Nah . . . after being told about the offences (idling / on the phone / etc) he totally ignored all that - wasn't interested - and quickly changed the subject to whether PttP was allowed to be in the car park or not . . . and again a little later when PttP once again brought the conversation back to reporting the officer in the car for the offences the sergeant once again quickly switched the conversation back to where PttP was allowed to stand . . . to the point of being pedantic . . . attempting to get PttP to move 1 or 2 metres to a new position, really petty stuff, he might have been polite, well spoken and even friendly . . . but he was still needlessly petty and doing his very best to obfuscate the actual issue (the original officer in the car who was committing offences) . . . . which I think the sergeant did a pretty good job at as PttP was twice sidelined into talking about a secondary non-issue - it was classic psychological distraction, the issue was the wrong doing of a police officer - and the sergeant changed the conversation into the wrong doing of PttP, after which PttP put all his energies into defending / explaining why the sergeant was wrong (about trespass / etc).

The sergeant was very professional and was smart enough to know that a camera is not a dangerous weapon, and as he knew he would end up on RUclips treated the whole thing with good grace and humour. However, my problem lies with the officers that approach with the attitude that you're in the wrong right from the outset, they are always aggressive and arrogantly talk down to you, and when I say you, I mean to all of us, they just haven't got the ability to just be nice, always that look in their faces that all they want to say to you is "you're nicked". The police must now be hated more than estate agents.

    • @UKImmigrationLawGeek

The Sergeant was excellent. He really took the time to listen. I think that it makes such a substantial difference when an Officer takes the time to properly introduce him or herself. I think that the Sergeant excelled in his ability to listen. He wasn't just giving stock phrases. The ability to communicate is obviously such a vital skill. For example, the Sergeant took the time to summarise what issues the auditor raised.

They teach them to never stand together when talking to the public, "spread out and surround the person". They teach them when in groups to repeat each others questions even though they keep getting the same answers, (" sign of madness" springs to mind). Keep talking until back-up arrives is another important tactic but I'm not sure about the pouting and shrugging when they lose an argument. Maybe that's on the new syllabus!

I personally prefer it when auditors are calm and professional. I really don't like it when auditors call Police Officers names. For example, if someone watches an auditing video and he or she sees an auditor being rude to an Officer, then the person might conclude that this is what auditing is like. I started watching auditing videos because I like to see if Police Officers know the laws they are enforcing and also if they exceed their powers ie in relation to a Stop and Search, for example.
