This is the ultimate freedom song windows down drivin through the cane fields of North QLD… the smothering sweet smell of sugar… wind through your hair… screaming your lungs out!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
This song was originally written to be a ballad by Jonathan cain but Jimmy went Nah its a rock song. Its another unofficial national anthem of Australia. Jimmy has a heap of other songs which are anthems of Australia.
You hit the nail right on the head with the comparison to Springsteen! True story: I was in the U.S. Navy back in the mid-80's and we spent 10 days or so in Perth Western Australia. My buddy and I rented a car and cutting to the chase - we wound up in a record store. Our 'accents' (lol) gave us away as 'Yanks' and were soon chatting it up with lots of folks that were there at the time. We asked what band or artist album(s) we should get that are well known in Australia / an Australian talent. The store manager literally said what you did - "... so you guys know of your Bruce Springsteen yes?" We were like - "Yeah... " "You should check out this guy then, Jimmy Barnes and perhaps some of his older stuff from his previous band Cold Chisel - he's kind of like our version of Springsteen." We each purchased a couple of albums - I grabbed a Barnsey and a Chisel album. Been a fan ever since.
The song was actually written by Canadian Jonathan Cain, a member of the early80s band Journey,. Both him and fellow Journey member Neil Schon played in Jimmys band in the late 80s-early 90s. If you have head of country singer Reba Macentire, she does a lame basic carbon copy of the song after Jimmys version was largely ignored in the US. Its an Aussie anthem...play it anywhere in the world and somewhere an Aussie will scream out the words..
One of our own classic singer jimmy you can't beat cold chisel n then jimmy come,s out solo this is our hard rock hard core singing we r pretty fucking lucky to have him down under cheers
This is one of those songs that didn’t go #1, but lasted far longer than many of the songs ahead of it. Yes, you are so right, summertime, windows down, radio loud, Jimmy…
If you love this, you would love ‘Bow River’ by Cold Chisel….live, 2003. Jimmy Barnes is usually Cold Chisel’s singer, but he does share the honours with Ian Moss, who takes the lead in this song. It’s a total banger!
God, I've been rockin out to Jimmy Barnes since the late 70"s! I'm 66 now, so is Jimmy! But here I am very often listening still and watching people discover him for the first time! Unbelievable! He is a true legend❤️
Working Class Man spent 14 weeks in the Australian charts and peaking at # 5. Jimmy also wrote the books, Working Class Boy and Working Class Man, both became a number one bestsellers.
I’ve got 3 Jimmy books, hang in lol. I’m back lol - Killing Time, my friend bought them for me as gifts , oh yes and she bought me Jimmy’s alarm clock 😂. I never use alarm, I’ll use alarm if burglar ever tries to get in here 😂

Mate, between this and Stone Cold you’re getting a good taste of classic Jimmy Barnes across his many decades. But as I said before, you now got to check out his band Cold Chisel. Suggest Bow River - live version from the Ringside tour. You’ll see another vocalist there too- as well as Jimmy as the band had two male vocalists- Jimmy and Ian Moss. Jimmy was lead in most songs, Bow River you’ll see them both. For pure wild Jimmy in his prime see Wild Thing by Cold Chisel.
"WAS" nah still am lol I just finished a 5 hour drive up the Australian east coast going home. This came on and it's amazing where your thoughts take you. I was tapping away on my steering wheel whilst surrounded by the big rigs on the highway...the working class men pounding the tar to get their loads to wherever. Near home seeing farmers ploughing fields. Then a huge smile enveloped me as I watched a wife jump up and give her farmer/ husband a kiss up on his tractor in the mist of the early morning. Cows going in for milking and shops opening their doors. All this with the working class man in my thoughts and Jimmy pumping my eardrums in my car. Life as we know it here in Oz. This song will always be a reminder of those who are the backbone in every country. This is a song that will never age ! Loved it decades ago when released and still loving it !
FYI, Barnesy grew up in Adelaide, sister city to Austin, Tx. I visited in 1986, to commemorate our common sesquicentennial year. Never again. Once was enough. It was real simple to work out why Cold Chisel, already broken up, never went over in the U.S.
Jimmy is a legend.I am a truck driver and its sugar cane season here in queensland Australia atm so I love it when this song comes up on the radio cruising the highway but when Driving wheels [another jimmy barnes song]comes on it goes to another level.A true classic driving song, especially for us truckers
I was smiling with you all along; it brings me so much joy when people get to hear the music we grew up with for the first time especially Barnsey or Cold Chisel.

