    Supertramp are so underrated. Easily one of the top ten bands of all time. I have them in my top three. Their albums "Crime of the Century", "Breakfast in America" and "Even in the Quietest Moments" are full of songs just begging to be reacted to.

    • @j0hnn13K
      @j0hnn13K Месяц назад +2

      I would not say underrated, but rather more the corner of "overlooked".
      Most people know at least 1 or 2 songs subconsciously, via, radio/tv/movie/bars/clubs etc, but would not know any title or even know who Supertramp are.
      But the moment you play one of those songs to them they recognize the songs to some degree.
      And not going to claim everyone of those subconscious people, will say "i love that song", but quite a few will, never knowing the band is called Supertramp.
      But let's not overlook the most obvious group who would say "yeah i love Supertramp" right away... are Gen X and they will say the band is criminally overlooked, but certainly not underrated... :P

    • @j0hnn13K
      @j0hnn13K Месяц назад +2

    Saw these guys on their last tour through the US. They had just wrapped a STADIUM tour in Europe, and Boston's 4500 seat and indoor Wang Center was their first US stop. Their flight was late, and they went on stage 90 minutes late. Clearly, there was no time for rehearsals.
    They blew us out!!! The volume was so much greater than it should have been because of no rehearsal and setting things for outdoor venues. Hearing this crisp sound at 100db was an amazing experience. Rudy, in particular, sticks with me as one of the best matches of geaphics to sound. You're rolling along looking out the front window of a train, and every time the train changed tracks there was a matching guitar twitch and after 8 minutes of rolling through this and all the momentum building, it just stops abruptly at the station. Mind blown when it ended!

    I remember hearing Supertramp for the first time on the radio and immediately went out and bought "Crime of the Century."
    Their output over the next few years was superb and their music is timeless.

      You can tell them they're from Britain and it has a different meaning there. "In the UK, a tramp is a person who has no home, job, or money, and who lives outside. They usually travel from place to place, asking people for food or money." Though that is pretty funny. "They mentioned a classic soft rock band with a questionable name!" *clutches pearls*

    Good morning, Aileen! Thank you so much for finally exploring Supertramp, a band so unique they could never be pigeon-holed into one style or comparison. Their sound was a blend of Rock, Folk, R&B, Funk, Jazz, Classical, and Pop. Most members were multi-instrumentalists and could apply their skills in pretty much any style they chose to explore. I've seen them three times (the last after Roger Hodgson left the band) and once catching Roger's solo show where he played only the songs he wrote. Every single concert was a wonderful experience, each different from the others.
    This song is from their most commercially successful album, Breakfast In America. It's a great album but pales in comparison to Crime Of The Century and Even In The Quietest Moments, two of the finest albums of the 1970s.
    Suggested songs for a better understanding of the band include School, Bloody Well Right, Hide In Your Shell, Asylum, Dreamer, Rudy, Crime of the Century, Easy Does It, Sister Moonshine, Poor Boy, Two Of Us, Give A Little Bit, Even In The Quietest Moments, Downstream, Babaji, Fool's Overture, The Logical Song, Goodbye Stranger, Breakfast In America, Take The Long Way Home, Lord Is It Mine, Child Of Vision. All of those are from Supertramp's biggest three albums with a couple from a fourth.

    So I have been to two Supertramp concerts, The Breakfast in America and Famous Last Words tour. Their concert is all about the music. They would sit down with their instruments and for the next 2 1/2 to 3 hours it was just pure musical magic. Supertramp has two lead singers, Roger Hodgson, the one singing in this song, and Rick Davies with his soulful voice. So sometimes you will hear one singing and with other songs it will be the other. Once you go down the Supertramp rabbit hole there will be nothing but magic and soul.

    Hi Aileen 😊 Completely spot on and brilliant reaction and analysis to Supertramp's' Take the Long Way Home. I've read all the comments and a few mentioned your analysis in relating to Pink Floyd's song Time to Supertramp 's lyric "when you look through the years and see what you could have been oh what you might have been if you would have more time". Your analysis of this jumped everybody's brain except for a couple and that just tells me how much you've grown and I'm very proud of you. Your critical thinking is astounding. It is a sad concept to look back at what could have been/what might have been instead of pursuing towards a goal. Not saying that the pursuit won't take twists and turns and side roads on the way to the goal... that's part of the experience. Truthfully, the joy is in the pursuit.
    Roger Hodgson sings about how after so much time on the road, you want to take the long way home, either due to homesickness (just want to go back to your house, no matter how convoluted the road back is) or not having reasons to return (why return and feel diminished by an ignoring wife?).
    "I really believe we all want to find our home, find that place in us where we feel at home, and to me, home is in the heart and that is really, when we are in touch with our heart and we’re living our life from our heart, then we do feel like we found our home."
    Even though there is a literal meaning behind the lyrics, art is interpretive and each person take this piece of art and apply it to their lives... that's the beauty of art. Once again Aileen, you are the best because you allow the music to encompass you... envelope you...allowing you to feel the experience and thereby come to an understanding of the intention. All the recommendations are fantastic and I look forward to your reactions and analysis of each. Have a great day you and Arya with much love 😊👍💪❤️👑👑

    Supertramp was so different in sound/style and messaging than most of the other groups at the time that it was mind blowing. There is good reason why their album Breakfast In America shot to the top (Great title track too btw). With songs like Take The Long Way Home, The Logical Song (pay close attention to the lyrics, perhaps even have them ready to read along with as it's actually a pretty deep song) and Dreamer they took the world by storm. You're absolutely right about the fact that we, as musicians, seem to experience music differently than nonmusicians. Not saying better, just different. We seem to live and breathe it as we listen
