I've said this before, it's my personal theory that GMod is secretly the sequel to Half-Life where Gordon accidently managed to rip a hole in the fabric of reality which caused every other media universe to spill into the HL universe, which is why you can spawn pretty much anyone or anything.
Definitely the latter. If you see something horrifying. You're more likely to know what to do. (Usually run if possible) But the tension of thinking something is watching you is so much worse. Cause your own mind works against you in every possible way. You make it far worse than it ever could be on its own.
Same I feel the complete opposite of creeped out. Empty gmod maps are calming compared to hopping on a darkrp server and getting constantly micspammed.
I remember being on the construct map (idk what it's called, the internet was unhelpful but it's the one with the lake thing and the odd reddish building that's super dark inside and a big expanse of grass) and I remember going into the building as a kid and trying to make my way through the maze of doors and darkness. I just left because I couldn't shake the feeling something was following me. Freaked me out more than anything else I can remember.
The worst thing I believe is the atmosphere, I love it but when you play allow and hear the cars driving or people walking or talking it jus weird hear that because no one is there... or is there someone with you but you don’t know that?
When you spawn father gregori alyx Vance or any npc with a gun you will feel like you've got company but when you're alone you get the feeling that something is watching you
0:29 Well, the scary thing about that is the paradox between what you hear and what you can see. This is an empty town with no life and no movement in sight, it's just you. While the background sound and the many huge seemingly intact houses tell you the opposite, that there is actually a lot going on. It creates a feeling of loneliness, in a place where it shouldn't be like that in the first place, and this is where the scare factor comes from, along with the sound itself, as you already explained.

The odd thing is I only had this feeling as I got older, when I was young I put thousands of hours into this games singleplayer and never had that feeling.
The same applies to Minecraft I spawn in a world as a kid and I have so much fun But now I feel like something is watching me which is even scarier when you have scopophobia - the fear of being watched
Downloaded GMod a few weeks ago and I haven't gotten creeped out at all. Probably because I've played so many horror games it doesn't affect me anymore. 😂
i actually managed to overcome the fear by not watching horror related stuff wile or just before playing and honestly when you mess around more or get concentrated in what your doing then its also gone!
When im alone on a server, i use it as an opportunity to do the things I'm not allowed to do when I'm on. I would explore the whole map and find new places.
I remember playing it at my friends house when i was 8, I remember it being soo unsettling. Havent played Gmod since then yet I still sometimes have weird dreams being on a green field alone that reminds me of the Gmod lot.
whenever i play on singleplayer, i always play on flatgrass, so i can see anything. i dont like playing on maps like big city or darkrp when im alone. the idea of having limited vision and a sense of being alone but not alone at the same time gives me the chills.
Its a combination of being alone and the pang of nostalgia that becomes more bittersweet the older you get. I remember first playing it when I started high school, that was 15 years ago. The creepiest part for me is having thoughts of how much time has gone by, how much time I've wasted, friends I no longer talk to who I used to play Gmod with and a bunch of other feelings. I suppose it feeds into the fact that Gmod at its core, including classic maps, haven't changed after all this time but so much has changed in my own life. It's scary to me for those reasons.
Everytime I wanted to create a gmod video/sfm or whatever, I always pause midway, cause I feel this sudden feeling of uncomfort, like something anomaly is watching me, like im not truly alone, even though im in a single player world... The things you describe and show in this video definately hits home.
Same man that feeling all ways gave me the creeps I recreated the living the gm_construct but with an ragdoll I saw an black dot in the distance I got scared and it was never meant to be there but turns out it’s actually an blood splatter
honestly the creepiest thing that happened to me on gmod is i was doing an npc war where poison zombies were coming out of the dark room attacking rebels, i was on top of the building attacking from above when the zombies prepared to throw. i was like “oh they cant get me” but then i get attacked by a poison headcrab that flew up to me
I always had this lingering fear that someone, or something, would just come from behind me and kill me. Most times I played a random yt video in the background or spawned a bunch of random nps just to make that paranoia disappear for a while
well remember one thing if you do see something scary spawn as many op npcs at once turn on god mode and use the strongest gun you have in the game now your safe from gmod scary figures
the sentence at 3:34 was so true, like even if I am on a server with no people I still feel like I am not alone and everything I do someone is watching. in all source games.
I’ve played this game since I was seven back when venturiantale and others were at their peak, I would always get so scared playing alone. Love this vid!!!
It's called an liminal space, when something that once had a purpose and was designed by people is abandoned. This is cuz our brain is already used to locations like these to have ppl, and is confused. It's like a school before any students arrive, of an empty ikea, or a garry's mod map, or an flat minecraft world.
Weird, I never felt that way when I played gmod as a kid. Though I did get the same feeling of some unknown thing watching me, I got excited and tried searching for them.. Lol I was lonely
This creepy feeling is called a ‘limimal feeling’. It’s the off putting feeling of expecting a space to be filled with other beings but that space is empty. It’s like the really off feeling you get when you’re at school at night, or from abandoned places.
i think that the reason it feels creepy is because there’s this big area that’s normally full of people and it’s just empty. It’s like going to an empty school
I've always found Gmod maps alone so relaxing, some people think its scary I think its just so relaxing, there always used to be people everywhere in them talking, living, etc, and without it, it almost feels better. Even though in the maps its all controlled chaos and I also feel the same way when there is no one in it, it reminds me of controlled chaos knowing people used to thrive there and still do. I also don't feel lonely at all, I almost feel like everyone is still there even though there not, remembering all of the friends I've made over the years on a map, going to the places where we use to base and buy just a bunch of money printers, it all makes me so happy being able to remember that. Feeling content while alone in a darkrp maps is the most odd feeling but it never feels scary, I guess being alone has never really scared me before.
It's the concept of Liminal Spaces. Being alone in an area where it feels like something should be there or feels familiar. Playing with friends changes the mood a lot, but being alone sometimes makes you feel like you aren't alone
Always games like this when they have city ambience in a empty city, I always feel as if there is something behind me and the game will turn into a horror game

