I got one of these on the same lease deal. For reference, I have an R8 V10 and my wife's daily is a Macan. This is the best all-around car I've ever had. It's quicker and handles better than the R8 and the ride is amazing. Yes, the electronic nannies are very annoying. I counted 14 taps, button pushes, swipes to get the car settings back to how they were when I turned it off, but that is not completely unique to EVs. But you can turn off permanently the lane assist. And there is a button to turn off TC.
But as Ed points out, the depreciation is brutal and this lease is the only way I'd ever have one. Looking forward to taking it to the Tail of the Dragon. I think I can make it there and back on a full charge.

    • @mjeholdings2013
      @mjeholdings2013 10 месяцев назад +11

@@thomasdeshler3327 I think in the original video Ed said the lease was somewhere around $200/month. Well, that $2400 is about the difference between the price and the residual after $40K in discounts. Add in taxes (I'm in TN), their money factor and a couple of required add-ons and the final price is closer to around $1000/month.
To help me justify that price in my mind I figure my other cars will have fewer miles, wear, maintenance, etc. The lease also includes free charging at Electrify America chargers. There's one close by so I shouldn't need to buy much premium for the next year. Also, it's 7500 miles included and $0.25/mile over.

There are no wires to cut. Once the lithium cells are punctured, the stored energy will continue to be released until the chemical fuel is exhausted (or you can deprive the cells of oxygen to extinguish the fire). I suppose EV manufacturers could place the batteries in an armored case, but that would probably add unmanageable weight and expense to the vehicle.

It’s great when people don’t take the time to look at the manual and then complain about functions that are easy to turn off.
I’ve owne an etron and now have an etron S. Both have fairly putrid range compared to Teslas, but are unmatched in terms of a more luxury car experience than many EV’s and importantly, the fact that their EV SUV’s feel similar to drive to their ICE equivalents.
Once Audi figures out their battery range issue, the product will really be stellar, but for now, they have to fit your use case to make sense. It sounds like this car is perfect for his wife’s use case currently and fortunately, he got a great deal on it. Drive this for utility and hop in the Lambo when you want to drive for ‘fun’.

I had Taycan for 6 months on a lease. It was great, probably the best driving experience of my life. But, it was great if your trip is within its’ range (i.e. from home to hotel is within the range, so you can charge at the destination). Everything above is just not worth it now! From my place to Vienna (Austria) is cca850 km. This meant 3 charging stops, compared to one fuel stop. And that translates to 2,5 hours longer trip with Taycan compared to my Volvo V90 CC diesel. Currently not worth it.

I have one as a daily. I LOVE it. I agree with Ed that the lane keep and other electronic nannies are super annoying so I keep those all turned off at all times. For comfort, speed and ease of use as a daily it is amazing. Under "normal" driving I've found the range is dead on. Yes, if you launch from every stop you will burn it down a lot faster but with tire being $2K/ set the novelty of launching begins to wear off fast. I have 2017 and 2022 Model X as well and the fit, finish, and driving experience on the Audi is so much better. My only real gripe about the car is I wish it had another 100 miles of range and Electrify America sucks compared to Tesla. 80% of the time you pull up to a charger station on or more is offline and they rarely charge at full speed. Because of that, for longer trips that require more than one charge stop to get there I still have a gas vehicle.

For a driving enthusiast, it's going to be hard to see much advantage in an EV outside of straight-line acceleration. But for the rest of us who see cars as an appliance to get from point A to point B, a new EV is incredible. Just power on and go, quiet, and the electronic nannies to make sure you're not dozing off when the light turns green.

I am a car enthusiast thru and thru. I can name the internal chassis codes on most performance models going back to the 60's. I grew up riding ATV's and dirtbikes. I've owned several manual transmission cars and as soon as I have enough disposable cash when the kids graduate, I'm buying another manual transmission, gas engined car. Because like Ed, I'm a car enthusiast. Hearing the screaming engine of an NA V8 or V12 at full throttle literally makes the hair on my arms stand up.
Why is it so hard to admit, that for the 99.99999999% of people who are on the roads with us, an EV is ACTUALLY A BETTER DRIVING EXPERIENCE!
They have gobs of torque right off the line, perfect for 0-60 where majority of commuting takes place. They're dead silent. They have very low maintenance. They're cheaper to operate. No getting gas on your hands/car during fill-ups. No trips to the gas station anymore, just remember to plug it in every time you pull back into the driveway. If you can remember to plug your phone in at night you can remember to plug your car in. No emissions sitting in traffic with the windows open in the summer.
We purchased an EV for my wife 3 years ago as an experiment. Just to see if she would like it, and if it would save us money. We were fully commited to losing money on it and sell it after a year if it didn't work out. Well 3 years of driving it and she told me she would NEVER drive another ICE car. It's just that much better. And we're paying 1/4 the price per mile vs her last car just to drive down the road.
EV's are just better in almost every way for the majority of people who are driving their cars as appliances. Stop commenting on them only from the view of car enthusiasts. Because that's not who they're designed for.