So glad you're tapping into our Aussie legends ! Jimmy Barnes is originally a rocker, years before going solo. The band he was in is Cold Chisel, a pub band. Check out, Cold Chisel, You've got nothing I want
We all grew up listening to this music & I`m glad you are discovering & enjoying it now. Georges comment below is a good one with Tina Turner & Jimmy 👍Also Jimmy Barnes & INXS `Good Times` is great too.

Weve been rocking our butts off to this for 30 years. Its so cool seeing you hear this for the first time. So many great Australian stuff for you to hear
This is what we would call (when I was young - I am about same age as Jimmy) Pub Rock - grew up with Jimmy - love him - my favorite singer. His band 'Cold Chisel' or Jimmy never really went the US scene - I know they met with US labels early but they more or less wanted to change who they were and image and all - but to them it was always being true to their music and themselves - They wrote and released a song ( a great song) after called 'You got nothin I want' - you should check it out
Used for the movie Working Class Man. Try when he was with the group Cold Chisel especially the song Khe Sanh. Bee Gees used to perform in Aussie pubs and clubs when they were kids. Fights would break out and then they'd applaud the kids. Barry and Mo said Aussies are the only people they've seen fight sitting down...moving the beer to the side before throwing a punch, of course.
Awesome choice to react to. I think I remember this song being the closing song in Michael Keaton's 1986 movie Gung Ho (Working Class Man in Oz) in the 80s about a Car Factory.
You got that right, in the late 80's I'd pick up my 2 best friends in the car (I was the only one with a provisional licence), we'd grab a pizza and 2L bottle of coke, put Cold Chisel in the cassette deck and just drive around our area, laughing... trivia about this video as well.... that is sugar cane being burned off... and apparently whilst they were filming.. all the snakes were coming out of the fields lmao...... they had to be careful x
Sung at many a BBQ here in Aus..lol travel well over all these years. In this clip they are farming Sugar cane. Our farmers are doing it tough first draught then fires now floods. But we breed then tough in The Land Down Under. Great reaction Texas
This song was released in 1985. The CD I had when I got my licence two years later was played everyday. I use to drive my Dad to work with Jimmy's music playing so so loud ...poor Dad. Still laugh about it now...
Proud Aussie here 🎉 and this is still an anthem, we can’t help but blast this song and sing at the top of our lungs! This, and Khe Sanh is another, not sure if you’ve done that one yet!

Aussie iconic song. You know when he took on this solo approach he was in the states and got approached at his home by Eddie Van Halen personally to join van Halen after Dave left. Jimmy politely turned him down. He was approached again when sammy left but the contact never quite happened. True story.
I was in Texas for a month in 2018 and can confirm that it is VERY similar to the Northern Territory and Queensland. Felt like driving through home (I’m from the NT). I stayed in Austin mostly and the people were so friendly.
Jimmy and his original band "Cold Chisel" are perhaps the kings of Aussie "pub rock" anthems. (Interesting you make the Springsteen connection as I feel Cold Chisel's "Khe Sahn" is the Aussie equivalent to "Born in the USA") The thing with these "anthems" is you don't sit down to learn them they are learnt by "osmosis". They are the background music at pubs and parties and still get just enough radio airplay to burrow in to the brain. My kids, 17 and 21, weren't even born when these songs came out and yet, somehow, know every word. Comedian Adam Hills has a very funny video where he sings our national anthem to the tune of "Working Class Man" and it lifts it immeasurably.
This track was a massive hit here in Oz and was the track in a movie 'Gung Ho', released in Australia and New Zealand as 'Working Class Man', starring Michael Keaton.
@@Texas_Love Midnight Oil has a lot of great songs. A video that I would first recommend is, 'Stand In Line,' filmed LIVE in 1985 in Sydney Harbour on Goat Island. Another legendary Aussie group (besides ACDC) is Midnight Oil. They had one hit in the US with Beds are Burning. However, please check out US Forces and Dead Heart
He is a legend and the Springsteen comparison is a good one. He was approached by Eddie VanHalen to join the band after Dave Lee Roth left but said it wasn’t for him at the time.
Bruz as a session muso myself, when we play this song 90% of the time, we can't even hear ourselves over the crowd cause their singing this so loud 🤘🏽🤘🏽
That song featured in an early 80s Michael Keaton movie. The movie was called Workng Class Man in australia and in the US it was called Gung-Ho I think.
You gotta watch a live version … he was a lead singer in cold chisel too if you haven’t seen them check it out, also John Farnham, Johnny Diesel, guy Sebastian and midnight oil and silver chair
From your first comment on your "When Something is Wrong with My Baby" reaction, I knew you were a Jimmy Barnes fan (you just didn't realise it yet). Welcome to the club. 😁
@@Texas_Love you'll really like Cold Chisel too. Suggest doing 'Wild Thing' from the Last Stand (early 80s) or Bow River (2003) - both are live versions and be prepared to be absolutely blown away. I think Bow River is the Ringside tour. Others will confirm. 😊
That was filmed at Port Kemlba Steelworks. In front of the BOS. Thats where my dad, brother and myself worked. No chance due to safety would they allow that now.
Love you discovering Cold Chisel and Jimmy Barnes. If you want to know if any Australians are around listen to Khe San by Cold Chisel - an unofficial anthem.

