I think what makes Gmod so special is that it's basically 'Source engine jank, the videogame' yet Garry (and Facepunch) managed to wrangle the source engine spaghetti monster code, make a fun and functioning game, and basically have a moddb's worth of user content built right in steam (these days at least).
I think a big part of it too was being able to bring all your favourite source games into one spot. Messing with HL2 NPCs while running around with CS:S weapons on a TF2 map, playing as a L4D character
It’s also a self sustaining system. The reason games like S&Box won’t ever surpass Gmod is because Gmod has had way more time to develop on its own with the guidance of its community. There’s nearly infinite content on the Workshop, so how can a bunch of shitty bean people with mediocre physics ever compete?

heres some info on mod&play: I was there when the game was in development and got released and everything. So first of all, it only got released when it did because he did a vote in the discord and people voted to release it now (he then uses this later to blame for the games failure because it wasn't ready to be released). It was actually really cool, the developer had some decent modding tools for the game up on his github. He interacted with the community, he promised a lot of great features and the updates were actually adding a lot of fun content to the game. There were many servers to play on and it kinda reminded me of playing the early days of gmod. Then this is where it started to go down hill. As any game with modding goes, the workshop had some furry playermodels and things like that. Turns out the developer not only had a distaste for furries, he fucking HATED furries. He started going crazy in the discord about the furry mods being made, started saying his community was horrible, and then started banning anyone from the discord if they made a furry mod or supported furries, or even went against anything he said. Before you know it, he bans EVERYONE from the discord for absolutely no reason, takes down his modding tools and basically never touches the game again. He then started advertising his new sandbox game too before people shut him down. So basically he made a cool game that had potential, and then literally killed it himself. Another bit to the story: thats where Modiverse development started and the developer for that started advertising it in the reviews for mod&play (at the time it was called "KJmod"). Also have a whole story for modiverse but thats not really too worth getting into

I hope a proper Gmod "succesor" comes one day. The popularity of GTAORP, VRchat and ROBLOX, and even the corporate push for the metaverse, proves that there is an untapped market for an workshop-oriented online game like GMod but with a lot more power and flexibility.
And don’t forget how much replayability and lengevity the workshop gives to games like Portal and Left 4 Dead, user generated content can easily keep a game popular and thriving for decades. Even rhythm games like Osu and Etterna are only popular because of user-made content and how accessible it is to make it. The problem is, that by allowing endless user generated content for everyone, it becomes impossible to monetize anything, cause people will just release it for free. So the only way to wrang players for money is to restrict what they can upload, which would ruin the workshop side of things.
I think teardown is the closest thing to Garry's mod that isn't just a cheap knock off of it. Aside from the spawnmenu, the only real gmod style stuff is in the workshop, which also contains humans and ragdolls but it has a very similar feel to it.

I think gmod hasn't been properly cloned because its more a metatext then an isolated game - it relies on all the other valve games, culturally and functionally, so unless another developer makes multiple universally loved games on an open source engine, I think the "essence" of gmod can't be copied

I think at some point when you put enough effort into copying gmod, anything you thought of to change it to avoid copyright just becomes easier and more fun to make into an add-on for gmod than into an actual game, which is why it's never copied. Also, gmod's physics, weapons, props, NPCs, and everything else is actually so much to copy if you're putting in low effort that it's not worth it. Seriously, you try animating the reloading, shooting, slide-pulling, recoil, weapon switching, running, walking, looking, moving, and inspecting animations for like 10 weapons, plus designing models and NPC animations. Gmod had a lot of effort put into it.
i remember playing this old mobile Garry's Mod ripoff called Tiber's Box. And i played it a lot when i was like 6 or 9 years old, but now it seems to be gone from the Google Play Store.

You forgot one gmod copy. But it got deleted i think. It was called "Monogon echoes." I have it in my library but can't play it. It had the same playermodel as the guy in walking simulator/mod and play. Maybe you should check it out. If it's possible
You probably don't play Roblox enough but anything you see wrong with Roblox in Ray's Mod is typically not there. Its all about the effort the developers put in. Ray's Mod mostly reuses code from the UGC in the Toolbox. The only reason its thriving is because the developer found a way to make money off of it. By making any bonus content cost Robux.
Cave Johnson here. I saw this comment and began to think; "Hey, why don't we doppël this up in the marketing wing?" So I went and asked around for any 'Roblox Specialists'. I figured out that there AREN'T any Roblox gamers in our entire facility. Something about them being "adults" and "not having enough time to play kids games" so I began firing anyone who didn't have a copy of Roblox in their PC within three days with a two-week notice. Funding is looking good, so I don't see a problem with this. Cave Johnson, we're done here.