You nailed it, a properly designed BEV supposed to be Driver's Car. The inherent packaging such as central battery location, Rear Wheel Drive biased in most cases, lack of weight in the nose and lots of space for bulky complex suspensions geometry. Produces cars that are actually fun in the corners not just in a straight line. "EV’s are for people who think of driving as a chore" bad assumption realy annoys me, these are cars you have fun with along the to destination. If you don't need to drive more than 150 miles that day, you can hoon it and not care about the range. You'll have a full charge tomorrow waiting for you to have fun again. The only area EVs cant compete is Engine Sound which not great on most ICE cars. Oh also the new ones also just look awesome on the outside.

Many of us are NOT in that majority. Until charging for a 300 mile range can be done in 10 minutes or less- at any location in the most rural areas, I will not have an EV.
If I lived in a major metropolitan area, an EV might make sense.
The visceral experience of a fine German or Italian ICE vehicle is not eclipsed by quick acceleration.

    • @Armour783
      @Armour783 10 месяцев назад +1

@@joelspaulding5964 Your not getting it. That's the point I was trying to make. You and I aren't in the majority. Therefore automakers are going to continue NOT making cars for us.
"The visceral experience of a fine German or Italian ICE vehicle" doesn't matter or factor into 99.9% of vehicle purchases, for the majority of people - non enthusiasts.
So far, the only people I've encountered that think charging is an issue are those who haven't lived with an EV. Like me. I thought charging would be an issue. But after 3 years and 30,000 miles I realize it's just not. Do we need to solve charging availability. Yes. Do we need to solve charging reliability. Yes. But if I gave a free EV to the average person for a year to use. I would bet money on it 90% of people wouldn't go back. I know we won't.
And before you come back at me with "my situation is different!". GOOD! Continue to buy what works for your use case. And if you need an ICE vehicle to take frequent long trips, buy that. And if you need to tow things frequently, good. Buy a diesel truck. But survey after survey shows that a majority of people aren't taking these mythical every other weekend 500+ mile road trips.

Hi Ed, been a fan of your channel(s) for a while. Hope everything is fantastic with your family and yourself.
I wanted to point out that at 7:35, you speak up about the dangers of electric vehicles catching fire, and a little later on you say "the government intervention (is going to solve the problems) that we've already seen. The policies which have already made them so inexpensive-". I'm not sure if you mispoke, or what your take on the topic is, but I'd like to point out that what you said is what economists consider fallacious.
The "No Free Lunch" fallacy is the one I'm referring to. Say I build Lamborghinis, and my business is quite good. But, my Lamborghinis catch fire. And, many manufacturers build better cars for cheaper, and with less dangerous parts when a crash does occur. What will the government do to make my Lamborghinis cheaper for mass appeal? You can see that just by changing "Electric Vehicle" to something a little more taboo, that what you said now makes no sense.
Secondly, and something that should be blatantly obvious to any good citizen, is that you cannot solve business problems by throwing more money at it. Bad investment? Would doubling up your investment solve that? Absolutely not. So, when you say that government "policy" somehow makes EVs cheaper is a net positive to society, we both know this is a lie. The government can print money to try to solve problems, but doing so will inevitably incur serious penalties to the economy. Thats what good economists call an immeasurably unsustainable problem.
Lastly, and I think most importantly, most people understand that EVs are not staying for long. Let's look at the long list of lies they told us about EVs:
    -reliable (nope)
-economical (sacrificing your range signficiantly; nope)
-good for the environment (li-ion mining; nope)
    -cheap (nope)
    -good financing plans (nope)
    -good warranty (hyundai fiasco; nopee)
-well built (right to repair fiasco & burning teslas; nopee)
-fast (kinda? say goodbye to your tires)
So, the incentives to purchase one EV is very small. Miniscule. Virtue Signallingly small.
Thanks for reading my rant there Ed, have a good evening.

they've gone to silly, they're too big, to fast, and they're far to expensive, but also to energy ineffecient.
that combined with unpredictible battery wear that varies from the way it's charged. makes them really hard to sell on the used market once the lease period on such things is over.

I would look up if you can set up a user profile where some of the nannies are off or backed off, some cars let you do that.
I've talked with some friends about ev's and new cars in general, and what we came out of it with was that a lot of new cars are comfortable, and have a lot of nice features, but the basic task of getting in and just driving, is more complicated than before, tesla''s have pincodes, phone apps to open and start the cars, user modes that you might need to set each time etc
and then you get to a 94 whatever and you just got in, put the seatbelt on and turned the key.
The BMW i3 is much better at this than for example a tesla or a fisker ocean, you just get in, turn it on and put it in drive, for the most part very hassle free.

It sounds like your issue isn't as much with the electricness of the car, but the nags and beeps. Which I agree, some modern cars definitely have too much technology shoe horned into them, especially from what the driver needs to do to operate it safely. But, overall as a car to get from point a to point b it doesn't sound like you really have much objection to it. Your pain point about "doing this twice means I've used up 15 miles of battery" honestly isn't any different than doing that same thing twice in a gas powered v10/v12 as that'll use 15 miles of gas. I think if you keep looking around at EVs and find one that doesn't nag at you as often, I think it's something you could enjoy. Because the novelty of the sudden burst of acceleration cannot be hidden by your grumbling when after you do it and immediately smile near the end of the video. :)
