It’s interesting that you should bring up Grimm’s fairytales. I remember, about 20 years ago, going to a musical show here in London by the Tiger Lillies based on the 1845 German book ‘Der Struwewelpeter’ (‘Shock-Headed Peter’) by Heinrich Hoffman. One of the tales is about a little girl who sets herself on fire whilst playing with matches. I don’t know this for sure, but I have always thought that the story may have been the inspiration for ‘Hilf Mir’.

Der Struwwelpeter ("shock-headed Peter" or "Shaggy Peter") is an 1845 German children's book by Heinrich Hoffmann. It comprises ten illustrated and rhymed stories, mostly about children. Each has a clear moral that demonstrates the disastrous consequences of misbehavior in an exaggerated way
This story is part of these stories, now commonly known as the Struwwelpeter stories, and is called Die gar traurige Geschichte mit dem Feuerzeug ("The Very Sad Tale with the Matches"). It is the story of a little girl called Paulinchen (little Pauline) who discovers her parents matches, sets herself on fire and dies, with her 2 cats acting as moral compasses warning her before and mourning her after.
It was published in Lustige Geschichten und drollige Bilder mit 15 schön kolorierten Tafeln für Kinder von 3-6 Jahren ("funny stories and droll pictures with 15 beautifully coloured panels for children of 3-6 years"). The book was one of the first uses of chromolithography (a method of making multi-colored prints) in a children's book.

The poem was the inspiration. The song quotes a few phrases verbatim.

You are absolutely right. It is in parts from the book: Der Struwwelpeter. The story is called: The really sad story with the lighter

I am going to be hunting down the performance by the Tiger Lillies. Sounds really interesting. Also going to read the story.

Till could certainly taken inspiration for Hilf Mir from Die gar traurige Geschichte mit dem Feuerzeug ( The very sad tale with the matches) from Struwwelpeter where a little girl burns to death through playing with matches and only her cats mourn her. Rammstein don't say away from the darker side of life and refuse to do so despite criticism. There's an honesty to the lyrics and the music that deserves recognition. People may not like to have societal problems and politics brought into music but music is art and art reflects the world in which we live.

It is a really haunting tale. The sort of thing that makes it a real modern fairy tale. The music just intensifies the darkness and foreboding. This album has some amazing tracks on it.

It does, I agree, and yet it routinely polls as the least favourite album amongst fans. Ok, one of them has to be at the bottom of the list but some are quite disparaging about Rosenrot which is a shame because there are some excellent tracks on it.

My mind shies away from thinking about the not literal interpretations of the song. It's sounds like a hopeless cry for help. Mental illness? Drugs? Self-destructive behaviours brought on by loneliness?

    • @PopCultureProductions

I hadn't picked that out. I was leaning more into the tale that warns us that what we want isn't always good for us and ignoring danger signs can lead to very bad consequences. Possibly that isn't to far away from some peoples experience with some mental illnesses.
Yet again though this just illustrates the power of some of the songs Rammstein produce. Fool of depth that you can burrow down into more and more on each subsequent listen.