I actually know a ripoff of gmod you can play on your phone. It’s called BloodBox, and if you turn on airplane mode to get rid of the ads, it can be pretty fun.
I think the main thing that will always limit a Gmod clone is the amount of community content and basic engine functions like working NPC AI and good base weapons. It's just hard to build up the base that Gmod got to start with and to convince others to create addons within it. It's unfortunate but hopefully we can see a Gmod-like game come about in the future that is built on an engine that isn't shackled to as much inherited jank as the Source engine.

i think we can say that gmod's base, half life 2, was really helpful for making gmod. and janky source engine made people laugh and brought more people. they still used assets from half life and everything, so while it isnt 100% half life copy, i just wanna say that it helped gmod development.
Because ROBLOX runs on LUA, it’s very easy to port over source-like games. One of the earlier popular games on ROBLOX was Stop it, slender! based on the Gmod gamemode of the same name. There is also a ROBLOX dev called ROLVE (wow, subtle) that basically just ports over souce games, the most popular ones being CS:RO (CSGO clone) and Typical Colors (TF2 clone) They’re actually REALLY well made and worth checking out.
Mod&Play seems to use the omni hazmat projector model from Boneworks and Bonelab without the robot stuff. I can tell this game was 100% made without any effort or little details. ( I AM NOT 100% SURE IF IT WAS STOLEN)

You forgot one gmod copy. But it got deleted i think. It was called "Monogon echoes." I have it in my library but can't play it. It had the same playermodel as the guy in walking simulator/mod and play. Maybe you should check it out. If it's possible

You probably don't play Roblox enough but anything you see wrong with Roblox in Ray's Mod is typically not there. Its all about the effort the developers put in. Ray's Mod mostly reuses code from the UGC in the Toolbox. The only reason its thriving is because the developer found a way to make money off of it. By making any bonus content cost Robux.
Cave Johnson here. I saw this comment and began to think; "Hey, why don't we doppël this up in the marketing wing?" So I went and asked around for any 'Roblox Specialists'. I figured out that there AREN'T any Roblox gamers in our entire facility. Something about them being "adults" and "not having enough time to play kids games" so I began firing anyone who didn't have a copy of Roblox in their PC within three days with a two-week notice. Funding is looking good, so I don't see a problem with this. Cave Johnson, we're done here.

A pretty decent Garry's mod "clone" on Roblox is The Cool Zone. It's pretty fun to mess around with, especially in a private server with friends.

You know why there is a ton of gmod ripoffs because while in gmod development they accidentally made the codes things and stuffs open source which people can copy and paste with 0 iq level of experience
Ray's mod is AMAZING and deserves so much respect. We all know actual garry's mod players say its simply a copy of the game but only roblox developers know how scripting such game on roblox is hard af.

I think the main thing that will always limit a Gmod clone is the amount of community content and basic engine functions like working NPC AI and good base weapons. It's just hard to build up the base that Gmod got to start with and to convince others to create addons within it. It's unfortunate but hopefully we can see a Gmod-like game come about in the future that is built on an engine that isn't shackled to as much inherited jank as the Source engine.
Chastising these games for being asset flips is hardly fair considering garrys mod is the biggest asset flip there is
Source mods are the gaming equivalent of white bread and gmod basically adds no new original content all it does is give you tools to mess around with props

As for the topic of today’s video made by the legendary thrower of nibbling small creatures, it was absolutely disappointing to see. These imitators come packaged with a grimy slime-feeling and the smell of a half-assed job. Not very swag. Besides, why would I want to play any of these when I got Garry’s Mod right here? All of this wasted effort, if any was invested at all, went to a broken cause.

i think we can say that gmod's base, half life 2, was really helpful for making gmod. and janky source engine made people laugh and brought more people.
they still used assets from half life and everything, so while it isnt 100% half life copy, i just wanna say that it helped gmod development.

Because ROBLOX runs on LUA, it’s very easy to port over source-like games. One of the earlier popular games on ROBLOX was Stop it, slender! based on the Gmod gamemode of the same name. There is also a ROBLOX dev called ROLVE (wow, subtle) that basically just ports over souce games, the most popular ones being CS:RO (CSGO clone) and Typical Colors (TF2 clone) They’re actually REALLY well made and worth checking out.
Mod&Play seems to use the omni hazmat projector model from Boneworks and Bonelab without the robot stuff. I can tell this game was 100% made without any effort or little details. ( I AM NOT 100% SURE IF IT WAS STOLEN)
