Driving Wheels is one of my all time favourite songs - I never ever get tired of hearing hit. Cold Chisel' song "Letter to Alan" was dedicated to a former member of the band's road crew, Alan Dallow, who died in a truck accident. Jimmy's touring in the next couple of months with his "Hell of a Time" show I'm heading back to see him at Tanunda and Adelaide (South Australia) and then will see the show in New Zealand (Christchurch, Wellington and Dunedin). And then in September I'm going to the Maldives to see Jimmy perform for the 5th time. Ian Moss will also be there. Jimmy and Mossy performed at Kandooma in the Maldives in 2022 and their gigs were off the planet. It was like being at a Chisel concert but the audience numbered just 250. The stage was on a beach on an island in the Indian Ocean. As the sun went down the music began ... the most incredible and memorable experience.

Legendary slide guitar player Ry Cooder played the guitar on the album, Johnny Diesel played it live. I saw it at Homebush in Sydney, later home of the Olympics and not far from where they filmed Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, which I watched being filmed on my lunch breaks on my first job!

The peak performance of this song (and most) was 10 years earlier on the 1988 Barnestorming tour in support of Freight Train Heart. He was in his early 30s and just freaky powerful and hit natural vibratos in his full belt that defy belief. This was when he was starting to age out in his 40s and lose some of his bite even though he still dialed it up as best he could.

Thanks for the great appreciation you show for these Aussie icons. For us amateurs that covered these songs in the pubs and clubs around Australia, the crowds would always expect us to try and recreate the intensity. While we could never really match Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham etc, it made us realize we needed to respect the audience and aspire to the work they put in to putting on a good show. I know it made me a better singer. 👃

Though a lot of the 80s and 90s Dave Amatao the lead guitarist from REO Speedwagon was his guitarist who Is In a lot of his live videos.
Also Journey's Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain(who actually produced Freight Train Heart) worked on the Album along with Huey Lewis so It was a bit of a star studded album.

It's a good idea to check the lyrics before watching a live performance of a song you don't know, when it comes to Jimmy. When he goes off, it can be very hard to get what he's singing sometimes. If you know the lyrics by heart, as we all do, it's just a rockin' good time. Great reaction , thank you. ❤

Barnes wrote this song to try and tap into the US market and get recognised there . Barnes thought because of INXS,s success , Cold Chisel would make it big there . But Americans didnt like Cold Chisels style or Barnes screeching vocals. Barnes came back and publicly said Americans have no taste in music and i will never go there again . The difference with INXS and Cold Chisel , is INXS worked damn hard and played a lot of colleges there and unlike Barnes , they knew their success wouldnt come overnight

I not seen this live one before but no way is Jimmy looking healthy there. He certainly done more than drinking at this point, Looks like self destruction mode of someone on some drugs. I am glad he found himself out of this time of his life without killing himself. Only other time seen him with blonde hair was Sydney Olympics around same era. So I see it as his serious addiction era. He was probably a maniac for Diesel and others out the back to deal with in this period. He looks amped up to the max on something. It very different energy to when he just drunk and very soulful style of years earlier with Cold Chisel where he was a wild man in his youth but not really out to do himself damage.