Yeah
I've said this before, it's my personal theory that GMod is secretly the sequel to Half-Life where Gordon accidently managed to rip a hole in the fabric of reality which caused every other media universe to spill into the HL universe, which is why you can spawn pretty much anyone or anything.
Could we do the same?
@@PETRIXXXX maybe :)

@@Prak_Giggles Respect this guy he clicked the link to prevent us from being rick rolled
Definitely the latter. If you see something horrifying. You're more likely to know what to do. (Usually run if possible) But the tension of thinking something is watching you is so much worse. Cause your own mind works against you in every possible way. You make it far worse than it ever could be on its own.
Thus why I quit gmod
Weird I always have a relaxed feeling when playing empty garry's mod maps
its all about the mindset,if you think theres something bad in a dark room you will be scared, but you could also be relaxed because its dark and calm
Same I feel the complete opposite of creeped out. Empty gmod maps are calming compared to hopping on a darkrp server and getting constantly micspammed.
You are to strong
Nice to meet someone else who thinks the same. Spent close to 14 years playing Gmod, I love being alone.
Same
i just think of it as and extension of my room
I remember being on the construct map (idk what it's called, the internet was unhelpful but it's the one with the lake thing and the odd reddish building that's super dark inside and a big expanse of grass) and I remember going into the building as a kid and trying to make my way through the maze of doors and darkness. I just left because I couldn't shake the feeling something was following me. Freaked me out more than anything else I can remember.
The worst thing I believe is the atmosphere, I love it but when you play allow and hear the cars driving or people walking or talking it jus weird hear that because no one is there... or is there someone with you but you don’t know that?
Agreed. Valve really knew what they wanted when they made Source engine, and that atmosphere / mood definitely carried over to Garrys Mod as well.

The creepiness is not in the loneliness in the game u have the feeling that there is someone with u.

maybe its cause when you're younger you're not really aware of whats gonna happen, you're just having fun

Each time I play in solo mode, I can't help but spawn an op weapon thinking a bad NPC will spawn without me doing anything
whenever i play on singleplayer, i always play on flatgrass, so i can see anything. i dont like playing on maps like big city or darkrp when im alone. the idea of having limited vision and a sense of being alone but not alone at the same time gives me the chills.
its just as worse when you see something in the open that isnt supposed to be there
@Anonymous 2918 but what if its an human npc but floating in the sky and when you go close to this your game will turn off
@Anonymous 2918 but can they fly on will and follow you even when you kill them?
Its a combination of being alone and the pang of nostalgia that becomes more bittersweet the older you get. I remember first playing it when I started high school, that was 15 years ago. The creepiest part for me is having thoughts of how much time has gone by, how much time I've wasted, friends I no longer talk to who I used to play Gmod with and a bunch of other feelings. I suppose it feeds into the fact that Gmod at its core, including classic maps, haven't changed after all this time but so much has changed in my own life. It's scary to me for those reasons.
gmod is pretty chill but the ambience of some maps alone is minecraft cave noises levels of sus

Gmod is basically an unintended psychological horror game
Same man that feeling all ways gave me the creeps I recreated the living the gm_construct but with an ragdoll I saw an black dot in the distance I got scared and it was never meant to be there but turns out it’s actually an blood splatter

It's called an liminal space, when something that once had a purpose and was designed by people is abandoned. This is cuz our brain is already used to locations like these to have ppl, and is confused. This creepy feeling is called a ‘limimal feeling’. It’s the off putting feeling of expecting a space to be filled with other beings but that space is empty. It’s like the really off feeling you get when you’re at school at night, or from abandoned places.

This is also why it's especially terrifying when you spawn a weeping angel in any of the maps.

Tip: try to imagine that that "thing" that you feel watching you is actually benevolent and it simply making sure you are ok
Playing with friends changes the mood a lot, but being alone sometimes makes you feel like you aren't alone
they make the atmosphere peacefull, too peacefull.
Always games like this when they have city ambience in a empty city, I always feel as if there is something behind me and the game will turn into a horror game
