Hey RatLobber, just wanted to clear something up. Captain Corrigan was not the addon creator, that was my display name for the longest time. Before the original creator's steam account was terminated, he changed his custom url to "f*ckf*ckyouyou", which I changed my custom URL to for comedic reasons shortly after seeing it was up for grabs. The GMod fandom page wrongly credits me to this, even though I was not at all responsible, and it was a simple misunderstanding. TL;DR, I did a bit of chicanery. A tad of tomfoolery, a miniscule amount of trolling, and a heart helping of Harlequinade.
This technically wasn't the biggest hack in Gmod history. There was the old Gbombs massacre where the creator of Gbombs was able to backdoor any server that used his mod, which doesn't seem too bad until you realize that this allowed them to gain RCON access and therefore actually caused financial damages to servers by allowing the creator to basically destroy server economies and whatnot. Not to mention the fact that some servers (I don't know if they still do) actually use a screengrabber tool for their servers which would be totally okay if it was isolated, but it was also effectively a keylogger too, which could definitely bring up privacy concerns.
@@yodasber54 I remember back in 2014 or 2015 there were Reuploads of M9K's Weapon SWEPs and I was on a Sandbox server with one of these addons. Immediately as the dev joined, this 40 player lobby would be auto-killed over and over while earrape bass boosted music would blast through the dev's mic. The admins were literal children so this went on for 20 minutes before they just resorted to banning everyone in the server.
I got hit by this too, scared the daylight out of me. I was in a call with a friend who I think was about to hop on himself till I started screaming "OH GOD, WTF, WTF WHY, HOW" confusing and terrifying him.

You're forgetting that some addons didn't just display Goatse but also delete your data folder. Dismissing the copycat attacks in this video I think is a bit iffy since some were even worse than the original. Also some addons were caught distributing REAL malware such as miners.

There was a server some time in 2012-2014 that would close my game and spam open images of disgusting old people porn, gore, and of the like. A simple restart of the PC fixed it, but I tried to join the server 3 times before giving up. This is definitely not the "First" time something like this has happened.

The thing with malicious code, especially with GMod---it'd be hard to do something damaging to the actual computer as it's all locally run with Lua in the engine. Other popular workshops like Black Mesa or TF2, have only maps/models/sounds, so malicious code can't be run there either. I feel like it would be difficult to have something that could actually harm the user's computer on the workshop.
Pretty sure it can open a web from your internet and download more things... I mean there is a gamemode (Jazztronauts) that auto downloads "random" gmod maps and your goal is to steal props/items.
Indeed. Lua itself can't really hurt your game by itself but it can force your system to open websites with virus and a bunch more of stuff. It happened a few times during GMod era.
The source engine in general its very airtight in regard of what it can do outside of the game. BUT it can certainly force your computer to open a malicious website if it so wanted.
I think they should add a manual update option for the workshop, honestly i’m kinda baffled at the fact that they made a service that autoupdates mods with little to no moderation, I’m surprised this hasn’t happened more often

The one virus I remember going around in Gmod was the Cough Virus, where everyone in the game you were in started typing cough with no end At the time, young me was scared shitless lol

This particular case of virus in GMod addons is not the most potentially malicious one. In 2019-2020 I noticed some popular horror maps being reuploaded and renamed by one user. I opened .gma files of these addons and noticed some weird script in 'autorun' folder (this folder contains scripts that work upon loading into the map). This script was quite weird, but looked too short to do anything. But then I noticed that the text editor showed a presence of over 12000 hidden symbols. Considering that the person who reuploaded these addons closed off comments, I decided to contact Rubat (one of GMod's developers) and reported these addons. Shortly after these addons were removed. It's still unclear what this script really did, so I had to dig into some hacker forums to find out. It appeared that the code was concealed in some sophisticated way, and there was no way of decoding it. Names of some of these addons were: gm_deadzone_(horror_map), gm_hideout_(horror_map), gm_hideout_part_2_(horror_map). There were more of these, but since then I saved .gma files of only those addons in particular.

Probably just hiding the code with lots of tabs or spaces. If you're on visual studio code you can turn on word wrap by going to View > Word Wrap. More likely than not the code just fetches from, posts to, or opens some url

I think I got a much more tamer version of this. I went into an arcade map I had installed, and I was greeted with a red square with a small texbox with the word “ERROR” in the middle of the square with a high-pitched noise

I still don't know if the addon author was hijacked or if the author himself did this. If you read the descriptions of his addons the english wasn't broken, but if you read the rage comment in the infected lua files, it's full of grammatical errors. I have doubts the original author did this himself, though it is suspicious that some have tried to contact him directly to no response.
I still think that they hacked him for a few reasons, tf2 RUclipsrs are targeted by a hackers and the instructions on steam are full of bots especially in (team fortress 2 ,haflife and garismod)
The reason the workshop is still around is not because "it was made so long ago" valve as a company all of there most successful titles are all mods. They have deep seeded beliefs that modding community's breed innovation, talent and ideas. It's a no brainer for them to give them the support and freedom and streamline it through steam than needing to use 3rd party sites.