The piano part of this song was written by guy from Journey responsible for 'Don't Stop Believin''
Another legendary Aussie group (besides ACDC) is Midnight Oil. They had one hit in the US with Beds are Burning. However, please check out US Forces and Dead Heart
Please do Bow River by cold chisel the live version, it’s a great song. Cold Chisel Is Jimmy band all very talented band
He is a legend and the Springsteen comparison is a good one. He was approached by Eddie VanHalen to join the band after Dave Lee Roth left but said it wasn’t for him at the time.
You know you are the man if Van Halen calls you up! Awesome!
Bruz as a session muso myself, when we play this song 90% of the time, we can't even hear ourselves over the crowd cause their singing this so loud 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Nice!!!!!
That song featured in an early 80s Michael Keaton movie. The movie was called Workng Class Man in australia and in the US it was called Gung-Ho I think.
YEP 👍👍👍🤜🤛🥰
You gotta watch a live version … he was a lead singer in cold chisel too if you haven’t seen them check it out, also John Farnham, Johnny Diesel, guy Sebastian and midnight oil and silver chair
From your first comment on your "When Something is Wrong with My Baby" reaction, I knew you were a Jimmy Barnes fan (you just didn't realise it yet). Welcome to the club. 😁
Glad to be a member, thank you!
It was actually covered in the country charts in the US. Not a fan lol but there was a cover version by Lacy Jay Dalton
That was filmed at Port Kemlba Steelworks. In front of the BOS. Thats where my dad, brother and myself worked. No chance due to safety would they allow that now.
I bet you guys are proud, I would be!! That's awesome!
FYI …..The background fire in this video is the burning of sugar cane before harvest in far North Queensland. Still is done the same way today.
✌️☮️❤️🇦🇺🥂
Honey, Chisel were the voice of a generation.
Hi mate! This song was used as a soundtrack to a 1980s Michael Keaton flick called Gung-Ho
Love you discovering Cold Chisel and Jimmy Barnes. If you want to know if any Australians are around listen to Khe San by Cold Chisel - an unofficial anthem.
there was a movie called working class man with Michael Keaton in America it was called Gung Ho !!
It was also used as the theme song for the Michael Keaton movie of the same name
It was used as a theme song to movie "Working Class Man" with Michael Keaton . I think its at the end of the movie.
Just looked through the comments and no one has mentioned 'Flame Trees' or 'Saturday Night'. Please put them on your list. Thanks Texas
I live in the Northern Territory - where Crocodile Dundee was set, and look - it's not a stereotype.
From the ages 5-8 or so I remember me and my brother always saying "that's not a knife" all the time lol🤣 Crocodile Dundee was and still is the man! My aunt was always saying how good looking he was lol
A working class guy enjoying a song about the working class
👍👍😄
