😉
There are a few dark lyrics out there, but the vast majority are not
Hi! Thank you for watching and for commenting 🙏🙏🤘
Try to download them first and play them offline with vlc or any other player so you won't get those messages on the top.
Great reaction by the way
Ahhhhh good idea!!!
I can't wait to react to that song. Quite a few people have recommended it. I am working my way through the Wacken setlist. It's such a treat!
You're spot on about the Van Halen vibes! Thank you for watching ❤️
Just to paraphrase from Game of Thrones "if you think this going to have a happy ending, you clearly have not been paying attention..."
The lyrics from Tuomas are dark, but it is not like they are laden with profanities and vulgarity. They are more like dark poetry... The words are not dark, but the meaning behind them usually is very sinister. And he uses a lot of big words. Something you'd find in a poem.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
He was the bass and she was the melody.
To me the vocals were almost like an orchestra, but spoken out loud
100%
Thanks
You need to review "Yours is an empty hope". Floor in a different style.
Ok going to add this to my "to do" list.
You definitely need more volume, your mic is twice as loud as the video....Great reaction though

As many times as I've heard this song, I never really paid attention to the lyrics but I do have a thought. The river is our life, and as we cross it we can choose to listen to the negative or embrace the positive within us.
P.S. did you catch Floor doing a little growl on "scream"
🤗🍒🤘🏻😘
Hey you! Nice to see you again 🙏
👏👍👍
🙌🙌🙌🙌
If you don't mind dark lyrics, try The Poet and the Pendulum from Wacken 2015 gig. That's the best song they have for my taste.
Oh that's coming up! Very excited for it.
Turn the video up for us please 🏴
🤘
I believe Marco is trying to scare people with his tale and Floor is trying to lure people in with hers, so Marco's dark lines are meant as a warning tale whereas Floor's sweet lines are bait for the unwary!! You decide who is good and evil in this...🤣
I like that description!
God save the Queen!
Good one.
Thank you! Cheers!
Turn up the volume

Nightwish is all about light snd shade, good and bad, positive and negative, because that's life isn't it 🤔
Very true! ❤️
It's like Red Riding Hood and the Wolf vibe
it totally is!
🐕
🤷♀️ dog?
I think this happens a couple of times during the song and once is at about 4:55 of YOUR video, not the Nightwish original. You will hear a very low growl and it is NOT Marko -- it's Floor. Kind of spooky actually. Listen again for "homework".
Ahhhh it is!
Be nice if I could hear it!

If you like crazy drumming have a look at El Estepario Siberiano.

This is a very confusing song. On one hand I want to cross the river to go to Floors side however there seems to be a chance that I die a painful death. Maybe by a thousand cuts. Lol
She's the siren and Marco is the demon waiting for you!
@@themetalmuse yes, and still worth trying to cross the river!

dark lyrics like this is coming from the happiest country in the world, shows the irony about Finnish music, but nightwish is best rock band i ever known, being raised listening nightwish makes all foreign rock bands reaaaally bland, they cant compere to opera style rock and metal songs nightwish has
🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Yet another one with way to low volume, please fix it.We with BT headphones cannot raise the volume more than max it and it's way too low. You need to fic your videos with higher volume as a base
You can't have you own voice beeing 100% and then the video 25%. Then if we rasisw the volume to enjoy the video we almost get deaf when you start speaking.
Volume really low on music video

There is no order! I hate you think you have to do that, Do any Nightwish song you want, don't follow a script. Don't be the same as every other reaction where they follow a list. This guy who uses Anne as a scapegoat to become synonymous with the band is so annoying.
Thank you. The only reason I am doing it in order is I want the experience as if I was there, sad I know but it's the closet I can get without inventing time travel.
@@themetalmuse NIghtwish is over 20 years old. You don't need to follow a script. A True Nightwish fan does not care who the singer is. Floor, Tarja or Annette. It does not matter.