I remember this whole Gmod addon incident when I was reading through the Steam forums. Never fully paid attention because I barely play Gmod and I have a few addons to play with but never realized how damaging this thing was. Over the years, Valve has put a lot of work to moderate the workshop to which the initial reason was to stop scam links from the CSGO workshop and to prevent malicious files from Gmod workshop and other games alike.

I just got Gmod installed yesterday and as to begin with, with no knowledge from before and any experience about how it works, downloaded a few add-ons like cars, some characters and a map. When I got into the map that I had just downloaded, which was a lab, I load the game and there goes my first experience! Everything's working smoothly... until it didn't. saw a distorted low polygon figure, kinda like a naked female running to me in high speed suddenly and a nasty video on repeat with the same scream sound as the scream that is in the video at 5:59, started to ruin my first ever experience. Luckily, with a help of an experienced friend, I managed to get rid of them... them all; cause I had no idea which of those add-ons were the malicious virus.
That sucks. Luckily I never had to deal with anything besides the normal constant errors and unstable performance. Geuss I'm lucky, I have a fuckton of mods.

feel this is a good lesson in why you shouldnt harass mod devs who are just trying to make fun content for the community. it is both shitty behavior in general, and a gateway to this sort of response.

To anyone watching this video with concerns on their computers "safety and security" from the Garry's Mod Workshop, let me give you some relief. This was NOT a virus, and didn't actually breach any security... The original script that was the Glue Library addon was updated, but instead of an improvement or a fix, is was replaced with a troll script. The troll addon can only run within the game, and although it might be offensive and obscene for them to show you graphic images, it was simply an in-game HTML overlay linked to a photo.
Incident 2 incident date: june 2023 designation: Abaddon incident report: BLACKWATCH addon has gone rogue and enables a "screamer" from launch, Others have followed suit with BLACKWATCH and more are out there, Men have been sent in to search for remaining infected addons. Status: Currently unresolved
For moderation they could make it so that if an add on reaches ‘x’ number of downloads, then a moderator would be tasked with checking it. But even then, it won’t be a perfect system. Great video regardless.
Does anyone remember the (co-)creator of the DarkRP gamemode called 'FPtje'? I used to be a DarkRP admin on a community server. One afternoon a guy promptly named 'FPtje' joined the game and started propsurfing like I had never seen any player do before - By flinging a prop under his feet and using this to scoot across the map. It was obvious we tried to kick him for doing this, as was normal procedure. But... We couldn't. It just showed up as an error in the console. It would seem obvious he had given himself a higher rank than 'superadmin' when he coded the gamemode and thus could not be banned or kicked, as he explained later on when we asked him what the deal was. He could also type out every players current bank salary, playername and steamID in chat within seconds. This was a very strange and rare occurrence for us, since we never encountered such a player that could run these sort of scripts I mentioned above.
oh yea! i was actually a part of this one! i remember that i was trying to figure out wtf just happened. i diddnt have many mods at the time, so i figured out that it was an ambient occlusion mod that had it, and wiped the file off my computer.

Honestly,harassing mod creators in general leads to bad things happening,especially in a game that's pretty much mod-dependant I have like 20 lua errors everytime i play and it's pretty easy to ignore them,i don't know why would they be mad over a single mod just making people's addons break ,you could always uninstall it and wait for it to be updated,rather than pushing someone constantly

I downloaded gmod on December 11, 2021. I was lucky enough to not have come across this virus somehow, despite how recent it was back then. I didn’t even know about it until two months after.
Instead of automatically updating addons, steam workshop should ask the player to accept the update and provide a change log written by the dev of the addon himself so this stuff wouldnt affect more players.

A similar thing happened with the Harmony library for Cities Skylines, except the author was convinced the official plugin contained malware in it - so they made their own plugin (which was pretty well made); until they decided to start screwing with people who had a certain steam ID. It would mess with your game and cause errors, just because you dared to criticize the author. Really goes to show you should take good care of your mental health.. What sucked about it was the developer made some pretty decent addons, but their paranoia led them down a rabbit hole that ended up with them getting completely banned and their mods removed. Absolutely crazy stuff!
Very tactical usage of time. I can't even be mad, use a picture of Gman as the thumbnail, then wait 5 minutes and including a sponsor segment to get to something the whole Gmod community heard about in the summerof last year. That right there is manipulation of the RUclips algorithm and I am impressed.

I think they should add a manual update option for the workshop, honestly i’m kinda baffled at the fact that they made a service that autoupdates mods with little to no moderation, I’m surprised this hasn’t happened more often

This particular case of virus in GMod addons is not the most potentially malicious one.
In 2019-2020 I noticed some popular horror maps being reuploaded and renamed by one user. I opened .gma files of these addons and noticed some weird script in 'autorun' folder (this folder contains scripts that work upon loading into the map). This script was quite weird, but looked too short to do anything. But then I noticed that the text editor showed a presence of over 12000 hidden symbols.
Considering that the person who reuploaded these addons closed off comments, I decided to contact Rubat (one of GMod's developers) and reported these addons. Shortly after these addons were removed. It's still unclear what this script really did, so I had to dig into some hacker forums to find out. It appeared that the code was concealed in some sophisticated way, and there was no way of decoding it. Names of some of these addons were: gm_deadzone_(horror_map), gm_hideout_(horror_map), gm_hideout_part_2_(horror_map). There were more of these, but since then I saved .gma files of only those addons in particular.
Hey I know a bit and I've helped decode malicious code during the 2022 second wave of infected addons (Those that deleted the Data folder). Would you mind shooting those GMAs my way? Thanks.

Probably just hiding the code with lots of tabs or spaces. If you're on visual studio code you can turn on word wrap by going to View > Word Wrap. More likely than not the code just fetches from, posts to, or opens some url

I think I got a much more tamer version of this. I went into an arcade map I had installed, and I was greeted with a red square with a small texbox with the word “ERROR” in the middle of the square with a high-pitched noise
That might mean you’re missing a model or texture, some maps require assets from counter strike or portal or whatever

I still don't know if the addon author was hijacked or if the author himself did this. If you read the descriptions of his addons the english wasn't broken, but if you read the rage comment in the infected lua files, it's full of grammatical errors. I have doubts the original author did this himself, though it is suspicious that some have tried to contact him directly to no response.
I still think that they hacked him for a few reasons, tf2 RUclipsrs are targeted by a hackers and the instructions on steam are full of bots especially in (team fortress 2 ,haflife and garismod)

The reason the workshop is still around is not because "it was made so long ago" valve as a company all of there most successful titles are all mods. They have deep seeded beliefs that modding community's breed innovation, talent and ideas. It's a no brainer for them to give them the support and freedom and streamline it through steam than needing to use 3rd party sites.

I remember this whole Gmod addon incident when I was reading through the Steam forums. Never fully paid attention because I barely play Gmod and I have a few addons to play with but never realized how damaging this thing was.
Over the years, Valve has put a lot of work to moderate the workshop to which the initial reason was to stop scam links from the CSGO workshop and to prevent malicious files from Gmod workshop and other games alike.

I just got Gmod installed yesterday and as to begin with, with no knowledge from before and any experience about how it works, downloaded a few add-ons like cars, some characters and a map. When I got into the map that I had just downloaded, which was a lab, I load the game and there goes my first experience! Everything's working smoothly... until it didn't.
saw a distorted low polygon figure, kinda like a naked female running to me in high speed suddenly and a nasty video on repeat with the same scream sound as the scream that is in the video at 5:59, started to ruin my first ever experience.
Luckily, with a help of an experienced friend, I managed to get rid of them... them all; cause I had no idea which of those add-ons were the malicious virus.
That sucks. Luckily I never had to deal with anything besides the normal constant errors and unstable performance. Geuss I'm lucky, I have a fuckton of mods.
Always filter addons by their popularity and try to avoid 3 or lower stars.

To anyone watching this video with concerns on their computers "safety and security" from the Garry's Mod Workshop, let me give you some relief. This was NOT a virus, and didn't actually breach any security... The original script that was the Glue Library addon was updated, but instead of an improvement or a fix, is was replaced with a troll script. The troll addon can only run within the game, and although it might be offensive and obscene for them to show you graphic images, it was simply an in-game HTML overlay linked to a photo.

Does anyone remember the (co-)creator of the DarkRP gamemode called 'FPtje'?
I used to be a DarkRP admin on a community server.
One afternoon a guy promptly named 'FPtje' joined the game and started propsurfing like I had never seen any player do before - By flinging a prop under his feet and using this to scoot across the map.
It was obvious we tried to kick him for doing this, as was normal procedure. But... We couldn't. It just showed up as an error in the console.
It would seem obvious he had given himself a higher rank than 'superadmin' when he coded the gamemode and thus could not be banned or kicked, as he explained later on when we asked him what the deal was.
He could also type out every players current bank salary, playername and steamID in chat within seconds.
This was a very strange and rare occurrence for us, since we never encountered such a player that could run these sort of scripts I mentioned above.

I have like 20 lua errors everytime i play and it's pretty easy to ignore them,i don't know why would they be mad over a single mod just making people's addons break ,you could always uninstall it and wait for it to be updated,rather than pushing someone constantly

I downloaded gmod on December 11, 2021. I was lucky enough to not have come across this virus somehow, despite how recent it was back then. I didn’t even know about it until two months after.

Instead of automatically updating addons, steam workshop should ask the player to accept the update and provide a change log written by the dev of the addon himself so this stuff wouldnt affect more players.

So basically this is clickbait, and it's absolutely not a virus, and it's just a troll LUA script...
A similar thing happened with the Harmony library for Cities Skylines, except the author was convinced the official plugin contained malware in it - so they made their own plugin (which was pretty well made); until they decided to start screwing with people who had a certain steam ID. It would mess with your game and cause errors, just because you dared to criticize the author. Really goes to show you should take good care of your mental health..
What sucked about it was the developer made some pretty decent addons, but their paranoia led them down a rabbit hole that ended up with them getting completely banned and their mods removed. Absolutely crazy stuff!
